Every deer season for about the last 50 years my college buddy, Clyde Musick, and I have gotten together 2 or 3 times a year for a hunt.  As we are closer to our sunset than our sunrise we cherish these moments more and more. We've had some great hunts in the past, but I think this hunt may have topped the others.
The bucks were cruising and chasing just about from daylight til dark. The adrenaline rush exhausted us every day from all the encounters we had. We hunt together primarily in ground blinds, and we alternate who is the shooter.

And there was blood on the ground.

Clyde scored first with a nice mountain buck.

Clyde got his deer Saturday morning. I had some "almosts" the rest of Saturday. Sunday morning would be my last sit before I had to head back down to South Georgia.

Sunday mornings hunt was full of highs and lows. The bucks were cruising, but getting a shot at one was frustrating. I was afraid to take a walking shot, and had several times I was at half draw and had to let down.

Finally I had a buck coming in to a doe that had cruised by earlier.  I whispered to Clyde that I was going to kill that buck!

The buck circled the doe and acted like a cutting horse trying to hem her up.  He finally paused for a couple of seconds broadside and my arrow was on the way!

It was almost like everything was in slow motion as my arrow headed towards the sweet spot in the pocket behind his right front leg. As soon as the arrow hit I could tell he was hurt bad. I had one of Norman's string trackers hooked to my arrow, and the string flew out for about 3 seconds and stopped.  The buck only made it about 60 yards and bled out quickly.

We waited about an hour before we got out of the blind. Before we got out a doe came in and gave me another opportunity.

My bow is a Dan Toelke (Montana Bow Company) 3 piece takedown Lynx.  He doesn't make them anymore, but it has been my favorite now for about 15 years. 49 @ 27 and has a smooth power stroke.
