Bow season is around the corner here in Ontario canada.

Lets hear some stories, advice, see some pics and share gear set ups from seasoned moose traditional bow hunters. What worked for you ?

This will be my 3rd year, 1st year going solo DIY. Northern Ontario.

Bow is 65#@30", shooting a 525 grain 340 easton axis arrow. Pretty straight out to 30 yards, beyond that I don't think I'd range that far with good penetration. Its a close quarters game up there anyways so I expect to be in tight with them.

I'm more of a moose hunter than a killer so far    Been on 4 moose hunts in AK, 2 in BC, and one in Newfoundland, and I've killed 2 bulls. Heading up in a couple weeks for another Alaska hunt. Moose hunting gets in your blood.

I've killed mine with recurves around 60 lbs, arrows around 650-700 grains, and big Snuffer broadheads.

As far as distance....closer the better! Nothing beats shooting a moose so close that you are shooting up at him!

Been watching the weather n Fairbanks and it looks like fall is coming!

You said it my friend. Newfoundland is a dream of mine. This time of the year it is all I can think about. Were your bulls all with trad equipment?

If you get Traditional Bowhunter Magazine, I think Terry Recurver wrote an article on the basic tenets Bryan Burkhart, Mike Mitten, myself, and Terry use use when hunting moose.  I haven't read the final version yet, but the rough draft had a lot of good information.

Cool stories, thanks for the links. Been reading em all.

We work on a nation to nation basis with a tribe of anishnabe folk from up north to obtain a legal permit for an inter tribal harvest. Myself, being mohawk. Its in accordance with old treaties we have. In return they come and harvest on our territory too. MNR has this written into law that this is legal if all parties are "status indian". Kind of archaic if you ask me, but hunting is a human right.

You're not alone. The group that I hunt with hasn't had a tag in several years either. Lots of moose where we hunt, but the gun hunters get almost all the tags. This year there were only 12 archery tags available.
Bow hunting moose is an awesome experience, but it's not for anyone who hasn't got patience or expects instant success. I have had several really nice bulls and a few cows in front of me, but I have yet to draw on one. Maybe I'm too cautious, waiting for a good shot. The closest I came so far was a 48 + inch bull . He was about 65 yards away when we spotted him and we called him toward us. He walked directly towards us and at about 30 yards the wind swirled and he caught our scent. A frontal shot wasn't an option for me. Still, what an experience!
