Well, there was a post about not giving up on staves and billets.. so being some one who hates to throw things out I was hooked... had some osage scraps...made some board billets.. tappered and glued and then discovered cracks.
fire wood?...
Plan is to back with cherry power lam..and hickory lam backing.. cherry and osage handle and overlays... save my wood?...

Shawn, are the cracks on the back or the side of the board?    If on the back your backing should take care of it. If it is on the side it might be firewood!    Pat

Pat, those cracks are on the side...and I only got 1 1/4" width and 59" length...   :scared:
However, I'm a thinking I might be able to plane it down to maybe 3/8" thick..to salvage...what you think?

The 1 1/4" and 59" is doable. I have made 60"t/t static recurves both backed and self. The cracks worry me. If you can plane it down below the cracks you might get a bow. You can always add a cherry lam in between if the belly comes out too thin.   Pat

I'd plane off as much of the crack as possibke then wrap the limb with raw hide or sinew

Pluck Yew

I'm a thinkin I will plane it down and see if I can get below the cracks... haven't made cherry lam yet so I betcha thats what I'll try...good thinkin guys thanks...to be contiued..  :campfire:

The cherry is strong but light enough for a good center lam and an osage belly works very well. I have 2 bows that I built last year; one a boo backed yew and the other a boo backed hickory. The boo/hick started taking on too much set and the boo/yew developed a bad fret so I ground down the bellies to about 1/8" and added an osage belly and retillered. Both bows came out better than the original...except "Trouble Maker" the boo/hick. First the spliced osage gave below the handle. I fixed that by re gluing...I thought! Then when the handle popped off I added 3 thin handle lams so they would give a bit and wrapped the handle in hemp cord and set that in Massey finish. Then the bottom of the riser lams began to lift so I added a rawhide wrap and when that didn't quite do the trick I added another wrap of silk thread set in super glue...hence the name Trouble Maker. She is an excellent little bow, 61"t/t, about 1" wide at the fades and a straight taper to 3/8" tips. She pulls 55#@26" and spits an arrow. After 2 years of shooting she still holds 1" of reflex after resting...and the handle is still sound.
By the way, both of these bows were glued with TBIII glue. The handle popping off was my fault for getting the limbs to bend right up to the bulbous handle.  Pat

I try never to quit but I do have a "corner of shame" that holds many dark secrets. Eventually I will get to each and see what I can make of it.
With this bow it got to be a challenge to see who would win.        Pat

Your options are endless, extra lams of any hard wood, bamboo backing, hickory backing etc. Don't give up on salvageable wood.

Pat B

...and to think, its all your fault Eric!     Pat

Of course I jest...and I am appreciative of everyones knowledge and advice...and when that bow is finished I guess I can't put all the blame on Mr. Krewson...   :notworthy:

Well, I did it again...

I hate it when that happens. You are still not defeated, you can add another limb.

Good as new!

Pluck Yew

Oh my god..I just happen to have material for that...  :scared:
