If you go hunting with a guide it will almost certainly be over bait.  So you sit and wait for the bear then shoot it.  A bear that's taller than a 45 gallon drem is a good bear.  That's about all youneed to know.  If you're spot and stalking with a guide he'll get you in on the one to shoot.  There's some bear anatomy pics on this site so you'll know where to shoot.

have fun!

If you want to hunt black bear in a spot and stalk environment where you can see a ton of bears and have a serious shot at a monster.  Look up Jim Shockeys Hunting Adventures.  They hunt in BC on the West Coast and have some spectacular hunting.  Jim or one of his guides can definately put you in bow range of a big blackie.  Like 20 feet from them at times.  His trips are spendy but totally worth the cost.  In a weeks hunting I would expect to see 30 to 40 bears and have good shots at at least 5.

Skill is not born into anyone.  It is earned thru hard work and perseverance.

By all means, check the thread on the Bear Quest IV hunt in the Pow Wow section.  Tom Phillips sets up his camp SPECIFICALLY for traditional bow hunting, so baits/stands are set up for optimum shots.  Also, if you're a hands-on kind of guy, this is the perfect camp, as everyone pitches in with the baiting, tracking, skinning, bottle-washing, and general camp chores.  I've never heard of a hunter NOT having an opportunity in Tom's camp, and as you'll read, there are some outstanding bears in those woods.

Good Luck!

I just went up to Prince of Wales island 3 weeks ago to hunt Black Bears, and to tell you the truth it was really bad. we saw 9 bears in 8 days of hunting. We were driving across the whole island every day, sometimes from Thorne Bay to Leobucher Bay which is about 80-90 miles on dirt roads. We never had shots at bears and there wernt any bears on the beaches. The island has been hunted too much. Last year they killed right around 500 bears. So i dont recomend POW
