The 1957 Kodiak Special arrived yesterday.  Excellent condition for any bow and especially for a 57 year old one.
One of the micarta tip overlays is missing so I will retip the bow.  The remaing overlay is a combination of brown, red, and white material.  It has five or six layers. This stuff is thin!  The red is not much thicker than a fingernail.

Does anyone know where I might find some material that is thin? The stuff that the bow building suppliers sell is way too thick for this job.

Sometimes the free samples of countertop materials at the home improvement stores can be used. Lots of colors and materials available free.

.030 core tuff maybe someone has some scraps

I never thought about  countertop laminate.  I thought that the color was surface only on that stuff.  At least the pieces of it that I have seen that were broken had an ugly brown base to them.

I will see about getting some information about the thin core tuff.

Hello I used heavy construction paper and epoxy
tho I did not quite get the color correct.
But the layered effect came through pretty good.

The one on the left is the new one I created.  The tip on the right is from another bow

Few years ago, I had a 1956 that I ended up giving to Stickshooter's wife, Shell. It was missing a tip overlay, and searching around here, I found out the original tip overlays were made of carboard.

She was going to get the bow refinished by BowDoc, last I heard.....

unless you want it circa its best to use glass of some kind for durability-like glass tipping a 59 kodiak

I started doing some research on knife scales which are very similar to micarta.  It looks pretty easy to make so I will play with it a bit.  Construction paper, linen, and other things can be used to make it.

I will go with paper on this bow because it is so nice already that I don't want any "customizing" done to it.  The beat up old 59 that I restored got fiberglass tips put on it.
