Fred Anderson "Mojo" Recurve

I was at a trad shoot yesterday and shot with a man who was carrying a Fred Anderson recurve which was marked "Mojo".  It was a good looking 62" one-pc, 54#, with very narrow limbs and teeny, tiny limb tips.

After shooting it, I was very impressed with the way it behaved.  Anybody got one? Comments?

I have a  one piece, 64" Anderson "Phantom," Given to me by a very, very, good friend. The bow is 65#@29 1/2", purpleheart with black glass, lighter accents(pale like balsa and another fairly orange) through the handle. It has micarta tip overlays. The bow has laminated accents at the heel of the handle that are made up of the three woods mentioned above. The bow is gorgeous and a great little shooter.

This one has average sized limb tips. The limbs taper from just a shade over 1 1/2" to 1/2" just ahead of the string grooves. The limbs sweep back maybe five degrees as they leave the riser, not much at all compared to my other recurves. The recurves are of the same general curve as most of my other bows, maybe just a touch more of a hook.

I have three of Fred's bows, two are longbows, and I have been happy with all of them.

Does he have a website..Does he still make the skookum longbow?

Fred no longer makes bows commerically; at least the last time I talked with him he wasn't.

Fred never had a website.
He has a book, "The Traditional Way: the mystique and Heritage of Archery."
He made me a longbow(Hyak, over a year ago, that a friend admired. I gave him Fred's number 'cause he wanted one. He called Fred(last month); but Fred needs an operation(knee or hip) in order to be able to stand long enough to get back into bow building. I remember he(Fred) told me when he made mine that he was having trouble standing for long periods.

The MOJO is designed/described, by Fred, as a recurve hunter. It's 62" and 40-60#s. It has a low wrist, form fitting grip with a thumb rest. Pure 1950s-1960s style recurve, made by a true, old-line, master bowyer. $695 new but I guess they'll become collectors items now.

Fred is one of the best, if he was Japanese I,m sure they would consider him a living treasure. I really enjoyed his book also. I have spoken to him a few times, he seem like a real gentleman...Glenn...

Fred has only made about 20 mojo recurves & I have a mojo special which I truly enjoy shooting.

Even after knee replacements and foot problems, Fred made it to the 2008 Traditional Bowhunters of Washington rendezvous and shot all three courses with his Mojo recurve.  

We all tried twisting his arm to have him start making bows again, but Mr. Anderson is determined to stay retired.

     

Fred was also the guest speaker on Saturday as everyone enjoyed his stories of trad archery in years past.  Some of the stories will appear in his new book that we are all waiting for sometime next year.

I have way too many bows and several Anderson longbows...But a very dear friend of mine as just one longbow (Anderson Skookum).  He has shot a Grizzly, African game, and many deer with Just that Bow!  Moral to story...fear the guy with One Bow especially if it's one of Fred's    Doc
