Title: Indiana January Bunny Romp
Post by: Billy on November 02, 2008, 06:35:00 PM
I mentioned something along the lines of a bunny hunt and had a few positive responses.
Anyboby wanna chime in on places or other thoughts?
I'm aiming to be home around the third weekend in January. Have a bit of flex in that though.
I'll be reading and watching this ...

Someone said the third weekend was good for them, that weekend is good for me and nobody else had a preference. Why don't we make it the 16th through the 18th?

Southern Indiana sounds good. It's pretty. There are some nice places to stay. Madison is nearby with hotels and all. The 300 acres sounds nice too.

Well John if you don't have any down there we should do some scoutting. I usually see a few when ever I am out but I don't know that we have a bunch. I can walk a bit at the closet reservoir and see how many I kick up. I live in Grant Co. and the Mississinewa area is where I will scout.

Sounding like we need to pick a central spot and go from there.
January may be a bit cold for tents...Seymour is close, Scottsburg has 'Inns'...
What about State Park cabins?? Should be cheap split several ways and give us a gathering spot.
Then, we could go in several different groups and see what the stories are at the evening campfire.

Other than Patoka Lake, are there cabins close by to any of the parks.
Patoka has huge amounts of land to hunt.
We could spread out pretty well.
I'm throwing stuff into the breeze...

You know, even if we don't end up seeing alot of rabbits, it will be a fun time I'm sure. I don't care where we go just so we go. North, south, or west. (I'm already pretty much east).

Looks like it will work for me. I'd probably go anywhere but extreme SW or NW, just too far to drive from Pittsburgh for a weekend. I'll likely drag the boys out of school for a day as well, so there'd be 3 of us. Winter camping is cool so accomodations aren't important to us.....although I wouldn't turn a cabin down!

I should be back up there soon. I'll be working around Terre Haute, Brazil and Milford, IL.

I'd like to meet you guys. I'd be shooting a recurve also.

How far away is the place you are thinking about hunting from where I'll be at?

That's right the season started didn't it?! I may have to get out for a while before my deer hunt tonight.

I know we have about a month and a half before the hunt date. But on the other hand, we only have a month and a half until the hunt date!
Somebody make a motion on a hunt site. Then we will need a second. Then we can vote.  :campfire:

Mike, when we figure out where we will certain let you know.

Terre Haute is central but extreme west if I remember correctly. Scott Co. has been suggested. That is not as far south as you can go and not as far east as you can go. So maybe 2-2 1/2 hrs. from you? It is about a 4 hr. drive for me. If I would take I-69 it would be a bit quicker.

atterbury wma has lots of open fields might even kick up a pheasant or two left over from the put and take hunts. Boyscouts have a nice cabin that could be rented from johnson county park if the scouts aren't using it that weekend. It's about as centrally located as I can think of

OK, how's this...?
Nighthawk - would you check the boy scout cabin?
b.glass - will you check Mississinewa cabin?
Steve - will you check on the cabins close to you?

Could someone chime in on winter camping in a "summer" tent. I'm thinking a ground pad and a fire pit are good must haves.

chessie - you are looking at roughly 450 to 500 miles one way supposing you came acrossed the pike/I70 to I71 and US50 into southern Indiana and about the same if we go with a northern destination.

.... it will fun, rabbit stew or not ...

Winter camping = the same as summer camping only colder.  May I recommend a sleeping bag and an air mattress.  Here's a nice way to do it  (http://residents.bowhunting.net/sticknstring/06elkhunt70.jpg) I really like the tarp and a good bag.  A mylar blanket helps if it gets sub 20 degrees.

I figure it will be Mon. before I can find out anything. But I will let you know. I do know that they are at Francis Slocum State Park and that they can sleep up to 6. Outhouse toilets, no running water but they do have electricity.
And there are 8 or ten of them. Nice shower facilities in the campground IF they are open.
I doubt it that time of year.

FYI... I cant remember if it was mention(and I'm too lazy to look).. there's a good size campground right there in Atterbury, plenty of ponds to fish/ice fish, archery range, brand new (NICE) firearms range and plenty of military tanks, trucks etc on display, POW chapel- it was used as a pow camp in the 40's.

Also an outlet mall about 6 mile down the road, restaraunts etc.

I'm liking Atterbury more all the time. If NightHawk has an even moderately favorable report I saw we make it Atterbury.
I will check on a reply about Farmland though.

called the dnr at atterbury today. (1-812-526-2051)The guy on the phone told me that the season has been a little better than in the past. Atterbury does get alot of pressure early during the seasons, as long as it isn't to cold. I have bowhunted there for deer and haven't seen another person all day, some days seems like I can't get away from folks. Just depends

UNLESS someone has an arguement...
Jan 16-18,is the date ;Camp Atterbury, is the location?
Like Steve suggested, we can split off and hunt different areas. Or, we could 'crash' the brush as a group.
Nighthawk can we ask you to continue to spearhead the set up for the cabin?

We can work the rest out as we go...

My thoughts are ;
Ethan and I will leave Kokomo Friday after school. Could make Atterbury about 5ish? Hang out and/or hunt that evening..hunt Saturday morning...yak/lunch/bows...hunt...campfire...
hunt Sunday morning...
Without a camp to set up or breakdown, should leave some extra flingin' time.

Keep the ideas flowing, this is sounding good!!

Covey,
Camp Atterbury
Jan. 16th - 18th
Boyscout cabin is held for us. Some have already spoken for $20 towards the cabin. NightHawk will let us know how much the cabin will be all totaled. I might be interested in handling the payment to rent the cabin when I know how much it will be. There are also hotels nearby. Can someone tell us what the hotels are and what town they are in? I think there is also camping available.

I'm back with a new monitor. We will need the cabin for two nights. So $180.00 will cover it. So $20 for two people will be more than enough. Maybe we can get some food with what's left over. How does that sound to y'all? I guess I can handle collecting the money and sending it to the campground if that's ok with everybody. Maybe we should have some volunteers bring some food also. We should start a list.

there is a place in taylorsville that sells fish, the kind that volunteer fire departments use for thier fish frys. Might be mighty tasty saturday evening

Big ol fish fry and a couple big pots of beans and corn bread, some onions in the beans ohhhhh babyyyyyy

Also there is a restaurant in Nineveh called the Williamsburg Inn,  saturdays they have  cowboy prime rib, last time I ate there, I cut the prime rib with my fork, you also get one of those texas size, baked potatos with sea salt, butter, sour cream and corn bread. Washed down with sweet tea

If we go the fish route it does have to be fried. It comes frozen. I think the place is called 7-k farms.

I vote for the beans as they would be easier to fix and can feed a crowd resonably, plus they will keep you warm at night   :scared:    :scared:    :bigsmyl:

uhh, you planning to sleep outside are ya??...LOL

I like the beans or even chili idea...cornbread works either way!!
A few crockpots and either, or, can be had. Jiffy cornbread would make it simple or, does Wally world have it ready-to-eat?
Simple to set up and walk away from that way.
Be off-line for a few days.

I'd just get the cabin for Saturday night.  You're closing in on $300 and if my experience serves as an indicator, fewer than half of those who are saying they will be there now will actually be able to make it.  No fault of their own, life just happens.  Like I said earlier, I'm in for $20 one way or another but I won't be sleeping in the cabin on Saturday night just because of my own "life happens" stuff  :)

I'd do a stew or some other simple thing.  Frying a bunch of fish is a pain.  Let's hunt, not cook.

I will definitely keep everyone updated on how many are planning to be in the cabin. I will go by checks sent to me if you would include a note saying how many will be in your group. Even those not sleeping there could contribute some $ because we will be using it for meals, warmth, etc.

I like nutters too.  Go down to walmart and get some 3/8" dowels.  Put a nock and a couple feathers on one end.  Stick a heavy nut on the other end and you are set.  Less than a buck.  You don't care if you lose them and they won't hurt the dogs.  It is a slight miracle if I hit a running bunny any way.

I have a bunch of steel glue on blunts in several sizes.  I will bring them if anyone needs some.  I mainly have 145 and 160 grain in both 11/32 and 23/64.

If anyone needs a few just email me and let me know where you are staying and I will get them to you.   I only live about 5 miles from the hunt site.

For the folks looking for a room there are several motels in Taylorsville.   It is at the crossroads of Interstate 65 and US 31.

There are some goods eats in that area.  Myu favorite is Montana Mikes Steak House.    If the non-hunting wives come there is a big outlet mall in that area.

Sounds like fun,  we can not wait.

If anyone is interested I might be able to set up a racoon hunt on one of the nights.

Yes on the coon hunt.  Friday night would be better for me but we could do Saturday too.  My son is dying to do that ever since seeing "Where the Red Fern Grows".

I'll be shooting my ambush bow selfbow.  My brother will probably come and shoot my Ancient Spirits recurve.

Coon hunt? Sounds good!

We have about 6 weeks until the hunt date. I have only one reservation so far. When we get close to the amount needed, ($190.00), I will send it in. I plan to put something towards the price of the cabin. Someone thought a pass of the hat on Sat. would work. Anything above and beyond what is needed for the hunt could go to St. Judes. Maybe we could have a raffle for the $ needed.

What do you all think?

OK. But what does that have to do with dancing?

I invisioned one of you guys in a flimsy costume dancing in the snow like those guys that jump into icy water on Jan. 1st!

Just came back from a short bunny/squirrel hunt. Sighted 3 bunnies, multiple bushy tails (w two missed shots, close but no cigar) and a whitetail doe.

OK so I'm working in Hoopeston, IL. right and I get out pretty early(just after day break)and I'm out till dark every night. Since these last two snow falls I've noticed there are bunny tracks every where!
I work in alleys mostly and along the highways.
I'm seeing tracks and lots of them except I have yet to see a rabbit? Now where I'm from if there are rabbits around you will see them early in the morning and late evening. So what gives? Are Illinois bunnys nocturnal?

