I want to take just a tiny bit of credit for this... :D ...at the 2009 PBS Odd Year Gathering a bunch of us were shooting one of the 3D courses at The Ojibwa Bowhunters. I had UB hang back with me so he could shoot my new TallTines at a few targets unmolested. That was all it took and the order was in.
Fast forward to this weekend...
This should not be all Lambed up, but Barry is MUCH better with the TallTines and killing SMOKER bucks than he is with computers. I should have some pictures here as soon as I can talk him off the ledge :campfire:
WAY TO GO, BARRY!
Looking forward to the story and pics :saywhat:
Daryl
Anti-climatic....get some pics up!
AAAAHHHH, the suspense is painful.
Congrats Barry. Will be watching for pics.
"Look at this"? :dunno: :dunno:
:campfire: :archer: :coffee:
:campfire:
Sorry for the delay, but every time we go thru how to do this, I get the same look thru the phone line as the one he is giving the deer here.
:notworthy:
I am sure Barry will be in here to give the particulars and I believe we have overcome some of the technical difficulties so there will be some better pictures, but this one should give you some idea of the size of this brute. UB is not a little guy!
Geez, you guys that are up late are impatient :saywhat:
What a dandy buck! We need to hear the story!!
Congrats Barry! That is one beautiful buck!!
Looks like you have been up late too. :bigsmyl:
That is a fine Whitetail !!!
WOW !!
:notworthy:
What a beauty. Magnificent animal!
Did you snort-wheeze him, Bear-Hunting Buddy?
Wow what a toad!
Beautiful buck!!!!
Ah...congrats, again, Barry!
Can't wait to hear all the details..nice buck.
CONGRATS UNCLE BARRY
Great deer! You can get some rest now. You look whipped in the picture. Where are the smiles? Well done. :clapper: :clapper:
Another beauty!
Thats a nice buck, he must not always have his eyes closed like in this picture. Looking forward to the story as only Uncle Barry can tell it.....
FOR SURE BARRY KNOWS ABOUT BOWS AND WHITETAIL!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
That's a Brute Barry good shooten, Congrats!!
WOW!
Great buck Barry
Holy cow!!!
Hey uncle Barry, all the hunters at my house have read the new book(s), and we KNOW how much EFFORT goes into the success enjoyed by the "brothers of the bow". The proof is in the pudding.
Saturday afternoon, as we drove to our hunting spot, my son Nick asked the question from the tiny back seat of the pick up, "do you think the Gene or Barry got a buck yet?". When I wake him up for school, he will be THRILLED to know!!!
(we met all of you at K-zoo, and he has spread the word about Brothers of the Bow)
Sincere congrats...
Beautiful buck!
:campfire:
Here are a couple more pics to give a better perspective:

And I think this is the best one so far...that is a 60" bow!
I believe the TallTines is 63# with a Bolivian Rosewood riser and Myrtle limbs, but UB can correct all that when he wakes up from his beauty sleep...hah!
Awesome!
Awesome buck Barry,Congratulations
Wow! What a beauty, CONGRATS!!!
That is a beast of a deer! Way to go UB!
That is a beast of a deer! Way to go UB!
Way to go..Congrats. He is very handsome. The buck I mean..
Holly Godzilla Barryman !!!!!
Great animal :)
:saywhat: YOOOOOWZA! Congratulations, Barry :notworthy:
Is that Hurly?
Big eights are the berries, or in this case, Barry's. Sorry, sorry.
May just be the deer's body is so large, but it appears Barry has slimmed down a little. Maybe he goes in rut around this time of year, too.
What a Toad!! Congrats!!
God Bless,
Nathan
What a brute. Congrats.
I didn't know there were moose in Iowa.
Heck, all I saw was Barry in the pic the 1st couple times I looked at it:) That buck ain't bad! LOL!
That is a Brute!!!
Great buck Barry congrats.
That is NOT Hurley.
This is Hurley from last year:

Notice "poor" Barry's empty tree stand in the background. Sounds like he has grown a bit this year and that trail cam pic doesn't do him any justice.
Wow that is a great deer. Congrat Barry!!
Congratulations Barry!!!
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
From the look of Barry's face in the first picture, this was just another day at the office. ;)
awesome!!!!
Wow, he's a brute! Congrats Barry! Y'all sure do have some hammers out your way.
JL
That's a nice one Barry, congrats.
DON'T tell the guys over on the thread bashing Woodsman broadheads about this one.....
Good one Biggie !
Uncle Barry and Steve O, when I first saw the pics opening up I thought all my Birthdays were coming at once, WOW what a bruiser ! Can't wait for UB to tell the whole tale. How long are those G2's ??? Geeeez !
Gotta love those big eights!!!!!
 :clapper: :clapper:
WOW!!! :notworthy: :notworthy:
WOW!! Congrats
I appreciate your patience. I promise to relay the whole story blow by blow as soon as I can. I've been trying to take care of the deer and still need to go to town and re-register to vote since our change of address. I really apologize for making everyone wait. Thanks guys. Stay tuned! BW
What a stud! The buck is not bad either! Congrats on an awesome buck!
holy cow. what a nice deer.
Joe
Wow! Way to go. I can't wait to hear the story. I also see a broken shaft and those fletchings look awful dry in that photo. Gotta be a good story to go with that!
Not bad for a short, fat, aging bald guy....I can relate.
Well, while we are waiting for Mr. Crooked Hat Chronicles, I've gone thru my correspondence from the brothers and here is Hurley from this year:

Speechless......... :clapper:
I like Barry's buck better...Hurley has too much junk sticking out all over
Where's Gene's?
Ho humm - Barry shoots another monster.
That is awsome- congratulations!
I agree with ya Biggie... Barrys buck is just plain awesome- width, tine length, and mass. Not saying Hurley isn't cool- he certainly is, but like the looks of Barrys buck better.
Congrats Barry- looking forward to the tale....
Great buck!!! I just read his book...maybe I'll catch a little mojo through the pages
i want to hunt there!
VERY NICE UB!!
Congrats
chris <><
WOW!!!!!
:scared:  Holy Cannoli! Now that's a BUCK! :readit: :saywhat: Was anyone filming I hope I hope! :banghead:
Congrats Barry, what a buck. Glad to see some luck fell your way this time. Can't wait to hear this story. :campfire:
:What a Buck. :archer2:
:campfire: :coffee:
Beautiful!!
Very nice !
Man what deer. Congratulations. Now I have something else to dream about. Hopefully he has a cousin that has migrated to Maine. :biglaugh:
Doesn't get much better! :clapper:
Another great buck taken by BW. Still waiting to hear every detail.
Now thats what I call a buck.. love to have that story!!
Year after year. You would think the Wensels would get bored with taking such animals. Well, maybe not.
What a beautiful deer, congrats Barry, looking forward to the story.......
David
unbelievable ! You Wensels are rough on em.
WOW...that's an awesome deer!...congrats Barry!!
Gosh, a cull? One more year and he would've been a decent buck. Just sayin' :dunno:
Congrats Barry! What a buck! Details?
Okay.. thanks for your patience guys. Half the fun is sharing this stuff with those who understand.
You know it's like we're all a bunch of dudes with the same disease or psychological disorder and can relate. Ha.
I'll try not to milk this out but I have to admit it was really special. Most of you know Gene and I are pretty picky. Our goals are about the same, fully mature buck of 5 1/2 yrs. or older, approx. 160 inches of antler and under the 20 yard line. I know this might make some people jealous but I've pretty much patterned my life to be able to do what I do. It's taken a lot of sacrifice in more ways than one.
Last fall on October 28th I missed the one I named Hurley (because I felt like hurling when my arrow went over his back). We got trail camera pics of him this early fall so he was my main objective. There were higher scoring bucks around but I wanted Hurley for personal reasons and because I had history with him.
We have several stands set up for him but I tried to hunt him only with perfect winds and sparingly so as not to pressure him out of his area. Since Oct. 1st I've passed up four bucks over 150 inches.
One was named "Holyfield" (we tend to name our bucks) because he has a big chunk out of his left ear. He's a standing 7x6. Another we named "Meltdown" because his one mainbeam droops down on the end like it's melted. He's a standing 6x5. But Gene and I both agreed they were each only 4 1/2 yrs. old and if given one more year would likely both be B&C class bucks when fully mature.
Last week I had Holyfield walk by at 5:15 with the sun shining on him in all his glory. I filmed him making four scrapes, doing the overhead branch thing, rubbing, peeing on his hocks, etc. He was 18 yds.
The next morning I sat the stand I missed Hurley from last year. At 8AM Meltdown followed a doe with a pretty face and hung around at 16 yds. for a solid ten minutes. I got great footage of both which I hope you'll get to see in our new DVD "Essential Encounters".. coming soon.
Saturday morning I sat a stand named "Biggie's Dentures". It's located in Biggies Bowl (where Biggie Hoffman shot his biggest buck ever)about halfway between two other stands, Biggies Upper Lip and Biggies Lower Lip (don't you love the names?)Ha.
Anyway, that morning I saw eight bucks and 12 does. Filmed a nice P&Y 5x5 buck that followed a doe right under me at 4 yds. That afternoon the winds were out of the SW and were predicted to switch out of the NW later in the afternoon. I wanted to keep out of Hurley's home for a couple days. I chose a stand we call the "Tennesee Bottoms". It's good for both SW and NW winds. It's about halfway in to the stand I killed that nice one at last fall. As soon as I crossed the creek on entering I knew my timing was right. The whole area was absolutely torn up with rubs and scrapes and I hadn't hunted it yet so it was fresh.
Between 5 PM and 6PM I'd already seen four bucks and NO does. A spike, two 4x4s and a 5x5. At about 6:10 a very nice mature 5x5 came in from over my left shoulder. He walked right passed me at 12 yds. I couldn't turn the camera on for fear of spooking him so I let him walk through, then took some footage as he walked away and then hung the camera back up. I kept looking behind him in case something was following. A couple minutes later movement catches my eye.
There's my buck up on his hind legs working over a high overhead branch. I grabbed the camcorder but just as I was turning it on he drops down, freshens the scrape and here he comes. He's only 50 yds. advancing on me so I had no time to film.
When his head went behind a tree I stood up, when his head went behind another tree I took the bow off the hook. You know how when you're in a stand you chose your "sweet spot"? It's where if you had your choice that's where I'd like my buck to be standing? Well he walked right into my sweet spot broadside at 13 yds., stopped and turned his head directly away from me.
In all honesty I hesitated shooting him because my heart was set on Hurley. But this was just too good of a 4x4 to let walk.
I was shooting my brand new Brian Wessel's Tall Tines takedown. It's a virgin. For those interested, it's 61 lbs. at 28" with a riser of Bolivian Rosewood and limbs of Black Limba. The bow just "fits" and feels right.... great job Brian!
I know this is hard to believe but of the hundreds of big game animals I've bowkilled over the years I have never spine shot a single animal. When I shot, in my minds eye, the arrow looked a little high but not much. I was absolutely shocked when he dropped right in his tracks!
To make a long story short, I finished him off as soon as I could. Then panic set in. I hadn't even touched him yet and what sounded like three coyotes blasted off howling what sounded like less than 100 yds. from us directly downwind. I'm not sure if they smelled blood and were trying to spook me off or what. But then reality struck, I was alone!
The creek I needed to cross to get him out was washed out from recent rains. The sheer walls from the top to the bottom were 30 feet straight down and back up the other side. In fact Gene and I have a rope tied to a tree where we used to cross and pretty much repel ourselves up and down. So I started dragging. I only made it about 75 yds. and was out of gas. Either I'm getting too old or this buck is just too big. Gotta go... be right back.. sorry. BW
Yeah, Barry knows how to pick them. Congrats man!
Dang these "Lamb'ed up" stories! Entertaining story thus far.
More to come. :coffee:
nice buck Barry
Sorry about that. Anyway you would have laughed at my next move. I couldn't get him out alone but I didn't want to leave him for the coyotes. So I ended up walking out almost naked. I draped about every piece of clothing I had on over his body. Shirts, sweatshirts. teeshirts, hats, vests, hankerchiefs, gloves, etc. No.. I kept my undies on. Because I was sweating like a pig I'd wipe myself with each article of clothing and covered him up like a big ol' grizz on a fresh kill. Then I walked out. I didn't sleep too well that night. The next morning a good friend Daryl Kempher from Michigan was on his way to hunt a farm about 50 miles from here. He offered to help me drag him out so I took him up on it. Gene couldn't get here until afternoon so Daryl and I pulled him out. In that circus Daryl, who's 39, fell down the side of the cliff while we were crossing. He landed hard and was rolling around on the ground in severe pain. I thought for sure he'd broken his shoulder. Here's a guy who finally drew Iowa after waiting three years and he injures himself the day before his hunting starts and doesn't know if he can draw his bow. He said "I'll draw that string if I have to draw it with my teeth"... my kind of guy. Ha. Anyway a healthy dose of Ibuprofen and he's thankfully okay now. We got the buck near the truck when Gene called and was on his way. Daryl took off and I waited for Gene to arrive. We took some great 'walk-up" footage and then had a really hard time loading him in the truck ourselves. I'm telling you, I'm jealous of you young guys anymore. A side note, when I caped him out he'd apparently been in a wicked fight. From his throat all the way down to his brisket was all bloodshot and infected from tine wounds. I'd like to see what the buck looked like that put the whooping on him. Anyway, for those who are interested in measurements, he measured 173 3/8" gross and netted 169 4/8". G2s were 13 3/8" and 13". A 140' 4x4 is a good one; a 150" 4x4 is a really good one; a 160"er is great, so it gives you some idea how really rare a 170" 4x4 is. I'm very pleased and proud of him. Hope everyone has a great season. I'll have to wait now until late season until my second buck tag becomes valid to pursue Hurley. Hopefully he'll make it... unless Gene gets him. Best of luck guys. Thanks. BW
Great story Barry, Love all the treestand and buck names!!
chris <><
Awesome Uncle B! Happy for you buddy :notworthy:
What a story. Congrats Uncle Barry!!!!!
