Picked up my first old bear - 69 Kodiak Hunter.  No holes, cracks.  Limbs are straigh, very good condition.

1969 was the year I graduated from High School.  I though that would be a good year for my first old Bear.  I will put a new string and rest on it, and shoot it next week.

Looks very much like the one Jon Voight uses in Deliverance - now look for a green magnesium B riser and you will have Burt's.

I like the early Kodiak Hunters.  I loose interest when the added a stripe, and especially when they turned green.  May be good shooters, just do't meet my fancy

The '68 and '69 are my favorites.

I bought a brand new, in the box, Kodiak Hunter for about $50.

I found it at a sporting goods store in Great Falls, MT...

I thought Mr. Voight made a great shot with that KH in Deliverance.  Maybe poor penetration, but the neck hit is deadly.

It was not the shot, it was the over-dramatic shaking of the bow by Jon. Katherine Hepburn had a steadier hand when she was 90. I think that it was supposed to show how hard it was to hold a recurve, but this was the same recurve that was strung with one hand like it had a 10# draw. And judging by the penetration, if the guy had worn a bow tie the arrow would have bounced off.

I just read that during the making of the film, James Dickey was visiting Fred Bear, saw a prototype compound bow, and went gaga. He told Fred that he wanted one for himself, his wife, and his kids. Watch Dickey shoot in the extended DVD and you see why he was ready for the newest fad.

Ol' Burt, on the other hand, looked like he could really handle a bow.

(Lon - Cochise in the closet? Let's just say that Jeff was looking for one of Ed Wood's cashmere sweaters - not there is anything wrong with that.

And Jon was supposed to have "buck ague," not advanced Parkinson's.
But the movie was great, and definitely sold me on Bear recurves and Grumman canoes)

Irish, that is one beautiful bow. I have never seen wood like that in a production bow. Just amazing.

I love it that you wanted a 69' for your first Bear to collect. And, that you wanted one since it was the year you graduated high school. I too have a 69' Super K for a similar reason, it was the year I was born......

I have one that's 53#, but it has black overlays and tips, and the glass is a darker charcoal gray/green tint.  I may take it to the Tannehill shoot in Alabama for the August gathering and see if I can find something I like better.  It is a great shooter, though.
