I saw a great looking skinner a little while ago. Today I tried to forge up my version of it. I left it rather beefy and will probably do a hollow grind as the blade is rather deep. Might just end up on the bear skinnin' table this spring for reviews...Doc
Course mine won't look this pretty!

My rough forged shape.

Love that handle material, and the Damascus is gorgeous.
Looks like a real good start there Doc.
Lookin' good, for sure! I agree, the original is a beaut too.
BLASTED! DoC PM!<><
looks like you got the shape really close , good luck with it ( as if you need luck ) :biglaugh:
Well get on with it Doc, I wanna see what kind of creative license you take with it. Nice BTW!! :bigsmyl:
I like it!
WOWSERS!! On both knives!!! Be sure to post a completed pic too....please! LOL
Call it hunch, but I think I'm gonna like your version better :) I love the simple damascus, but a lot of the new stuff is just too busy!
That mammoth ivory is something else though!!
I put a hollow grind on the skinner with a 10" wheel today. The larger wheel make the hollow grind less aggressive but still takes a good amount of steel out of the blade. Especially since I left the forged blank fairly thick. It leaves the blade with a nice profile and plenty of backbone to the spine. That's all for today as I gotta go root my New England team on...Doc
PS: The original skinner was make by Master Bladesmith Ray Kirk. It is just an awesome knife.

Awesome! Can't wait to see the next step.
Great looking knife Doc!
Mmmmmmmmmmm - mmmmmmmmmmmmm - mmmmmmmmmmm! Gotta be skill and not the wheel to make that blad that pretty, that early!

Nice!
I'll take the bottom one...... :bigsmyl:
Man those are nice!! Pure torture since you dont sell them! LOL
Well it's snowing here so I'll have to wait to take the dogs for a walk. So I re-visited that skinner. It just didn't feel right in my hand. Handle seemed too long & too busy. Back to the grinder to make some adjustments and polish the blade...at least as much as I polish a blade! I think it will do to skin some bears this spring. Now what type of handle material?? Doc

Doc,
Keep up the FINE work :-)

LOL, yeah I gots plenty of wood here too!! HAHAHA
Got Osage? :bigsmyl:
Hey Doc,
Sweet as usual!
What are you quenching in?
Larry
Larry, I quench in cooking oil. I'll heat it to around 125-150 F first. Then just edge quench on my cradle that you can raise or lower by turning the carriage bolts. I'll test the depth before I heat the blade to quench. That way you can get the edge hardened and keep the spine softer for more flex to the blade. Long answer sorry Larry! Doc

Thanks Doc,
I have a similar adjustable table I use as a stop. Been using trans. fluid. But after reading Karl's responses re: quenching oils, been thinking about giving Brownells Tough Quench a try. Don't really know what if any diff. (other than less smoke) it'd make as my blades are super hard (in a sacrificial test they shatter when struck) when I take 'em out of the trans. fluid.
Thanks for the get back. Long time no 'speak'.
BTW, nice thread!! ;)
