Here's Stringcutter (Tom) with a new toy -- an atlatl.  He figured out very quickly how to really fling those heavy darts, much to the dismay of some pine trees...

Beautiful follow-through!  Now if we can only find the dart...  But if it's with the others, it has deeply penetrated a pine about twelve feet off the ground.  Mammoths beware:  Tom is armed and dangerous!

Clint,

Ya ever shoot at Great Bridge Archery? I was sniffin' around in there the other day and the girl in the shop said there was some Trad folks that shot there on Monday nights.

Don't really know where the Trad types round here like to shoot. Oceana looks like a nice range, and I believe they let civies shoot there.

Do you know anything bout the Kingsboro Bowman's club in suffolk? I know they shoot at the Lone Star Lakes Park (think that's the name of it).
I've found some links to them on some trad sites, but don't know if they have many members that actually use tad gear or not.

I've been out of the archery loop for quite a while, only been able to hunt w/ my bangsticks since my shoulder injury.

Knife River, Thanks alot for my new toy..... Was playin with it again just alittle bit ago.   Figured out what was giving me so much speed. Think it was cause I have so much weight forward to begin with?  :D   It is one of the nicest gift I've ever gotten.
And Killy not to be out done gave me Primal Dreams ( the Video). It's way cool. Not alot of arrow slinging like Oct. Whitetail. But the  places and animals they videoed was great. Only watched it acouple times so far. My little girl really likes the music.    "[laffsmyl]"
All in All I think the hunt went pretty good. Though I missed 4 times. " Got a Honey Hole"
Think next year we're going to have to call it " The Va. No Squirrel, Squwerl Hunt"    "[laffsmyl]"    "[laffsmyl]"

Oops, sorry guys, just realized that I might have been jackin' this thread   :o

I don't want to stray too far off topic here.

Clint, you can email or PM me if you'd like.

Enjoyed the get together even if no squirrels were harmed, could be cause PETA is down the road and certainly don't want to hear from them.Maybe next year will be the charm.
Bob, enjoyed sharing the woods with you and Bobby, the young ones[and us older] folks had a blast shooting with the flu-flu's. Will have to make some of them soon.
Clint, hope you enjoyed the jerky, now explain to Killy why none was left. Have to make up a whole deer up next year with this ravenous crowd.
Woody, it was a pleasure to meet you and I really appreciate shooting you bows, neither of which I could ever afford but sure did enjoy the experience.Bet Joe went down like a rock come bedtime.
Larry, thanks for the breakfast!!
Take care and hope to see everyone again somewhere.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

Lemme see,you all ditched me at Tom's house, you played atlatl without me, and you brought fresh jerky and didn't save me a scrap.

I baked pies and swept out the clubhouse.

Is this a guy thing?
My deer camp doesn't go like that.  "[dntthnk]"

So, anyway, I grabbed a heavy ash shaft, like everybody said that I would need for complete penetration of the game animal, and my '68 K-Mag. The squirrels were very active between 10 and 11 AM, and Killdeer the Stealthy was in amongst 'em!

I don't know why, but my arrow seemed to move very slowly, like molasses going uphill in February. The squirrels kept jumping the string. I even got up once and adjusted the arrow as it flew, but it missed anyway.

Well, I guess it's time I put my 2 cents in. I don't post much, a friend told me once, if you don't have anything to say just keep your mouth shut. Yeah, was a good time had by all I think. To be able to put a face on a name I'd only seen as a screen name was a good deal. Glad to meet each and every one of ya'll, truly was my pleasure. Tom, next year, the ONLY thing I'm gonna vollenteer for is cookin breakfast. I likes to see people eat and get the day off to a good start. I'll be a bit more organized and will be able to put on a bigger feed bag. Not to say, I was the only one to bring a coffee pot, gees, I gotta have a cup a jo in the AM. I can't brew up Moutain Dew but I can do a mean pot of java. And, it looks like I was the big winner this year. Didn't see any skerrls but I brought pies home. Clint, the sweet tatter pie eats just fine and Ms. Killie, the peach is one of your better works. Might just have a pie rodeo next year and forget about the dang skerrls. The only thing I regret about the wknd. is we didn't get any group pics and not many others either. Oh well, till next year, the memory's will live on. Good shootin this year to ya'll. Shoot straight and shoot to kill. Was a pleasure to meet and share a dinner table with ya;ll.    Jerry

Killdeer

Jerry, the pleasure was mine. But I dunno about making pies next year...mebbe I'll just bring some Ho-Hos or summat.

I'll think on it.

Let them puppy's breath baby, WOW , glad I wasn't a sittin down wind Hey Hey.

Killy, your arrow's so big the point didn't even make it in the picture.  Must be a trick of perspective, but the one on your string seems a skosh longer than the ones in your quiver... Hmmmm...

Perhaps un poquito...

Haven't heard anybody (but me) say "skosh" in a long time!

Well, seein' as how a few of us are here, I have to tell about one of my favorite parts of the trip. I have a new hero. His name is Joe.

He showed me how to throw a dart.

The first thing you have to do is fit your fingers onto the atlatl right. You finagle it until it seems to set right in your hand, and leave a couple of fingers where they can grab the dart.

Then you fit the base of the dart onto the tip of the atlatl. He's gonna launch it at the pine cone on the straw bale back there.

See?

Picking up the stragglers. Those darts rock the bales pretty good!

So, seeing everybody having so much fun, I axed Joe just as nice as I could if he would let me use his atlatl once. Naive child, he said OK!

I squiggled my fingers up through and around, then figured a way to grip the dart. I played with foot position, tested the wind, drew a line in the sand and let her fly!

Thanks Joe! She flew real good, and I couldn't have done it without you!   :bigsmyl:
