What are your plans for the upcoming turkey season? Won't be long now and most deer seasons are over, time to think about Spring.

I just hunt around here, it opens the third Wednesday of April.Planning on using my Toelke whip with Bullheads or snuffers.

Over the last few years, I have developed a passion for chasing turkeys with a bow. The season starts here March 15th so the opener is just a little more than a month way. I've been shooting different combo's in an effort to get nail driver accuracy at about 7 yards. I rarely shoot further than that...and usually closer. The turkey I took last year was at a distance of three yards. This year I'll be shooting my 52 pound Black Widow and a gold tip arrow with the business end having a Simmons Landshark. I can get a quiver full of those loaded as they are just the right size for a GN quiver. The most important part of my gear is my Orde string tracker.

To answer your question...I'm just hunting here this year. I've travelled a few times out of state and didn't find it much better than my local hunts. The only change is I have had two properties in the past that had turkeys; but I sold one this year. I still have the best one left though...its not very big but it always has a couple of gobblers on it to chase.

My season starts in 3 from tomorrow in south Florida. I drew a quota permit for 5 days starting March 6th and will hunt some open public land that is close and limited to primitive weapons. I've hunted both and the draw area has more birds, the open area has some, but I haven't spent much time there and usually a little later in the season.

Here's my tom from opening morning in '22, didn't need to draw then, just started last year. I don't use a blin down there, between the water, heat and long hikes... plus there is a lot of cover with the palmettos. So, I use a leafy suit, the Kill Suit worked great.

Panther I called in back in 2019, wanted to see one but not that close.

I have a big project for my boat this spring, so after that I will have to wait until the NY season opens on May 1st. Plan to not use the blind this year, have found Easterns to be the toughest that way, especially with open woods. Got my limit of 2 with the blind last year.

For broadheads old school 150 grain Snuffers have worked great. I tried the smaller Bullheads a couple years ago and bounced one off a tom's head and he went back to strutting. That was after waiting a long time for his head to stop moving, had plenty of chances for a body shoot; killed one 4 days later with a Snuffer. Still thinking about trying the head loppers, though.

Bow this year will be a 43# @ 29" double carbon Omega Native, 58" length in nice. For calls I mostly use a diaphragm, the Hooks Executioner 2 has been deadly. Dave Smith Decoys hold their attention, important with no blind especially.

Will be heading out to Nebraska again this year. Planning to use my short Kodiak magnum from a blind. Ace broadheads, homemade wing bone call, diaphragm calls and an old 1958 Lynch box call.

My camp on MS River, maybe NE and back to Old Mexico.  Haven't been since 2000?  Homemade recurve with some Grizzly Stick Proto type Clovis forged heads. Several homemade calls including a Tube Call I have been developing last 2 years, Bill Lester trumpet call and my Wooden Hen scratch box and a mouth call or two I need to press. Of coarse my Pre Waldrop Seat I have jimmy rigged several times and my 1/2 strutter that I made to sway his tail. Call quiet and sit long!!
Aim down your arrow because thats where it's going.

Just an FYI, this is the second year NE has limited NR tags to 10,000, and they have already sold out. Glad I went back when the numbers were still good, turkey population has really dropped there.

Bwana2

Yes I was out there when the bird numbers were high. Has declined. Bought our tags the first week available.

NE 2014.....had one down and these 2 came by.

I'm looking forward to this season! Usually try to hunt PA, MD, WV and OH. Blessed Hunts & Safe Season!

This may be the year I try to get a turkey with my bow... seems tough. Impressed by all of you who do it successfully. It has to be a real challenge.

PrimitivePete

My favorite time of year and I'm waiting to hear my lottery results and when I can start making reservations. I'm going to use a Black Hunter recurve 50@28, Gold Tip 500 Kinetic shafts with Magnus Stinger Buzzcut broadheads.

joebuck

Well I pressed more than 2 calls.  :goldtooth:
Swapping calls to my local buddies for crappie jigs

I typically hunt Nj til NY opens than stay there. I'm no fan of anything NJ does. Occasionally I hunt Pa. This year after the NY opener I'm headed to at least one northern state with the hopes to hit 2 and maybe 3. Already booked a cabin

10 days to go until the south FL opener... and it will be a wet one, water had been high to begin with and they just had a big rain of about 3". Luckily, I've hunted this WMA before and know where the high ground is.

It's still not as high as my first year down there, 2016. In fact, I won a Special Opportunity draw hunt at one of the best WMAs; got really lucky, or so I thought, think I only bought 5 chances @ $5 each. Anyway, I get down there and wanted to scout ahead the week before. I'm at the area walking around, just saw some hens and get a phone call: FWC calling to tell me that the hunt has been cancelled due to high water. Had never happened before and there was nothing I could do except find some open public land, and I still hunt there with plenty of others. Got lucky and met a local guy that showed me around and where to access. Looking forward to getting back there.

Dry year picture here, probably a foot of water there now...

joebuck

My decade of hunting next to Fish Eating Creek Fl on private land taught me finally to hunt that ground that is 1'underwater if birds roosted nearby. Birds just seemed majority of time to fly down in that shallow water instead of perceived dry ground and start the day with wet feet.  We finally ditched the dry ground and got in there with them for morning hunts

Possum Head

I'm not skilled enough to kill turkeys so I'll use the lawful opportunity to be in the bush with broadheads to pursue pigs
