Last day of Cohutta archery season.....
And I broke me bloody arrow......
Tease! :D
Ohhh Boy!!!!!!!!!!!! :campfire:
You broke it or a deer broke it???
Must of broke it due to wind planning caused by that "really wide" broad head! Or there another reason.....
Took a shower and thought I'd check back before bed....
Deer???
I don't go to the Cohutta Wilderness to hunt no stinkin deer!!!
You can't do that???? C'mon, I gotta work all day tomorrow Terry!
Something has a Big hole in it! :D
:coffee: :coffee:
bear or pig? which one was it?
I smell something cookin'!
tap tap tap tap etc etc ... :)
I'm gonna guess a hog lost his life with that arrow...in the past, Terry usually mentions "Cohutta" and "Big ol greasy hog" in the same sentence....
Poh-balla arrow, dat one.
Well I do see blood soaked feathers. Did it make a spark or start a fire when it hit the big rock? With that much head up front somthing had to happen.
ha ha ha the suspence
Looking forward to hearing more.
:campfire: :campfire: :campfire: Now out with it!
Well here it is the next day already, how late you gonna sleep!! Story man, time for the story!
:coffee:
If you were an old geezer, you'd be up by now.
Come on you're killing us now.
Wake up Mr Sleepy head!!!!! Time to tell your story..... :biglaugh:
Come on Terry! Rise and shine! Spill your guts!
That looks like a big old "bear" head! The kids have to be off to school by now!
C'mon Tarz! We can't 'BEAR' the suspense much longer.
'Fess up!!
:clapper: :goldtooth:
I think it was a big mountain rooter....
Any time now!!!!!
I don't know what your season structure is down there, but I hope like heck you're about to tell us you finally killed a bear. I know you've been after them for a long, long time now.
Not that I wouldn't be happy to see a dead pig on here. But I'm really, really hoping you're clearing some wall space for bear skin rug.
Terry Lamb. :p
I'm betting a catamount-paintner-mtn. lion-panther-cougar-wild cat...
Or SOMETHIN' that can climb a tree if'n it wants! :saywhat:
Silence of The Lambs. :scared:
Sorry Guys...been frantic around here.
Yeah...I put two big holes in it and my buddy Doug Johnson put three more in it for good measure. What a WILD RIDE it was last evening....and it all happened so fast...
Wasn't able to scout at all before the season, and haven't been able to hunt much either, and the area I wanted to hunt due to downed trees from all the rain we'd had down here in the last two and a half weeks. It rained again on us last night. If it don't stop raining, we are gonna rot.
But last night the road was clear....no more defaulting to 2nd or 3rd rate areas...
DiStefano has rung.....
Just keep that computer dry and tell us the rest of the story.
_
T
5 Holes in one animal...You hunting Sasquatch.
Come on now tell the story with pics hopefully
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
hope there is something left after that many holes. Lets hear the rest, DiStefano can't talk that long, can he? :smileystooges:
:readit: I belive its story time ... tap tap tap :readit:
We'd also met up with Keith Westbrook in Chatsworth....and he got to hear the 'final battle' from a long distance away.
Did I tell ya Doug gets excited?
Oh for the love of Christ!
Why?!! :readit:
OK...dropped Keith off at on a Saddle with an old loggin road that he could patrol back and forth if he wanted to....or spy from the saddle.
He was in the same area where I killed that nice Cohutta Hog during turkey season and he was with me then....so he was happy.
Fantasy Goddess rang....
I left Keith and walked down and west to meet up with Doug who was stalking his way into a creek crossing where we were to meet up.
The plan was for us to go up this special hollow bout a hundred yards and split up left and right for another 2 or 3 hundred yards or so where we could guard several finger ridge dump offs in the bottom.
We only made it in about 50 yards and we found two piles of bear scat....fresh bear scat....the kind you want to find and hunt over fresh. As we move a head a few more yards and started our split I saw more piles and whistled for Doug. We regrouped and observed the white oak destruction laying on the ground before us. We also heard a 'squirrel' in a tree about 30 yards away. So we looked for the 'squirrel' and were content that there was no big black squirrel in the tree and discussed that Doug would come back and hunt this tree if he didn't find a more likely area around to the left where he was headed.....and I would stay my course....so we split....but not for long....Doug veered 15 yards left, and I veered 15 yards right.....and it was ON!!!....
It was "on like donkey kong" it sounds like!!!!
Don' stop now.
Now there is story telling, and there is just being mean. hahaha
Five arras in a bear! Musta been one big mean A$$ bear. I would have put my money on a big old hog for sure once you said five arras.
I'm trying guys!!!!....beats all I ever seen...the phones are ringing off the hook. I'm heading to lunch with the FG...and will be back later this afternoon.
BTW...I only called home to make sure my girls didn't get go to bed till I got home...and my mom who worries over me something fierce over my hunting passion. No time to call anyone else as Doug and I just kept replaying all the details all the way down the mountain and and on the pavement all the way home.
Dave....not five arrows...five HOLES....just 3 arrows.
Ughhhhh?! Not sure how to do that math.
I will have to wait for the update.
Math:
2 passthroughs + 1 stuck arrow = 5 holes.
Congrats.
Ok, so I will say it:
Hurry up with the story already, I can BEARly stand the suspense.
Sounds good to me. You guys must use up all yuour cell minutes telling stories this way. Now on with it....
:goldtooth:
Ive been watching this thread since 7:30am and still no photos! I think im gonna go crazy :help: :help:
:campfire:
OK....so, Doug and I are now 30 yards apart...and yells in a whisper, yeah, hunters can do that ya know...."Bear! - Bear Right Here! - Right Here"!
I start looking and nocking an arrow but see no bear anywhere...Doug whisper yells a little louder, "Right here in Tree get over here"!!! So, I quickly move toward Doug in a haste watching my steps down and through the creek all the while trying to look up and see the bear. After clearing the creek I see Doug looking straight up!!! He's 6 feet from the tree and I look up and spotted blacky as well and moved in to within about 10 feet. The bear is now on to us and is manuvering to get a better view of the what's going on below. Bad move on the bear's part....

