I have been drawn for a GA gator tag.  Any experience out there on how to set up a BW plx longbow with a reel?  I have the side inserts for quiver.  Thanks for any advice out there.

Ah, don't put a reel on a PlX. That's like wearing sneekers with a tuxedo. Get an inexpensive Bear. It already has an insert and will cost you about $200. Just my opinion and best of luck on your hunt.

I have an adapter - I think it is a great northern thing because it attaches with the two black rubber straps - bottle reel screws to it - works really good with longbows - we have been shooting a Silvertip longbow 70# ff with it - throws heavy big game composite muzzy arrows great - also we use a 70# dacron way old bighorn longbow - throws glass arrows very well. I would not hesitate to tap a bow and hot glue brass inserts - then you will get a solid attachment every time - then easy to remove. A gator ought to be worth that.

Well, I agree about mod'ing the plx, and am not inclined to do so.  However, she's already tapped with inserts, and is my go-to confidence bow, hence my desire to have her drawn when it counts.  It's an interesting perspective, too...cheaper bowfishing bow vs. bw...my inclination is that this is my hunting bow, and my goal is a 10ft gator, so I want to feel that plx in my hand when it counts.  I'm interested in finding that adapter if I need it and can maybe rig an ams reel on the plx without any mods.  It's fun to figure out a new technique, and I sure appreciate everyone's input.  I imagine it will be 5 or 6 years before I get the chance again in GA, so I need to be spot-on when it counts.

Hey Stumpknocker, I understand where you're coming from completely, I was just funning ya a little. If you are going after a big boy 10 footer and the memory that goes along with it, I agree you should do whatever it takes! Good luck on your rig setup and the hunt. Be safe and tell us about it when you get back.

Stump, are the quiver inserts for the Kwikee type bracket or are they located more toward the ends of the riser?  I've not hunted gators, but if you will be using an AMS Retriever type reel, it will screw right to the quiver/sight inserts up by the sight window.  you could also fabricate a bracket that would mount to your inserts and hold the reel.  Just make sure you can get your finger to the trigger.  The strap on bracket should work, too.

Have fun, man!  Gators should be a real rush.

Looks like I will indeed be using an AMS Retriever reel.  My plan is to rig something between the two quiver inserts like a Kwikee type adapter.  If it works, I'll patent the darn thing and sell it to pay for that out of state gator tag..

Are you using the slotted reel with attached bottle, I hope. Other wise a 10 ft gator may be dragging around your PLX

Great Northern Quivers makes a traditional gadget adapter. It straps on to the bow and you can screw a reel into it.Good luck.

AMS sells a bracket with rubber straps for trad bows so you can attach their reel.
