Were there many opportunities for hogs on the first hunt?

We took Terry's javelina back to the skinning shed, and got it hanging and opened up to cool. With two javelinas to his credit, Terry was tagged out. We had some lunch and went back out so could get a crack at a second one. We spotted a lone javelina slowly working down a dirt road toward us. I handed the binoculars to Terry and headed toward the animal to a spot where I ducked into the brush to hide within a thicket of mesquite and prickly pear. I had a good pocket to stand in with cover behind and in front of me and a shooting lane that would work for a broadside shot. I could see the javelina coming into view through the thick tangle of mesquite branches in front of me. When it stepped into the shooting lane I took the shot. The javelina exploded into the brush to my right and ran a half circle that then became a straight line -- the escape route he took then went silent. After about 45 minutes we took up the trail. The trail showed an arrow broken into three pieces, but no blood. None at all. I stood where I shot and talked Terry through the brush to where I heard the last sound. That technique yielded a very dead sow javelina with the evidence of a perfect double lung shot. She had traveled less than 30 yards total. I was tagged out too.

Yes, there were opportunities.. most of them were not pursued... more on that later... my wife is fixing to sing.

Excellent shooting!  At what point will you get all of the cactus spines out? Way to go Joe!

smokin joe

The mesquite and prickly pears aren't too bad. I am still pulling the spines from the "pencil cactus" also known as cholla cactus. The pencil cactus spines are almost invisible. They go through several layers of clothing and even heavy leather gloves easily. They hurt like the dickens too. I'll be picking them out of my skin for another week at least.

Just now getting a chance to post, things have been hectic back home, but not as hectic as group 2 is gonna be in a few days though!! You guys are in for it. As you can already tell by the pics,we were in Javies every day, especially from 2 till dark and we probably didn't check out half the place. They are thick. Will be looking forward to yalls adventures! Turned some of theses guys into delicious Javi pepperoni snack sticks. They wont last long. Thanks Terry for putting this all together[attachment=1]

So yeah, the Arkansas boys ended up tagging out on day 3...... Their coolers were overflowing, and they decided to head back home to take care of the meat.  I was very tickled for them as they have been on this hunt now for the 3rd year.  They did leave us with a full Pan of fish. :jumper:

Ronnie had some situations at home, and he left 2 days early also.

I continued to pal around with Joe on day 4 to assist in any way to get his #2.... Then, the last day, I did the same with James while Joe packed and Taxidermied.

Therefore, there wasn't much hog pursuit.....

As Joe posted ..... I had his binos and was set up on a pond berm for observation with a dark maduro, and Joe was about 200 yards down a sendaro putting the sneak on some javies..... Then, he dove in the brush as they were headed his way....

I was keeping serious tabs on the action as they neared Joe's hide out.... sure enough, I saw Joe's lit arrow nock come screaming out of the land of spikes, needles, n thorns...

Being that it was overcast and the cloud canopy was low, his flo-green nock was most visible on its zip to the target... the javie wheeled and went in on Joe's side of the cactus jungle....

Great stuff witnessing that.   :campfire:

Great stories guys!  Yeah Wud, Snuffer would be a much better choice than a ribteck for sure!!!  I heard tell of a 3 hour bloodtrail, if so, bet someone was a pin cushion for sure!  :scared: :scared: :scared:
