Powerbond Adhesive for Carbons

I recently was given a bottle of powerbond adhesive, a product from Bohning for carbon arrow inserts. So far, this is the best I've ever used for carbon arrows. I've been extremely pleased with not only how strong it holds, but it's very slight flexibility that keeps it from breaking the bond after multiple severe hits like some other adhesives I've tried in the past(slow cure 2 part epoxy, fast cure 2 part, superglues of various natures, goat tuff, low temp hot melt, high temp, and on and on).

It reacts a lot like gorilla glue, and may be the same...though they say it's not. It expands and "foams" slightly as it cures. The guy that gave me the bottle said it was "messy" and didn't like it. If you put too much on, it is very messy...but with a bit of practice, and spartan application instead of covering the parts, it's very "clean". Good applicator bottle and simple instructions.

Highly recommend it if you are looking for something to make carbons that much more dependable.

I was thinking about trying this glue as I see it is heat reversable. Have you tried it on aluminums? Am I right in in assuming you are using it to glue points and inserts in? Thanks, Jim.

Good to hear, Ive got a bottle coming from 3 rivers to test. Atleast I know it works now.

Jim, I didn't know about heat reversability...but that sure is a plus.

I have not used it on aluminum arrows and aluminum inserts but have had great success with both brass and aluminum inserts for my carbon arrows.

I also have done a few broadheads and a judo with it but have yet to really run those through the ringer to see if it works as well on them. I can't see why it wouldn't work very well in this application too...but no personal testimonies there yet.

I have taken a tap an made very light threads inside my goldtips and use gorilla glue {stand the arrows on inserts to let dry so the foaming action does not push inserts out overnight}I have hit everything you can think of stump shooting and have not had one even think of backing out...

I have had em back out with powerbond. It is good stuff though. Anybody try JB Weld?

I have tried to remove inserts from carbon shafts after using powerbond and ruined two shafts. It pulled rings out after heating the point a little at a time. I don't think is is very reversible.

I use a small saber saw blade, enough to rough the inside of the shaft, clean with light actone, small amount of power bond, never had any problems. I have tried 24hr. and 5min. stuff, when it gets cold, it is to brittle.

I love it and I can remove an insert with heating a little at a time no problem, quick melt and hot melt isnt as durable with carbon and Ive used powerbond on wood and alum and it works great!!

JC glad you've had good luck. I bought it because it was heat reversible, and it is, just be careful. Leave a target point in and heat it. Douse the shaft in water once you pull the insert. However, I too have had several back out on me. They've pulled out when pulling from a stump mostly. I switched back to GoatTuff. I may have gotten a bad bottle. It seems to have gotten a little crystalized inside of the bottle (yes, I did put the cap back on!).

I have not tried Power bond, but everything else under the sun has failed unless it is 24 hour FLEXIBLE epoxy.
The one I use now is from Golf works called "Shafting Epoxy". It is available from any golf pro shop. They use it for carbon shafts to club heads.
It has to be flexible for clubs and it has to be impact resistant.It is.
This is the best glue I have used.
It is a slow cure, 24 HR and you have lots of time to work with it before it starts to set.

That's good advice Pete, I may see what the golf pro shop up at the outlet mall has. Whatever you use, it does have to have some flex in it for carbon shafts.

Don't know about jb weld, never tried that.

I've used it on Gold Tips for my son, he loses inserts from time to time, but usually due to a hard hit.  I've never tried to heat reverse it on carbon, but I had put some adapters in broadheads with it, and it took the heat of Hades to get them out!

Rod Jenkins put me on to this stuff.One thing I like a lot about it is the working time you have after mixing it. There is no hurry at all needed.After an hour it is still workable.

I did an unplaned torture tests at -30 and a frozen birch tree .  It held !. LOL

Never tell yourself to just skim by that tree. It moves your focus to the tree.

LOL, I've learned that lesson too many times Pete...now if it would just stick with me!

Longer working times would help. I'll make a trip this week and try it on my next batch. So far this powerbond works wonderfully, but always looking for something better, Thanks.
