FYI - there will be a vote tomorrow by the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee on A1669 which provides for bowhunting on Sundays in NJ.  I called the offices of the three committee members a little while ago and votes are split pretty evenly.  More details, including contact information for the committee members can be found at the link below.

If you bowhunt in NJ and want to do it on Sundays, call the committee members and voice your support for A1669.

For those that care, this legislation was passed unanimously by the committee and will be voted on by the full Assembly Monday, March 16, 2009.  Also, A595, which changes the safety perimeter from 150 to 50 yards, will be voted on in the same session.

The vote is Monday so that leaves only Friday (it's 5:15pm now and offices are closed) to make calls or send emails.

That is great, I can't believe as I talk to my Bud Bentpole all the time, that you folks don't get to hunt Sundays.  With woking all week, it makes absolutely no sense to me being from  Minnesota...

I don't know if you'd get more response putting this up on Pow Wow or not..??

Good for you guys, I hope this passees with flying colors.

I don't want to bend any rules here and my assumption is that if there's a forum for political action that's where I should post.

However, if a mod said it was ok, I would do it.

I never understood why there was no hunting on Sunday, either.  I just always accepted it.  But it would be great if we could.  People work so hard and long these days that some can only get out on weekends.

Great news David! I have been waiting for this since 1968! If it passes will it take effect for the 2009 Fall Bow Season?

Thanks

Just an update.  Sunday bowhunting has now passed both houses and is headed for the governor's desk.

Also, A595, which changes the safety zone perimeter from 150 to 50 yards, also passed thru the Assembly.

More details on both can be found at  http://www.njsportsman.com.

As for taking effect in the Fall 2009 season, I can't say.  The Gov has 45 days to sign or veto.  If he signs I would assume so.  If he vetoes then it goes back to the legislature to be voted on again.  If they pass it by a 2/3 majority in each house it becomes law.  Problem is, it might take months to be voted on again.

Laws passed can have dates in them or, if they don't, they go into effect on July 4th, following passage.

So... it's up int the air right now but it looks good.

That's awesome news.  I'll keep my fingers crossed.  Maybe some letters to the Gov. might be in order.

Patrick,

Yes, calls and emails and faxes are needed now.  The link in my previous post has all the info.  Uncross those fingers and type or dial.  :)

I sent an e-mail to Governor Corzine asking him to sign the Bill into Law.  I mentioned exposing children to hunting with a family member, and the reduction of herd numbers will result in fewer deer/vehicle collisions, of which there are over 60,000 a year in NJ!!!  Good Luck, NYB has put the word to flood his office.

Thanks, Al.  My gut tells me he will sign it.  No one likes to lose, and with the overwhelming support from both the Senate and Assembly, a veto by Corzine stands a very good chance of being overturned.

A quick update.  PETA, HSUS, Sierra and others are slamming the Governor's office opposing Sunday Bowhunting.  They are gathering forces from all across the country trying to sway the vote.

If you haven't already called, emailed, faxed or written please do so now.  If you have, do it again.

The opposition is doing their part.  We need to do ours.
