In 25 years of building bows, this will be my first two-piece takedown with a socket and tenon system. The bow will be a 58" Hybrid with a Shedua and Katalox riser, bamboo cores, and stained veneers. I have some ideas for building an accurate jig to lay up the socket and tenon system so I don't have to use any pins for realignment. We'll see how it goes.

I got everything ready today for the glue up tomorrow. I used my last two pieces of glass so you'll be hearing from me soon Kenny.

Pulled the bow out of the form this afternoon and built a jig for the two-piece process. I ordered a 1" vertical belt sander from Grizzly that should be here tomorrow and I can start the takedown process.

The hardest part is getting into the mindset that will allow you to cut a perfectly good bow in two... 😳😁
Make sure that you use lots of mold release before you build up the grip.

I hear ya. I actually did a trial run on a junk bow last week and figured out what I did wrong and got some new ideas on how to do this one. It's like a lot of things with this hobby, I'm not doing it out of necessity, I just want to see if I can do it. Which in the end always proves to be an expensive answer.

All ready to build the socket.

JGR1269

Thanks buddy. Sometimes I think I enjoy building jigs as much as building bows.

JGR1269

I cut the excess off with the bandsaw and squared it back up like it's a one-piece again. Tomorrow I'll shape the grip and get it tillered before I try to get it apart.

It came apart nicely. Tiller and limbs were straight, so my jig worked

So you just wrapped many layers of fibreglass cloth around the splice to build up the grip?

Mark

JGR1269

That is correct. Instead of using fiberglass resin I used clear epoxy similar to Smooth-On but not as thick. I added dye to the first batch of resin for reference so I'll know when I get down close while I'm shaping the grip. I applied a couple coats of mold release to the tenon and it came apart slick as heck once I got the excess material off. When I strung it up the first time it popped and all the joints were broken free so I knew it would slide right apart. Couldn't have worked out any better.

Kirkll

That was a good idea coloring your base coats to tell ya when to stop. I've never done one of those wrapped style two pcs.... I just HATE cutting a perfectly good bow in half. :biglaugh:

It's turning out really well Kirk. I wouldn't hesitate to do another one.