Congratulations on an awesome deer Mr. Wensel. I'm one of the younger guys that your jealous of. But I think I'm more jealous of where you hunt! Regards, Jim
Barry,
169 4/8ths?
I think a 2x4 between those antlers while its drying for 60 days just might get him over the hump?!!!!
Congratulations, UB!!
Congrats!!! Can't wait to rib Daryl a bit when he gets back home LOL :)
When I grow up I want to be just like Uncle Barry...Man that is one very fine buck and just what drives us all to hunt...Thanks for the great pics at different angles Uncle Barry it just makes me want to get out in the great outdoors that much more...Good read and Congratulations ..God Bless, Keefer's <")))><
Congrats Barry, he's a stud.

To see this would be worth the price of admission! :notworthy:
Thanks UB for not stranding us and getting the story out ! Even more impressive is that you took care of the voting thing first ! A lot of men gave the ultimate sacrifice for us to have that right. I cannot even imagine what it must feel like to pass that many P & Y's at less than 20 yds ? With that many encounters do you ever get busted by the errant wind ?
Great buck, great story and great TG contributing and sponsor member.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Barry for the pics and story. Congrats on a very nice Buck.
Great buck, great story.....awesome pix...Thanks and congrats! Hopefully I too can christen my TT this month....Ryan
Sweet Ray: Thanks for the 2x4 thought but I could care less about getting over the hump to make B&C minimums. Ha. I go by eye appeal and try to refer to "measurements" not "score". I guess another way to say it is measurements tell me the class of the buck, whereas score relates to the rank and I could care less where a buck ranks. But that's just me and I don't hold it against others at all. Stay tuned buddy. bw
Awesome buck, Barry!!!!!!!
congrats Barry! This will give me somthing to dream about on my way to kansas next week. I think that is the largest 8 point I have ever seen!
" Gosh, a cull? One more year and he would've been a decent buck. Just sayin'
Great Buck Barry, Congrats!!
 WOW !!! Great Buck !!! :notworthy:
Bill
WOW! Way to go Barry!
Man - nice one. Congrats!
Barry, I hope you can get the spider off your camera lens and get back in the woods and film more thrills to share. Ha!
Me too Mike. For all of you wondering what he's talking about, a couple weeks ago I had a little tiny spider somehow crawl INSIDE my camcorder then died right in the middle of my lens. Apparently he's stuck in a small death web or something. I tried to blow him out with pressurized air to no avail, shook the camera, etc. When I have the camera on wide angle to what they call "normal eye" there's a big brown piece of cow dung right in the middle of the picture. But when I zoom it in the telephoto over powers him and makes it go away. Not a good time to send off my camera for cleaning so I've just been zooming everything in and hoping for the best. Some people like the real close-up footage but I really prefer the normal eye so you can see the surroundings and get the whole picture. BW
That would be a buck of a life time for me.
Congrats Barry.
I really like to read your post Barry,I am always amazed how well you know those WTs.
UB- that was a 'tongue in cheek' suggestion- I know you well enough to know you don't care!
Last time we were with each other I heard you describe an animal as 'medium, medium rare' I knew what kind of fella I was dealing with!!!!!
All I can say is..........WOW! :scared:  :goldtooth: And a big CONGRATS to ya Mr. Wensel.
Very funny with the ibuprofen comment, I just took mine and I don't have any deer to drag.
Congrats.
Another great buck from Barry. Congrats. :clapper:
You know guys, Barry sends me a daily report on what he's seen, what's happening, new stands, etc. I alwyas give him a bad time about passing up 150" bucks. He does that ALOT. But it seems he always comes home with one he's tickled with.
There's a lesson there about perserverance and sticking with your goals for all of us.
I'm proud to say he's one of my bestest buds of all time.
UB,
Congrads again and Thanks for the blow by blow of the hunt !!
Great job sir....I have alot to learn. :clapper: :archer2:

And that statement right there is why these brothers get to pose with deer like that...
All the "if only" in the world doesn't change that one sentence..."taken a lot of sacrifice in more ways than one..."
And that also is why I'll never, except for totally outhouse luck, ever, ever see let alone shoot such a deer or anything even close.
Cudos to you for the endless learning, years of hard work...and SACRIFICE to make such encounters reality!
