Wood inventory

What you got in your stash? Going wood shopping tomorrow with Mike Treadway. Going to Jeffries Wood Works in Knoxville.

Been awhile since I went. Hoping to get enough walnut and maple for some furniture I want to make. Hopefully they got some Black limba as well. I want some end tables out of Black Limba.

Going to shop for the bow swap as well.

Current inventory:
Walnut, Curly Maple , Fiddle maple, Black Limba, Canary wood, Granadillo, Afromosia, Cherry, Goncalo Alvex, some gorgeous Bolivian rosewood, Bloodwood, Brazilian cherry, some real nice figured bubbinga, Zebra Wood,quarter sawn Sycamore,Wenge. Also got some bamboo from Big Jim's for the cores.

I think I like collecting nice lumber as much as anything!

Looking forward to doing some real nice combo for the bow swap.

He that Treadway boy prolly just be looking for some sasafrass or sycamore. And be letting some hillbilly grub off on you.

I got one of his "Back to Basics" D bow in Kingwood riser with Quarter Sawn Sycamore limbs. Absolutely gorgeous! It was the first bow I bought from him And what started my trad bow obsession.

He said one of the fastest bows he has made had Sassafras limbs. I have yet to run across any Sassafras. I have some mature Sassafras trees, but not ready to cut them.

Yes sir sasafrass edge grain makes really good core and smells good when you saw it. I would say as good as elm.

Sycamore has a beautiful grain also. I think Mike gets some of his wood, like sycamore and sassafras from around his house and property, at least he used to.

The Sycamore needs to be quartersawem or its pretty plain.

I was all set up to make a sassafras core bow (I know folks use it) and when joining the lams the CA wouldn't stick it together. Only wood I've used that couldn't be CA ed together.

So I scrapped that idea. Maybe it wasn't dried properly, I should check that, still have some of it...

Really? Since when did you start laying up limbs with CA bro?

Only splicing lams at center .

You'd need to be quick to lay up the whole limb...

You ever mix fresh EA 40 with CA bro? If not.... try it on a sample piece and watch what happens... Keep fire extinguisher handy...

These are fully cured CA splices before the EA40 gets warmed up!

I've used sassafras. I like it in a glass longbow. It's underrated. I use quartersawn inside and flat sawn visible under the glass. As far as looks, most couldn't tell it from red elm. The color is just a little different.

I have a lot of wood here, I've been gathering it faster than I make bows with it. I was curious so counted it up one day, I have enough wood to make well over 300 bows of various sorts... self, backed, glass, etc. Stocking up so I'm not bored if I'm fortunate enough to retire one day

Walnut (free), Bubinga, Bocote, Padauk, Bird eye maple, Honduras rose wood, curly Myrtle, Bloodwood, Canary wood, Cocobolo, East Indian Rosewood, Thuya burl, Lot's of Osage (free) 12 Osage staves, and a Partridge in a pear tree.

African Blackwood is my favorite, I used the last of what I bought years ago.

I tried it once years ago using a spot of superglue on a tip wedge to keep it from moving. The chemical reaction is rather dynamic.... Only did that once...

Dried CA is fine... fresh CA creates a serious amount of heat as it cures, an very quickly too.

We used a lot of West Systems epoxy building boats that was really hot stuff. If you left too much setting in a paper cup after mixing it, it would start smoking.

I've had CA smoke on a paper towel when I wiped up some. The stuff bowyer's use ain't good for you.

On the tip wedges, I've figured where the nocks would be on the lams and cut a little longer than needed and put a piece of tape folded over end of lam and wedge. Then unfold to apply glue and fold over and carry on. Worked great.

Speaking if CA...I used some gel CA to fill some grain in Wenge. Spread it with my finger.

I found if I misted it from a foot away with the accelerator, it would cure without turning white.

Decided to spray it on my CA coated finger....BIG MISTAKE! It literally burnt my finger pad. Was sore for 2 weeks.
