I was thinking of trying an elevated rest and having my new Silvertip bow tillered for it (I have the option of the bow coming with either shelf material or an elevated rest) and shooting vanes. I use the tip of my arrow to aim, so having the arrow close to my hand should not be an issue. Would the rest be an advantage for accuracy? What other advantages would I see?

May make tuning easier,I think Mr. Shafer used the same method/style.  

Flipper rest= easier to tune and the ability to shoot vanes.  I found that my grouping got better when I tried it but I think that would strictly be on a case by case basis.  I know Paul advocated the rest for vanes on his bows.  When hunting in a rainforest, vanes and a rest can make things much simpler.  

Downside, looks funny on a longbow.    

I tried flippers a few years back and didn't like them.  Much later I tried the plain old Bear Weather rest.  Those I like, I've got a couple bows set up with them now.  I seem to get better flight and I think my accuracy has also improved.

I still shoot woodies and feathers though.  I think a Weather rest will shoot vanes, but I haven't tried it.

Works real good on the Silvertip; I made these in anticipation of hunting said rainforest

Cool! I would try em, but I heard from Woody Sanford (Magnus Broadheads) that they have a bad effect on blood trails. You see, according to him, they are so stiff, they have the same effect as a dull broadhead and promote coagulation. Not sure if that's a big deal or not, but it scared me LOL

I've heard the "no shooting in the house" bit from the wife too! I was thinking on my next bow to try the elevated rest and have a set of arrows made up with vanes on them. Hunting in the rain with wet feathers isn't fun. It seems during turkey season it rains alot. Spot and stalk for turkey in the rain can be some of the best action.

My previous post should have stated that I was using a brush rest.  For some reason I like to lump brush, flipper, and weather rests all together as the same thing.  So, to change my story, my vote is for the brush rest.  

I'm with ya Arwin, I hate the drowned rat look on my fletchings.

I decided I was going to try a rest when I got my Silvertip and I really like it.  

That is Roger Rothhaars 60x120 pattern.  Those old guys have a lot of good information if you just slow down and LISTEN to them     .  It works with feathers too.

Ive shot about a doz animals with blazers and they all pumped good.  Thats with wheels though