That's probably because you're dragging this out and killing us slowly. I have your number in my cell phone, and I'm not afraid to call it! :D
Jason...unfortunately.....no, scratch that, fortunately its business calls!!! Can't turn those away in this economy, or the game and fish trying to get a tag on the hide and a tooth.
Just what a carpet mogul needs... a rug. I know you can't put off the hero picture much longer...
Come on already, my old heart cannot take much more suspense,LOL.
Now, I don't really know how to judge bear sizes other than small, medium, and large....and I knew this one was a medium but a shooter for sure. I've passed up plenty of 'small' medium legal shooters in passed years, and mommas with cubs, but sure had fun messing with them, and had a few close calls with some on the large size that didn't come together.
All I know was I was on the ground with a longbow and it looked like a medium shooter to me 70 feet up in that white oak. I also know when I'm offered a 'target'....and one appeared.
Blacky was positioned in the 'U' shaped fork of the trunk and a big limb and had both front legs through the fork and was peering down at us. I saw the position and all I had to do was put the arrow right under it's chin and right over the fork. Hence the title of the thread....
Doug was looking at the same place I was, but had no idea I was drawing the bow, and when he saw my bright fletched arrow with that mini hatchet on the end enter the chest just under the chin....he didn't whisper, instead he very audibly said "UH - OH!!!!"
It had officially hit the fan!!!!!....
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Terry don't you dare stop now. I have to run to town and wont be back until later.
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Killing....me....s-l-o-w-l-y.... :(
This is interesting, now. :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Now see what you gone and did Bear, you laughed at him. Now he'll make us all wait. :knothead: lol
Tee-hee-hee! It's almost as much fun watching all you squirmers as the story unfolding!!
Gotta run meet the game and fish......finish up this evening....sorry guys....
:campfire: :campfire: :coffee:
Terry we need glass of wine icon it's gettin too late in day to drink coffee!
:banghead: I gotta work tomorrow. hope this gets finished tonight.
UH-OH!!! was right....here comes Blacky down the tree and we are poised to loose more arrows and we did, but blacky threw us a curve by leaping out at about the 15 foot mark. It it lands 6 yards from Doug who shoots, and I'm right behind him with my follow up as he appears on my side of the tree carrying the mail...both arrows ricochet off the saplings like pin-balls and within 3 seconds the bear disappeared into the sapling filled bottom like Batman vanishing into the Bat Cave.....all was silent for now....
We gathered our wits for a brief moment, collected our errant arrows and found blood immediately and started on the trail that was obvious at this point. After about 20 yards of good blood, we'd entered the vanishing point that was filled with 12 to 15 foot white pines just as a dark low cloud moved over head. Combining that with the 2 weeks of rain making the ground a dark brown it was almost like the last 15 minutes of shooting light, but it was only 5:15 PM. I was straining my eyes for blood that was plainly there once I found it but straining to find it none the less. Doug decided to make a short sneak loop to the left off what we felt was the blood line area to look a head, and I got out my Wensel Brother's flashlight. BAMB!....Blood City...I was walking now at a good clip and I told Doug the trail took a right veer. Doug and I both knew we were sure where the bear was headed as it was the least resistance direction with little uphill elevation, so without me even saying anything to Doug he headed right where I was thinking. Yeah, hunters can do that ya know. ;)
Doug had no more that gotten out of sight and it was hitting the fan again!!!....
Good stuff, Terry!
Bear, blood and hitting the fan, oh my.....
ANNNNDDDD!!!!!!
I hear Doug yell, not sure what all he is yelling but I hear the word BEAR! for sure several times amongst other garbled words along with my name.
I knock an arrow as I don't know if the bear is coming or going...but more yells ring out a little further away. I take my judo point out and stick it in the ground at last blood, move off to the right about 5 yards to try and stay off what I think is the blood line and I take off toward the ruckus.
I stop as I hear yet more yelling, barking, whooping and growling and I fear Doug is in a fight so I start carrying the mail myself in a panic for my long time hunting partner.
As I cleared the white pines and hopped up onto an old logging road I see Doug up ahead strutting around like a bantam rooster, much like Lawrence Taylor after a quarterback sack, still making victory war hoops as the bear laid dead just beyond him. And for good reason.....Doug done good let me tell ya!!!
Doug had spotted the bear laying facing away from him like a gator and its ears sticking up gave it away. Doug moved in and the bear stood and started to leave and he managed to get two more arrows into the bear. The 1st one entered the rear ham on the right side penetrating about 17 inches. Doug caught up to within 10 yards and it turned broadside, looked Doug in the eyes and growled. So, Doug let her have it passing the next Wensel Woodsman slap though it mid ship. Blacky was done,.... fell over stone dead.
The celebration was something special as Doug and I have been chasing bears for years in these special mountains, both pulling for each other as much as we pulled for ourselves. We'd surely hunt solo up there at times, but as Doug mentioned, if one of us was there and the other wasn't, something was missing. We'd shared so many memories over the years in the Wilderness together. So many chases, close calls, what if's, if only's and on and on and on. For us both to share in our 1st bear kill together was quiet poetic.....and probably fate. It was only fitting, ......and ever so sweet.
I don't know who was more excited......does it really matter?
What a ride!!!
What a Hunt!!!
What a memory between two life long friends!!!

