anyone change from split to three under?i was shooting instinctive and was not very consistent i just tried gap with three under today i think im in love anyone else have this experience?

Yes, it's worked quite well for me! Expect tuning snaffoos/frustrations though ...sigh

Kyle, the further down the string you go, either three under or fixed crawl, you usually need a higher nock point and may also show a slightly stiffer dynamic spine. If your form is solid gap or fixed crawl can be deadly accurate.

well the tuning would be different so you would have to start over if that what you mean, i was getting good flight with my nock set at 5/8 i didnt have to change it thats what i shot split

How loud is it? That is what I have noticed with three under. It seems that everybody I've been around that shot 3 under their bows seemed louder to me. Without accurate sound testing devices to accurately measure it, I realize that my impression is only subjective. I tried it for a while and it didn't work for me for various reasons. I know others who are very deadly that are 3 under shooters. I'm just a split guy

The more posts I read and the more people I talk with on the subject of 3 under vs. split, the more this seems similar to buying a pair of boots.  I've noticed the same thing about the dead release vs. the dynamic release.

The most important thing about buying a pair of boots is the fit.  If a pair of boots doesn't fit well, it doesn't matter how many other wonderful features it may have, it's not going to work for you.  I think it's the same with string grip and release style: it has to fit you, and the only way you're going to know is to try it.  And if it's not obvious the first time you try it, you may have to go back and forth for a while until one or the other feels better.

I wouldn't worry to much about what other people have to say about string grip.  What matters is how it fits YOU.

I swapped a while back to 3 under and doubt I will ever go back. As far as the increase in noise level, that is certainly true. However, I think it is just more noticeable to the shooter since you are closer.

I have made mention that my bow is loud when shooting with other folks and they have said it did not seem loud to them. Also, I think tillering the bow even at least will reduce noise to some extent.

I switched from split. It was a hard transition but worth it; I'm much more successful in the woods being able to just point the arrow.

I'd shot split since I was little and three under felt very uncomfortable. I had all the "normal" problems: smacking my nose, buzzing my finger tip, and a louder bow. Took me about three months to get comfortable with it, but when I did all of those problems went away.

I have always shot three since switching to traditional some twenty odd years ago.  I never really had a problem tuning, but as stated above, my nock had to be a little higher.  When I bought my first longbow a few years ago, I was trying to shoot that the same way, and it wasn't working for me.  It was loud and I couldn't get consistent arrow flight.  I started shooting it split and it was night and day different, the bow was a lot quieter and my arrow flight was way better.  As McDave said above everyone is different and what works for one may not work for another.  I still shoot three under on my recurves, but shoot split with my longbows,  It take a few practice shots to get dialed in because of the difference in my finger placement on the string.
