Big Ed

This is a buck I havested the third week of October. Shot with a Black Widow PSAX 62" 55@30" with 640 grain Beman MFX 400 with a 145 Journeyman head with a steel adapter. I had a couple of entcounters with this buck over the last couple year. Last  year he was quite a bit wider with a much heavier body. I had not seen him since January of last year.  I had no Trail pics of him and thought maybe he left the area or had passed on. The beginning of October started a little slow for buck sign and sightings due to the heavy mast crop. They seemed to be a bit more spread out.  The second week of October I was hunting a stand that I have had a ton of luck in the past and felt very confident. As the evening wore on I thought maybe the night would be a blank. Getting closer to the end of shooting light I heard the faint twig snap from behind me. Slowly I rose to my feet and turned to see this old fellow skirting the thicket behind me. At first I did not realize it was the Big Six due to his stature. But as soon as I saw the big Y's I recognized the deer. As he approached my position he walked at a snails pace taking a few steps, then stopping to check things out. Then as he neared my shooting lane I put pressure on the string and at about mid draw due to being turned around in the stand my string caught on the bark of the tree.He came to full alert and peered straight through me. As he started his first attempt at a head bob I slowly let down to free my string,In one fluid moment I came to full draw picked a hair and shot. The shot looked decent but he seemed to duck a bit. I waited a half hour to get down and made the descion to back out until morning.
A rough night sleeped followed. I was up before light and at the spot from the night before with great anticipation. The trail was short and sweet. The foxes must have found him first, the hind quarters were pretty tattered.
While butchering him we discovered that he had injured his shoulder that caused his limp. He had a mass about the size of a softball on his shoulder. I believe whole heartedly that this was the reason for him loosing the weight. We aged him at 6.5 yeras old. I have never seen a skull plate as thick as his.
I apologize for the rambling, wish you all the best of luck, Big Ed

Great deer Ed. I passed on a big 6 pointer like yours about 5 or 6 years ago and have regretted it ever since. You don't see too many of them. Great trophy for sure. Congrats brother.
