Just asking if any one has tryed making there own pins out of wood or micarta for their finished look in handles?  Just a thought as I was looking at this amazing work and thinking about the wood contrasts and lines.  Something to ponder I guess.

I've seen many knives with Micarta pins and carbon fiber ones, too. There are various supply places that sell them in the different sizes and they provide good strength and either a contrast to the handle material or blend in very nicely.

I've not seen many wood pins, but it would certainly be doable. I think one possible down side could be the different expansion/contraction rates of the differing woods. If the pins wanted to expand but the handle material didn't, there could be a problem that would arise. This obviously wouldn't always be the case, but it's one potential problem. If the woods were picked carefully, I think it could be a nice look, though.

If anything, I think you'd see less variation between the pins and handle material if both were made of wood....they should shrink or swell closer to the same amount....... considering a metal pin doesn't move at all when a wood handle does.
It may be a bit of a problem when it comes time to peen the wooden pins though   :knothead:    :D

Ha! Ya, I can imagine standing there with a hammer trying to dome over the wooden pins.... I think that'd be a great tutorial    ;)  .
