Great job Curt!

We're just about out of time here and the birds are not responding well at all.

LOL chances are if ya switch to a selfbow, you'll get a whole lot more shooting in, and not have to do as much gutting and dragging. We call it catch and release bowhunting ha ha

Curt,

Wow! Way to make a great ending to a fabulous story.
You earned it. I can't think of a better way to end the turkey season than to try hard with several close calls and then to finally bag the best looking turkey in the bunch. Sounds like you couldn't have scripted it better than what happened.

Hat's off to you Curt,

...sorry again for a big delay, not intentional.

I just got in from a great hunt.Had hens within feet of the blind, but Trainwreck and Splittail stayed just out of range. He came all the way back to the vineyard from where I shot at him yesterday, about 2 mi. north!!

...yesterdays hunt.....roosted the birds the night before, knew I had a killer set up.Had about a mile and a half walk to get to the spot.Set up my blind and within minutes they started to gobble,5:01,first gobble.Birds were bangin' away in the trees,I knew Splitail and Prettyboy were there, also sounded like a few jakes. As it got lighter a hen appeared about 100yds away in the field, coming from the south. She passed by at about 50yds and headed down the hill.I can tell the gobblers are on the ground now,so I scratch out a few clucks and yelps. They come right back at me..hard!! Now the hen reappeares and comes right to the decoys and hangs around a little.I'm figuring,"this is perfect, the boys will have to walk right by me to get to her.I can tell know the the gobblers are going to appear at any second...then there he is,Splittail and a second later comes Prettyboy. Here's a view of the setup from where they were looking(hen deke close, jake behind her)......

...now the hen starts up toward the boys and they start down.At about 30yds she about faces and comes back down the hill. She is going to pass at about 12yds,but the boys are gonna at about 20yds. She goes by,here they come...not gonna get any closer..Splittail strutting by,at about 20...start to draw.............

Gotta cook pancackes...sorry............back soon

....As I start my draw,he goes out of strut, like he saw something(probably me)..I release only to see the arrow pass just under him!!!  They jump up,and start to cluck.I get another arrow on the string,no time to attach the tracker string, look back out,see an bird standing, nervous as hell, draw and shoot in less time than it takes to tell, and the arrows strikes, but a little low.Immediatley,he goes for the nearest patch of cover, couldn't fly,and couldn't run to well either................I'll be back

...he crashes into the nearest cover and heaps up right there.Splittail was trying to get him going.wouldn't leave him. After about 15 I can still see them, can't tell if he's still alive. Then he flops up the slight rise were splittail is,out of sight....dangit!!!!

I wait an hour, with splittail gobbling once in a while to let me know they're still there. It's been an hour,I need to get to work, time to go look.I go to the first spot where he hit the cover and find this....

..Splittail gobbles just over the hill, maybe 20yds away.I know he's right there somewhere, figuring he's dead(hoping anyway).I sneak around to the lower side, hear some loud putts and out goes a bird, running then flying fine.Figure it's splittail, but try to follow anyway just to make sure. But he's gone,so I go back to look for my bird.Go around the low side again(this patch is only 10-12yds wide),even look in with the Leica's,but see nothing. So now I'll follow the blood trail.I start in on that bloody spot again,go about 5yds,big commotion.....

Thanks T

....This is the patch of cover the birds ran to...

.....Up get prettyboy, goes off the little cliff...gets air under his wings somehow....struggles to get off the ground...but he makes it and off he flys!!! Not well, but he's out of sight in a heartbeat!!! I can't believe it,this can't be happening......