Thank you for sharing, Unk! :)
Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

Got that one memorized...
And, although I'm never met Barry, he seems to be one heck of a nice guy.
A sincere and hearty congratulations!
Fantastic buck UB. Too bad you couldn't get Vargo to help you out. I hear he's been working out.... Hope to run into you guys next year hunting with John. Have a great late season. Jeff
Oh Buddy, He is a dandy!!! Congrats!
Congrats on an amazing buck. Really enjoyed the pics and story.
What a great story! Thanks for sharing us with us. It takes a heck of a will to pass on those 4 1/2 year old deer, but look at the reward. What a beast of a deer!!!
Congratulations on a fine buck. I am with you 100 percent on the "score" issue. An eight like the one you took is rare indeed, though. Nice job and thanks for the story.
Great deer ,great story! Its fellas like you and your brother that has kept the spark in so many of us burning for so long.Your contributions to this great sport of ours is priceless.Thank you.
Congratulations Barry. Did you weigh him?
Thanks for sharring, beautiful buck!
Great deer, great story. Not as big as "Biggie's" moose, but almost. Congrats and thanks for sharing. :notworthy:

Do you mean "rappel?" Knowing you guys, it could be "repel." ;)
Hell of a deer, UB! Congrats!
Great story. The next time you need help dragging out a deer, call me, I could be there in a couple of hours. I would leave my plate of hot food sitting there at the supper table to get a chance to witness up close a buck like that one!
Great buck! Thanks for sharing. Can't wait for the new video.
ONLY A 8 POINTER.WHATA LOSER!!!!!!
Sorry Barry,couldn't resist
Congrats on a great deer
congrats UB! Any footage of Gene rappelling ? :biglaugh:
Just an awesome buck! :notworthy:
Oh, and the "Hollyfield" deer with a missing chunk of ear
Great story Barry, I hope Daryl is okay from his fall.
Great buck Barry thoughs dont come around every day.
Great story Barry and Steve O...Awesome Hawg of a Buck!!
One of these days maybe the Good Lord will see fit to send one of those my way......so I can send a razor tipped cedar shaft sailing over his back while I scream..........
"Get on outa here and don't you come back...ya hear!" :goldtooth:
Great job Barry. What I don't know is whether he is a bruiser, pig, hog, or giant? :) Congrats!
Heck... last I heard he was a toad. Ha. BW
You boys are funny. That is just one big deer all the way around. I mean pig.LOL
Gheesh and UB once rode in my truck :) Congrats on just getting to see a buck of that caliber is a lifetime treat. Taking him in the zone is like winning the super bowl .
Jack
I think I'll start wearing my hats sideways so I can get bucks like that to come my way and when they look at me, they'll think I'm looking the other way! ;) Ain't that how it works, Barry?
...yup that Uncle B...he's my hero! Way to go! Love ya Uncle B!!!!
Pete
Great story and pics. BW, it looks as though Hurley has a hole in side (1st pic) and isn't getting much respect, he probably is over the hill, are you sure you want to shoot him this year? BB
Hey Barry,
Awsome buck! Do you shoot off the shelf or a raised bear type rest like Paul Schafer? and are those three fletch or 4 vanes or feathers? Ive always wondered about your set up.....Great buck Barry!I know the bow your shooting is a Talltines bow.... Pretty bow and it has now been broke in huh...
what a buck.good job buddy,steve
Congrats Uncle Barry on a great buck!!!
Ya, what a deer! Thanks so much for the great story. My heart starts beating hard just thinking about seeing a deer like that... wow!
That is a rare eight pointer indeed! All respect and honor to a deer that put his all into only eight points. A 170" eight pointer is got to be almost as rare as a big non typical. They just don't come along very often. Congrats on a great eight pointer, Barry.
Hog/Toad whatever...Great Buck UB!! Now I'm excited as I finally get to hunt Iowa next week with Tom Phillips. Three year wait is tough when seeing pictures of Wensel bucks each year...Doc
Way to go Barry, great buck.
Barry, you ARE the man. Great buck. Thanks for posting so we can all enjoy.
Thanks to SteveO as well, of maybe this buck would have forever been a rumor. Thanks SteveO!!

:archer2:
Great Buck! Nice Job Barry. Good story too.
Congrats Barry, to one of the true "good guys' of our sport. I just returned from a week away chasing whitetails elsewhere, only to find this. I have some catching up to do! Great story, as always.
I want one of those
I was searching for different Tall Tines and popped this up. Not an old old post, but I love that bow! Nice deer too. ;) Great pics on page 3.
Looks like an elk in disguise.(LOL).
