I had my first fish taco in San Diego (NAVY). They were so damn good, I ate 10! Out there they mainly use ocean fish like white fish, lobster, mahi mahi etc etc..

After about two months living back in Wisconsin, I made some with perch. Their great!!

IMO the key is raw cabbage instead of lettuce.
If I use cheese, it's goat cheese.

Fried or soft corn tortillas with tomatoes, raw cabbage, tartar, and hot sauce.

I use any fish now ( - trout, and salmon) Fried w/ or w/o breading.  Try cod or shrimp!!

TRY IT!!!!!!!!          OK back to archery!  :p

TexMex

There is a place in Fort Worth (The Rock Fish) that use flour tortillas and serve as a warp.
I agree the cabbabe is key.

Go bowfishing!  :D

Bowspirit

Absolutely spectacular...

Just used this recipe on some bullhead catfish I got yesterday. Probably going to be the only way I eat fish for a some time. And I'll agree to what everyone else is saying here...cabbage is the ticket...

But for those lucky enough to be bowfishing gar or other palatable rough fish, this is the recipe to remember...

Instead or the tarter and hot sauce try this out.

1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 lime juiced
1 jalapeno minced
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon dill weed
1 teaspoon cayenne

Mix it all up

I love fish tacos and this makes them so much better. Try it youll love it.

I may have missed it somewhere, but what is the recipe?  I see the one for the sauce but how do you prepare the fish?

It just seems to be fried, according to Bright Arrow. I fried mine in nothing more than a bit of butter, salt, and pepper. Good stuff...

Fry the fish or I like it grilled with some favorite seasonings on it.

The fish can be coated and fried, fried in butter, or grilled.  It goes into a corn tortilla, with shredded fresh cabbage, and usually a white sauce.  Options are cilantro, fresh salsa, crumbled fresh cheese.  The beauty is in its' simplicity, too much and lose what is great about it.  Soft corn tortilla, hot freah fish, crisp cabbage, and cool sauce.

I like to blacken talapia for fish tacos. Chef Pauls Blackened Redfish Magic, is the way to go.

I love fish tacos...I have used fried flounder, grilled as well as blackened striper and cobia, walleye, and rainbow trout.  I like to put spanish rice or cajun dirty rice, then the fish and top that with cheese and hot sauce.  Thats the quick and easy recipe.  This works pretty well when you have a limited cooking area such as a camp or on a boat.
Another tasty (and slightly healthier) way to do it is put the fish on a bed of cabbage, lettuce or baby spinach then add cheese and black beans.  Its one of my favorite ways to eat fish.  I always keep plenty of the soft taco sized tortillas around the house.

Being from San Diego where they originated, there is only ONE proper way to make a Baja Fish Taco!

Corona or Modelo beer batter.
Cod
Cabbage
Hot "tartar" sauce
Soft Corn Tortillas
and you must....MUST squeeze a lime wedge on top. This is non negotiable!!

I really want some now. =0(

Had my first fish taco in San Diego, they are great, Have not made my own yet but will try Gizzard's sauce.

Lucas K

The first time I had them was in San Felepe a little fishing village in Baja. Now anytime I get the chance I eat fish this way. I haven't tried it with gar but I may this spring. Oh and the cabbage is key.

Coat bite sized fish chunks in egg, roll them in seasoned mashed potato buds (the finer the better)and fry.

Everyone's got a little different way, most are pretty dang good

Born and raised eating them.

Mucho Gusto!
