New bow in progress

Not mine!! A buddy talked me into buildin him one. He shoots a wheel bow now,but he's comin around... It'll be slow,but I'll try to post progress reports as we go. Shootin for a 64" hybrid,50-55# @28". He wants all MO woods,so Heres what we've got so far....

Osage/walnut/honey locust for the limb veneers.....

I won't cut the veneers til I get ready to glue,just some prep work for a day or three!

Got a bit more done on er,riser on right is the one I'm gonna use,didn't like the first one(on left). Sage,honeylocust,.050 walnut,sage. I'll show ya the reason only 1 walnut strip was used later,stay tuned!!

AARRRGH !!

Ya never know what hides in the woods!! I got 2 paralells off this before I found this.

Was gonna be an all MO woods bow,any ideas what would look good on the other side of er?? Was thinkin maybe red elm or curly hickory? Hmmmmm

Or should I back up and make a whole new set and have the swoops on back and belly?

Can't you just fill the crack with super glue, when the glass goes over everything, it shouldn't be a problem...shouid it?

You could make those the tip ends. If not in this bow, maybe another. How long is the material, you could hide'em under a back overlay, if its long enough.

Major bummer, somtime you can't tell with wood what's under the surface. I've had worse happen; like got it glued up, got the limbs profiled, got the weight right, cut in a shelf and sight window and found the grand canyon inside...

If the glue up glue will fill the voids I think these lams would make an interesting bow. Once the glass is put on they shouldn't matter(except cosmetically) should they? Pat

I don't think those would be a problem. I've seens some knarly looking voids, splits and spalted veneers. One awesome set of veneers had worm holes running through 'em. Adds character.

If you're still not sure, send 'em to me and I'll use 'em :D

I have had laminations like that before Kenny, you could fill them with super glue or epoxy and colour the epoxy black. I normally do feature laminations on the back and belly and I would use those on the bow tips and hopefully you would probably loose those voids and I reverse the feature laminations on the opposite sides...Glenn...

They come right in the edge of the limb and bein a kinda narrow limbed hybrid,I don't wanna take any chances.

I agree Kenny.
When you put the pressure to those they may(probably will) split worse. You may "get by" by trying to fill with glue, etc. But you may not, and then you will always have a bow that you need to make excuses for. "When in doubt, throw out"
You have too much time and money into the project to try to make one set of lams work. I've been ticked off too many times after pulling the tape off a bow to take chances anymore. My eye is always drawn to any flaw in a bow I make and it soon become a "step child" bow on my rack that eventually gets camo paint or something.
Everybody looks at it differently, just my 2 cents. Chad

Kenny, since you have alot of time invested in those lams, can you cut the bad section out, and add another swoop of Osage?

Yep Chad,I don't like excuses! My wife says I am a perph....perf....Ahhh I'm too picky!

Dave - I could have before I sawed them to .080,now it would be a lot harder to make em look like anything I think.

I think I'm gonna put flat grain red elm on the back and the 2 good fancy lams on the belly.

(After talkin to Dave earlier tonite and he told me what good camo red elm is)
