I have a '62 Kodiak Magnum with an original or at least very old leather side plate in good condition. The brown surface finish, however, is flaking off.

Is there a "best" way to paint or stain the leather to return its original brown color in an even finish?

If you have flaking on the surface it means that the bond between the top grain and the underlying fiber has dried and broken.  The grain is what is flaking off.  The leather has reached the end of it's useful life and should be replaced.
This is a minor repair so don't despair.

I made my own with a small piece of brown leather cut to form and then I embossed it with a ruler and pointed tool.

Bob York in PA makes a very nice repro.

Thanks! I got the hand lens out and I see exactly what you are referring to Brad.

Reddoge - I'll try making a new one per your tip and see if I can end up with something that looks original but reflects some personal investment in the bow.
