Dale....Thanks.... Us grey beards have to stick together....LOL.... BTW... I'm still wishing I'd have had the $ to do some bidding on that carving you put up in the St Judes Auction....That was fantastic....      :scared:   Terry

Well Terry, I gotta ask, what the heck is "Valdes Patina"

I thought you'd never ask Dano....   :bigsmyl:

The Valdes Patina is a home brewed dye named after the famous Juan Valdes.....Here's how I did it:

First you make up a hair curling batch of cowboy coffee:

Boil for 20 minutes:

Filter out the grounds:

Then allow to cool..... Once it's cooled down I soaked the rawhide strips over night to produce the color you see in the pics.....I like the way it turned out...... Terry

Me? Figured it out? No way.

I was just leaving some mystery to this process.    ;)

Kinda cool though how ya did that!

I didn't know for sure...was just guessing it was coffee.  I have seen my Mom do something similar with tea or pecan hulls for some of her quilting projects.

I had a small elk fix a couple of weeks ago too.  Darleen and I drove up to Big Lake.  We saw 4 Antelope, 14 deer  and 25-30 elk on the way up.   Right after sunset a bull let loose a little bugle from about 200 yards away from the lake.  It was music to my soul!      We came home about 2:00 AM.  As we came through Christopher Creek a big bull was standing in the right hand lane as we came around the corner.  Fortunately the road is divided there and we were in the left lane, cause he didn't budge.  He sure looked big.

I'm excited for you for your Colorado hunt.  You will have a blast I'm sure.

I got a little "auction item" in the mail Friday.  Waiting for the rest to come this next week.  What a beauty of a bow.  Maybe I'll be able to bring her by sometime this summer.

Hi I'm Terry and I quilt.....    "[tunglaff]"   I'll have to give Tea and the Pecan hulls a try.... cool tip.... Definitely give me a holler if you're down in the Valley.... Terry

Terry your a crackup!

The darkest I've seen was from black walnut husks/hulls.  Anyway, at least it's natural.

You're welcome Leo..... Bobby..... I'm starting to get into the natural dyes.... I have some red rock from a trip up north I'll be putting to use somewhere down the road and know I can come up with acorns this fall.... I wonder how they would do??....Well...... I'm heading out to catch a plane to Tecate' Mexico and will be working there the rest of the week..... I'll unwrap Compadre when I get back and then this project will be as exciting as watching sinew dry.....It takes longer than paint....   :D  Hasta Luego.... Terry

And here's the pics with the wraps off:

When the sinew is cured for a couple of months I'll take the bow off the reflex caul..... Trim the rawhide edges and check tiller..... It usually only takes some minor tiller adjustments at this stage..... Once that's done I'll do a bit of fussin to dress it up a bit ..... add a finish and get her sent to Mickey...... Terry

That is so awesome looking Terry.

Looks like a real live hunting bow to me.

Glad ya like it bud..... I think it's safe to say I'll be using the Valdes Patina again.... The pics don't show it but it is actually a bit translucent in spots and you can see the sinew underneath.... Terry

I love these "how to" theads, and this one is one of the best! May be hot, but that is one cool looking bow!

Thanks AZstickman for taking the time to share.

Thanks Al..... I figure if I can show just one guy something new in one of these threads it's worth the time and effort in taking and posting the pics..... Terry

superkodiak

you've definitely helped me with my sinew job on the current bow i am doing... only problem is that I don't have the heat or low humidity in PA to dry it out as fast.
