One of My Latest Knives

Sometimes I get orders that are based on knives from early American history. I recently finished one such knife. This one is a loose interpretation of the Musso Bowie. I have detailed drawings of the Musso, but tweaked it to suit my taste. It's a little too big for my taste, but scaled down to 9 or 10 inches and it would make a good hog knife.

   The blade is a little over 12 inches with the overall length 18 inches. The fitings are Mild steel, brass, and stainless. The wood is Black Walnut.
 

   Now for you guys who like to recycle.

The blade is from a truck spring forged down.

The guard is forged from a Railroad Spike.

The brass is from an old door kick plate I scrounged.

The wood is some Walnut I cut and dried myself.

Beautiful knife, Lin. I am amazed after reading your site that you've not built thousands of knives...it gives me a lot of hope that with the right training I might one day build a knife of that quality.

that's just what I was thinking Dan. It's nce to see our native wood looking good. I saw a tree at my hog place that has a huge burl on it..I don't remember what kind of tree..I suspect a white oak...but I'm going to investigate it to see whether it will work for anything or not.

Man is that a nice knife.  They were built for action back then and I would say your 'replica' is no exception.  Excellent work Lin.  Thankyou for posting it.  Nice job recycling also!

       I'm sure there are better knives for hogs. Maybe with a slimmer blade and push/pull features in the handle. I made this one a while back and, to me, it would be a good hog knife. The blade is 8 inches. The handle is Micarta.

 

      I actually intend to make me a knife some day, but will lean towards the practical side. On an average day I'm more likely to have to chop a tree limb than stick a hog. But it's nice to be prepared.

   Butts2, Yes some people are crazy enough to hunt hogs with a knife. To be honest though, the dogs help.
