A couple more interesting things about this hunt are that I had several pictures of this buck on my game cameras from this summer and fall.

If you notice the numb-type sticker point coming off his left base in the summer picture, it shows up again as an odd shaped hook on the pedicle of his antler.  Reminds me of the finger like roots coming out of a corn stalk.  Pretty neat!

My brother saw a good buck last weekend out of a stand that is very close to the one where I killed this buck.  I'm guessing it was the same buck and he was hanging out in this area.

I need to thank a couple of guys that helped make this hunt happen.  My father in law Gary Norris rents this ground for extra hay with the added bonus that we get to hunt as well.  I try to help him with the hay as much as I can because I sure enjoy hunting out there.    Thanks Gary.

Tom Porter "Gatekeeper" also helped me find this buck.  I had backed off from the blood trail after it went too far in my opinion.  The blood was steady but not really plentiful and he had covered a lot of ground from the point of impact. He jumped across a ditch and I didn't feel good about the fact that he had been able to do that, so I called Tom and backed out.  We met up and then worked up the doe before setting back out on the blood trail.  He agreed that a little extra time wasn't going to hurt anything.  We found the buck 30 yards from the ditch where I had backed off the trail.  It was great to have someone to celebrate with when we found him.

It was a fun day and I sure did appreciate the help of both guys when it came time to butcher up the meat.  Now I'm off to the taxidermist and trying to track down someone to make me some deer sticks.

Thanks for all the replies.

P.S. the bow I shoot is a Zipper Extreme (Norb got me started with them), I was using a beman shaft with a Stos head on the buck and a Magnus I 4 blade on the doe.  The total arrow weight is around 670 grains.  I have followed the single bevel vs multiblade debates this summer, but I admittedly have a split personality when it comes to broadheads.  Both performed well yesterday but I'm planning on doing more research as the fall continues.    ;)

It doesn't matter how or what you shoot, as long as you hit your target.

Those are the mornings that dreams are made of...congratulations on two great deer!

Hey Chris,
It's always nice to help someone get started on a thing as great as bowhunting.  I got my start from Lamb and I can only begin to count the times that I just walked into the woods with my bow and could have cared less about killing anything.  There is just a nice feeling inside knowing that I could if I wanted to or needed to.

Look at the great guys you have met already because of the bow and arrow.
I started with a great friend and I pass it to you so you can pass it to your two sons.  Your adventures are only begining.

By the way,  Nice Buck !  Gary  >>>---->

Chris,

I am glad I could be there to help. I too had a great time.

I would like to add to Chris's story by saying this was the fattest deer I have ever seen! There were places on this buck that had a layer of fat that was 1/2" or more thick. It was incredible. The doe was also in great shape she too had a reserve of fat on her but it was nothing like the chunky buck. It was obvious that the buck had a lot of lying around time.

Great job Chris!

Now we need to do another Platte Falls bunney hunt around Christmas or so eh?

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

Way to go Chris. This one slipped by me while I was out of town and out of touch. You did good and took a fine matched set.

Tell us where you hit the buck, and what goodies your arrow hit.

Can you believe?? That is "double trouble" no way around it. Congratulations on a great morning and good friends to share it with.
