I have never shot carbon arrows much, but I got a smoking deal on some Easton carbon legacy 600s.  They should shoot well out of some 43# limbs I have coming for my Silvertip takedown.  I was messing around with them and it appears some cutoffs from 2115s would fit perfectly as impact collars.  I have never done this before.  How long would you make the collars and how would you connect them.

Dave, For what it's worth , i've shot seventy and sixty pound bows for years without collars and carbons.... I don't see a need for them on the weight you are shooting. I would suggest just go hunting and have fun. Collars are irrelevant at you spects. Post back your successes stories!!!

I don't use the collars, but I like a 2" footing over the point end of my carbons.

I just cut a couple 1/2 inch samples.  They only weigh 4 grains so I think I am going to put some on a couple stumping arrows and leave the rest alone.

I may see what I have to do a couple for my 52-55# bows on Beman MFX too.

If you're using them as footings, behind the point, and not collars, in front of the nocks, a footing long enough to encompass the inserts is a good idea.  They serve two purposes.  First to keep the shaft from mushrooming on hard hits, and second, to keep from bending the point/insert interface on similar hard impacts.  A short footing will accomplish the former, but it takes a longer footing to accomplish the latter. 

 

Agree with Orion on length of footing . I think it sure makes a tough arrow, too. Stumping or hunting , I like it .

I use 100 grain brass broadhead adapters on all carbons, so 1 - 1 1/2" flush with the point is good for stumping.  Epoxy them on.

IMO it depends on the carbon arrow your using.  CE Heritage is a tough shaft but no longer made.  I've changed to GT Traditionals and they are tough but not like the CE's.  I picked up some TopArchery collars that are about 3/8" long and weigh 5 grains.  They've helped.  Like Terry mentioned above, with your setup and tough carbons like I mentioned (and others) you probably don't need a collar.  I'm shooting 68lb with the collared arrows.
