Went up to John's place this evening, lots sign but the deer have eluded me so far this year. There is one place I call the "old bucket road" I bushhogged it this year to make it accessible. I saw two bucks in this area last year so I decided to give the place a try.

About 100 yds after I left the field and entered the woods (ten year cutover) I couldn't decide where to climb as trees big enough to climb are few and far between up there.

While I was standing in the road trying to decide where to hunt a small chinapin oak tree sent a shower of acorns to the ground in front of me. This must be the place I thought and climbed just off the road in a clump of elm, maple and hickory trees.

About 1 minute before dark I hear a deer walking down the bushhoged road in my direction. He cleared the brush and offered me a clear shot at about 15 yards. I shot him walking, he kicked and ran off down the road toward the field. Because I use natural turkey feathers I couldn't tell where I hit him.

I took my time getting down, walked over to look at my arrow, not there, I didn't get a pass through. I found a good bubbly blood trail that went about 30 yards down the road and stopped abruptly.

I decided to take my stand back to my trunk and come back to sort out any blood trail I might have missed. I already had about 30 minutes on my hands and knees, when the blood trail stopped it stopped completely.

As I walked down the hill where I bushogged I saw one tiny spot of blood about 50 yards from the field. I shined my light down the road and saw what looked like a log in the road. Didn't remember any logs in the road. The log turned into a fat six point when I got a little closer. What a relief! He went about 75 yards.

I made a perfect double lung hit, he broke the arrow when he fell. Killed him with my copperhead backed osage bow, a chundo arrow and Zwicky delta broadhead.

Great Job, Eric!  Nothing like walking in, setting up and making meat.

Eric, congratulations on the nice deer.         :clapper:    :clapper:    :clapper:
It appears your bows of yours are as deadly as they are good looking.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

Congrats on that fine buck, Eric!  I know the feeling well, taking game with gear you made.  Even though you've built many fine bows for others too, it's always nice to take one for yourself out to woods and "validate" it's creation!
