1957 Kodiak white glass

I traded for this Kodiak last week,it was advertised as a 1958. It is a good little shooter.

Nice bow. There was more than one riser shape in 1958 but none were as small as the 1957's with the white glass, which I believe yours to be.
I have one in 60" and 52#. There are examples of 64" white glass '57 Kodiaks as well but they are exceedingly rare. And the 60" bows are certainly not common.

It was my understanding that the early '58s were made, using the same forms, like the '57 except with the white glass. The later '58s then were made with the wider, "sow belly" riser. If I'm wrong I apologize.

Great looking bow......is that original or has it been refinished? I own a sow belly, 60"/57# and love the way it shoots.

It looks like its had to have been cleaned up at some point, but Im not for sure. It is a pepe little shooter.

I am seeing indentations in the glass that appear to me to indicate work being done on the bow. What rather alarms me is that they are across the grain of the glass. I suspect that the glass has a thin coat of paint on it. If it were mine I would be asking if there were cracks in the finish that someone scraped on or if there was any damage to the glass.

That is a good looking bow. it would be welcome on my wall anyday. Nice find.

I bought a 64"/52# version of what looks like the same bow - my # is EC511 with an "A" over it. The leather grip and sidewall seem to be original. It has a red 5 feather rest.
Does the white glass make it a '58 or does the shape make it a '57? If the # is the actual indicator of year, how does it do this?

The bow was refinished at one point as I used to be in possession of that bow. It was loaned to my son for a year by a very good friend of mine. I didn't know he was getting rid of it or I'd be the owner. If you ever decide to get rid of it please put me on your list . I have some fond memories of my son and I walking the woods during hunting season while he carried that bow.

That white glass 58 you traded me has become my favorite. It's helped my back recovery being so smooth. Shoot it almost every day, course helps not having any snow here in SC

The "White Glass 1957 Kodiak" is a term I coined many years ago to make it easy to identify this style of bow that was made in three lengths, 56", 60" 64", as shown below.

The term "White Glass 1957 Kodiak" is self explanatory and eliminates all the BS "sow belly", "indented belly" and associated confusion.

There are three variations in the form used to make the 1958 Kodiak sow belly and actually the most common variation of the "sow belly" is not even shown in 1958 Bear catalog... go figure...

There are many inconsistencies in the Bear Catalogs and many transition bows such as the White Glass 1957 Kodiak.

Compare what you see in the 1957 and 1958 Bear Catalogs to actual 1957 and 1958 Bear bows and you will find an incredible number of variations...

Wade - Takes you back to the days when everything wasn't made by CNC robots. Every 50s bow still has the spirit of the people who made them hanging on.

Makes it hard for me to refinish anything.
