I've been using a home made spine tester for my tapered ramin shafts for the past couple of years but after a while I felt like I could use something a little quicker and more consistant for measureing spine. So my wife bought me a Ace spine tester for Christmas to help me out. The instructions say, if the shafts are tapered, place the middle of the taper over mid-point support/knob on the scale. My tapers are usually 18-20" long on 3/8 ramin shafts.
So, you guys with long tapers, do you still measure at the mid-point on the shaft? I just want to make sure I'm doing things mostly right before I start bare shafting.

Yes, you should place the midpoint of the shaft over the center support to get the most consistant measurement. The quickest way is to put a mark or tape on the wall to show where the end of your shaft goes. You'll get very consistant reading that way.