I've got a few more details of the hunt I'll share tomorrow....gotta get some rest tonight.
Thanks for the comments guys...we are still riding the wave for sure!
Deadpool....it was one of those 'special run' Silver Flames that's 2 inches wide.
BTW...Doug made a couple of calls while I called mom and Carmen. There were crowds at both houses when we arrived. Lots of comments about the size of the gash in the chest and out the back of the bear from that Silver Flame. 'They' just couldn't believe a broadhead could do such a thing.
Awesome story. It was even gettin me worked up!
Congratulations!
:goldtooth:
terry I should have know that was a silverflame, that things looks devastating!!

Terry and Doug, Im reading you're story and Im smiling from ear to ear , what great story to share, and with a good friend, thats just deadgum good one for sure!!!!! congrats!!! :wavey: :clapper:
Gatekeeper....there was no 'official' autopsy. We had a bear to get out of the wilderness. Not very many pictures either.
My arrow entered the chest left of center, hit vertical, and exited the left side of the spine out the top of the back taking out a lung but went over the heart. The bear was definately in its death bed when Doug spotted it as it had lost a LOT of blood in the 150 yards. But I'm certainly glad Doug got in on the action. We had breakfast yesterday and are already planning next years season.
BTW, that head is still starp as the day I got it cept one little spot.
Also broke in my newest Doug Campell knife.

Entrance....Doug kinda had this spread out a bit...it was open about 3rd of that, but was also a 3rd longer.

TTT
Thanks for bumping this, Terry.
The story reads as good as your podcast, but I didn't have to endure the wait like everybody else in this thread! :campfire:
Enjoyed this and the podcast.
Oh....and BTW... the bear was 10 years old....pics did not do justice.
What a hunt!
Thanks for taking us along, Terry. I enjoyed the ride.
I've never hunter Cohutta but fished it once. It was more mountain climbing than fishing.
