Michigan bill would allow younger children to hunt

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Children under 10 would be allowed to hunt as long as they're with an adult mentor through legislation that has passed the Michigan House.

The measure adopted Tuesday by an 85-23 vote next goes to the Senate, which has passed similar legislation.

Current law requires a child to be at least 10 to get a hunting license. The age requirement is 12 if it involves hunting deer with a firearm.

The House bill would eliminate those provisions and set up a mentoring program that would allow children to get licenses earlier.

A mentor would have to be at least 21 with a valid hunting license and previous experience.

A hunter under 10 could get a license but would have to meet requirements that would be outlined by a state commission.

I am hoping that this goes thru for sure. I can wait until my kids reach the current age restrictions but if I don't have to, that would be awesome!!! Thanks for the heads up MOJO.

Believe it or not the "HARDWAY" is often the EASIER way(in hindsight)!

We sure have had a great safety record with the age requirements that are in place.
