The power of the pen!  Thanks for spending the time to put in ink your refections and exploits with Paul Schafer.  Doing so gives all of us that did not know him, a better understanding of what he was really like.

Target archery is seeing how far away you can get and still hit the bull's eye. Bowhunting is seeing how close you can get and never miss your mark.

Gene,

It is a real honor to have you write this about Schafer. I spend many hours in the field each season with one of my Silvertips, wishing I had met the man just once.  He will forever be a legend among men and mountains.  Thanks Gene, we have all enjoyed your commentary and excellent observations of a man we lost all too soon!

Gene,

Thank you for sharing.  Most modern folk have had their "sitting around the hearth fire telling adventure stories" taken away by the boob tube. You did a good thing.

Thank you Gene! I sure would like to read more! This fascinating life that Mr. Schafer led sparks the imagination and reminds us that the true spirit of bowhunting is alive and well. His values reverberate in the hearts of many, and inspire us to do our utmost to live the hunt to the fullest.

So thank you, Mr. Wensel, for the shot in the arm that I needed. Most would say that a kick in the pants would have been more appropriate, but I enjoyed this more.

Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.
