what do you consider dangerous game, and what methods of hunting do you consider dangerous(i.e is having dogs chase a cougar up a tree put you in any real danger?) Just curious thanks  :)

i agree hunting bear 20ft in the air in a treestand while the bear gorges itself on bait is nothing compared to the animals you just listed

This.  And throw Polar Bear and Crocodile in there and that probably sums it up. If it can eat me or stomp me, then it's dangerous. I don't consider hogs dangerous.

calgarychef

Mountain goat and sheep are truly dangerous simply because of the terain they live in.  They won't stomp you but dang a drop off a cliff is always just around the corner.

bayhunter

then wouldn't whitetails be considered dangerous game to because there are more deaths each year from people falling out of there treestand

calgarychef

Good one bayhunter, you might be onto the next "dangerous game"

i hadnt considered that, i was manily thinking about straight about trad bowhunting but that probably would be dangerous  :)

Every movie I see of a wild hog it is attacking someone.  Every story I hear or read of a hog hunt someone gets charged.  If you are on the ground and only using trad gear and a 300# hog charges you, I think you will feel endangered.

I suppose the difference between true dangerous game and "other stuff" is dangerous game will attack you to kill rather than just maiming you a bit.  Grizzlie and polar bear are most likely in that category whereas hogs might not be.

Thats one of my favorite definitions of dangerous game

ozy clint

i would add scrub bulls to the list.
Thick fog slowly lifts
Jagged peaks and hairy beast
Food for soul and body.

Border black douglas recurve 70# and 58# HEX6 BB2 limbs

Here is my somewhat theoretical take.  Hunting dangerous game in the classic sense is shooting an animal that is dangerous, and then dealing with the consequences.  In archery, and in a lot of modern booked hunts, you only do the initial shooting, you don't stop the animal that may die right away, or press home an attack.  Barry Wensel, Paul Schaffer, have "seen the lion" so to speak, and settled maters with a bow.  I am not too sure what opportunities really exist to do that kind of hunting with a bow.  Hogs might be an example.  Not overly tough, but something one could reasonably feel good about trying to stop with a bow, and some fancy footwork.

I am not saying there is anything wrong about being in on shooting a lion, or buff or whatever you want.  But it is only dangerous game if you are the one sorting out the danger.  It would probably be plenty dangerous to take the first swing at an Heavyweight, then jump out of the ring and let a pro settle the rest, but I don't think that is boxing.
