First Day, First Trad Kill

I love to hear of first time success with trad stuff. As you already know, keep your arrows landing right there and you will not have to look far for your deer.

It will be the best eating ven you have ever had.

Tell us about the hunt! Were you in a ground blind? Treestand? What is the area you hunt, surbian deer in your neighborhood, or in a special "urban deer zone"?

Nice job brother, I live in Northern Kentucky and I have been out 4 times now, seeing deer, but no shot opportunities yet. It's been beautiful cool weather here lately though.

I am lucky to live in a neighborhood with alot of deer outside Pittsburgh.  PA requires 50 yard safety zone from buildings.  I can get that in part of my yard... not by alot though.  From my experience, if you are doing something common like mowing the lawn, the suburban deer could care less... but if you are sneaking around in camo... or up in a tree... anything that is strange for them... then suburban deer are still deer, and they can be as tough to fool as anything in North America.

This one popped out behind me and heard my climbing harness catch the seat as I stood up (I hate those early season/new equipment faux pas).  She was on high alert but after 10 minutes finally managed to walk around me, stomping the whole way.  

I was in a tree but the ground sloped such that she was probably only 6-8 feet lower in elevation.
She got broadside at about 16 yards, still slowly walking and stomping.  No-sights lends itself well to taking a moving animal.  I let her have it in slow mid-stride so she wouldn't jump the string.  

From my visual, I thought I had hit very low with bad penetration and was trying to figure out how I could have made such a poor shot.  But with the arrow snapped off at the fletch and the frothy paintbrush trail through the grass and the woods, I was quickly convinced that I must have been mistaken.  I was so surprised to find a nice Stinger gash right on the dot behind the shoulder.  I've shot many deer with a tricked out compound, but this trad shot was probably the bloodiest trail.

That is awesome...I'm new this year also to traditonal.  Picked up a Savannah in Feb and have shot it a ton all spring and summer.

Years past I would pick up my compound and start in late August or early September and be spot on.

With no sights it's a whole different ball game and one I'm totally in love with.  I have shot every weeks (3-5) times a week since Feb and have gotten much better.

Can't wait going to be in the woods opening night with my best friend and will be using nothing but traditional this fall.

Congratulations!  I am north of you only 1 1/2 hours and am so jealous of the early opportunities!  I too am going for my first trad kill this year.
