arrow/broadhead combo for bear/hog.

Hello everyone, im new to the forum, and to traditional archery. Ive been at it a year, and harvested a small buck so far. I live in arkansas, and have the opportunity to hunt hogs and bear. I flubbed a shot on a cinnamon color bear this year, and a 300 lb boar hog was shot near my house. The hog sign is getting prolific. anyway, my question is HOW HEAVY AN ARROW/BROADHEAD SHOULD I SHOOT? I shoot a 55lb fred bear montana longbow. What are some good combonations? Ill only be shooting 20-25 yards max, so i dont really care about flat shooting, I want penetration. thanks!

with bears you really cant go wrong just dont hit shoulder and your good, about any non replacable head.
hogs require some more umph in general

you'll do well with something around 580gr to 620gr. EFOC helps too. i'd go with a nice sharp 2 blade.

Inside 25 yards, go with the above reccomendations.  I personally really like the Axis FMJ shafts with a ton of weight up front.  They are skinny and hit like a ton of bricks.  Straight carbons with brass or steel inserts and a heavy sharp 2 blade single bevel will blow thru a big hog at the poundage.

Lucky fella to be able to hunt hogs out the back door.   I have to travel 10 to 12 hours to get into hogs.

Thanks for the info guys! Ive been bowhunting for 25 years,but with compounds with sights.I made the switch to traditional last year,and I fear my compound bow wont harvest anthing but dust anymore! Traditional shooting makes me feel like a kid again. I love it. Thanks again.

Well,you know that arrow placement is one of the main factors,with a sharp good design BH.I can say that around 10-12 gfp is pretty good.A tough 2 blades or a very sharp WW 3 bl can easyly make the job done.

Try a 160gr STOS with 125gr steel insert (285gr total) up front and you will be amazed at your arrow flight and penetration. There are some great 300gr broadheads out there as well, they are three bladed and would be great for bear/hog. On real big hogs I like 2 blades like the STOS above.

I shoot 50 lbs. and a Gold Tip arrow with a weight tube(5 gr per inch)100 grain brass insert, 2 blade 125 gr. Magnus, total weight 570 grains.
I've had good penetration on hogs with that set-up. I recommend keeping shots close on hogs.

I've had no problems with 50-55# longbows and 525 grain arrows in wood, aluminum, and carbon.  My biggest bear to date weighed a bit over 300# (cedar arrow and two blade Zwickey Delta).

STOS and ABowyer Brown Bears are fine heads for both animals.
