Sinew?

Saved the backstrap sinew from a deer. I've done this before but it went bad on me. How do you keep it from molding? I was thinking I would put it in an airtight container with some redcedar shavings. I got all the meat etc. off that I could and washed it with water only.

If your sure you have all the meat and fat off of the sinew, give it a wash in a solution of bleach water. (About 1 teaspoon bleach to a quart of water)

The bleach (Chlorine) kills nearly all bacteria.

After the washing, put it where it can fully dry and it will keep till you need it. Just don't leave it where a dog might find it. My two Chessie's LOVE sinew. . . . dry or not.

You could also keep it in a frost free refridgerator, and that will dry it out, too, but it takes a long time

I place sinew on top of my water heater. It dries in a couple of days, no mold.

You need to store in in a very dry place inside and not in a basement. My shop is very dry so I store all my sinew in a work bench drawer.

I know about the dog issue. I've had a few hides mulled or totally disappear because of my "trusty" canines.

Hot box i think is what your saying.  That would work to dry it out fast.  Like Eric said the top of your hot water heater is good place to dry it out thats where i do mine at.  Then i just leave it in an open container in my shop it needs to stay dry to avoid any mold.  Good luck.

I keep my dried sinew in a sealed ziploc bag and haven't had any mold or mildew problems.    Pat

Hears what I do.Make sure it's scraped clean.1,Spoon of bleach to gallon of water but I have did it with out it.Here's the key.After it's cleaned.Put them in a hot box and to dry 3,4 days.It molds because of moister this takes enough moister away that you can put it in zip lock gallon bags.Push all the air out you can,seal them put them up in a rafter they will dry the rest of the way.Or ifyou like leave them in the hot box to dry for quicker use.But anywhere warm will work.
