Is anyone using something other than a drum sander to make laminations. Like a 6x48 flat belt sander or an edge sander. Thanks and if you have photos please post them.

If your on FB lookup Flatline bows.  I think he does it all with a belt sander.

Think I've seen reference to using a plane.

You still need sleds to make tapers

In Dan Bertalans book Traditional Bowyers of America there are two bowyers showing how they make lams without a drumsander.

Yes I started with a old craftsman 6x48 turned on it's side. Squared up the flat drum. Worked good for you years. JF

I attached a squared up flat table and a adjustable fence, pivoting on one end. I can do parallels,taper with a sled and shape belly rambs and limb profile. JF

I set up a jig years ago that i milled tapers through the end of my edge sander using 1.75" wide sleds.

But..... The continuous feed rate is critical to get accurate lams.

I highly recommend getting a drum sander if you plan on getting serious about milling your own lams.    Kirk

A few passes with out going deeper is how I use mine.
Could be the rubber drum KIRK, MAYBE, mine is aluminum.

I highly recommend the 1/4 HP motor 1725 RPM, mine was a old fan motor.

This is mine, It takes a little practice time to figure it out.
I have milled boo flooring down to .018, I push and pull at the same time.
I have a Grizzly baby drum sander too, but I like the hog for accuracy

Good results with the Baby Drum you need to take the H& L off reset the pressure rollers. Use spray adhesive on the paper and strap tape each end.

I did all that years ago stic   

I use mine for final dimension on lams. Have taken carbon twill down to 0.015" It is very accurate. Thanks Max.

When I make a parallel or taper on my Baby drum sander, then run it threw the hog, It finds high and low spots.
Is it the same for you??

This lamgrinder was used by Brandon  Stahl and he found it so accurate he never bothered to mess with it.

I can see how that setup would be very accurate if there was a constant feed. Not so much feeding by hand.

Max - yes that is the case. It gets out the undulations the other drum sander creates. I think it is misnamed as the Hog tho. As it is so accurate. I use the other drum sander to hog off material.