Granted I'm not out tromping the brush but you would think you would see some around with all the tracks I'm seeing every where. None dead on the hwy,and never seen one cross the hwy either. Last couple of mornings & nights I've really been watching for them too, even went back to some areas that looked like a freeway with tracks...no bunnys.

Something else I can offer.   If someone has never ran a trap line they can tag along with me.   I have a few traps set in the area.    I trap for racoon, coyote, muskrat.   But sometimes catch squirrels, rabbits skunks and so forth.    It might be interesting for someone that has never experienced it.

Does the cabin have any tables in it ?
I was thinking (dangerous)...crockpots and what not in a general- grab and growl line. Might leave more room inside for the li..ehum, story tellin's.

I don't know what is in the cabin but Nighhawk might. I've been wanting to go down and check it out but I've been pretty busy.

Also while we're on the subject of the cabin, I only have $50.00 towards the cabin. If anyone else knows they are wanting to sleep there and want to sent something in advance you can send it to me at: Bona Glass
            1979 S. 900 E.
            Marion, IN 46953

We need $140.00 more. Someone has given $20.00 to cover themselves and a child or two. Someone else sent $20.00 for himself. So there is no set rule, more like a donation. I've thrown a $10.00 in the pot even though I'm not planning to sleep there. I'll be using it to get warm, eat, li...tell stories.

So if you want to be sure of a spot in the cabin to sleep send me a few bucks and I'll put your name down.

boyscout cabin is at the west end of the camp grounds past the park office. The check in thing is very simple. At the dnr building they have a sign in book and cards. You sign the book ,pick up a card. When your done hunting you place the card in one of the boxes located on the side of the road. It's an honor system. It helps the biologists keep track of how many of what specis has been harvested.

Billy...any of the large fields should be decent. I would think about area 11 and 13,14

For those that don't know the history. Atterbury was an internment camp for german and italian pows in WW11. You can still see the pillboxes along the creek and the chapel that the pows built and hand painted the art inside. Don't forget to bring your camera

Thats my poor man's blunt (my version of the nutter) It's a 2 1/2 inch long 8/32 bolt. A 10/32 wingnut. A 8/32 nut and an alluminum insert. (the ones that come with carbon shafts). slap them together and it's the perfect bunny thumper that weigh just under 135 grains!

Good news!! I just came back from a run down to the campgrounds. I talked to the grounds people and it will only be $50.00 for the entire Sat./Sat. night and Sun!

We have more money than needed and I will reimburse those who have given $20.00 at least $10.00.

I will bring fix'ns for a pancake and sausage breakfast Sunday morning. And I will bring a crockpot of deer stew for Sat.

My son and I will come and stay in the cabin. My daughter might come too.

Well Joe, there was a gate up at the entrance to the cabin so I didn't take the time to go on back. But the pictures you posted looked great!

I think it will be fine!

I think we can stir up some bunnies in there.  ;)

Oh ya, somebody needs to pick up the keys to the gate and the cabin on Fri. Can someone speak up for that job?

Adeeden, those are fantastic looking bunny arrows! It will be great to see those fly!

Hey Billy, I don't know yet or even if they would be ready on time. The cost for 10 hats to be made would be at least $15.50 each because of the "digitizing" fee of $50.00 and the cost of embroidering of at least $6.50 a piece. The hats I've picked up where $4.00 each.

That seems a little steep to me but of course the more that is made the cheaper each would be to a point.

I will put up a picture of the rough draft for the patch. It is also on the "Roll Call" thread.

I've changed my mind and will bring sloppy joes instead of stew, buns included.

Don't forget to bring your favorite drink (short of booze I hope).

Yeah no bunnies but where else could you find a parking lot with a semi, a boom truck, pick up trucks, an SUV a couple cars, some beagles and bows and arrows everywhere! And if the vehicles sound silly you should have seen the folks with bows!

It was great meeting with everyone though!

It was fun. First event of this kind that I've been to and looking forward to next year and hope to make some of the other traditional shoots in the area.

After leaving I drove around Atterbury a bit and found what I think would be some really good bunny hunting areas. The eastern part of area D and some of area 12 looked really good.

These are a couple pictures from before that hunt. If some poor bunny would have been there instead of the ball he would have been scared to death with all that timber headed his way.

Hope to see some more pictures.

Hey ya'll...what A blast !!!

AS you can see there was a bit of shootin', yes bow and arrow shooting TOO !!

Not sure what time we all cleared out and headed for the brush but, it was like a mass explosion of people, dogs and bows.
High hopes had each of moving along at a fun loving pace.
The group I was with bumped a bunny within 5 minutes of the cabin. We popped brush and turn over leaves, but alas...no cotton tail.
We moved on; Bona and Greg Went left. Steve,Calvin and Ethan went right. John and I went brush stumbling.
We crossed paths and weaved and wandered around the area. We shot arrows acrossed the ice. We shot at Itty bitty cedars. We shot at fence posts. We even shot at the sky.
John, Calvin Steve and I were treated to a pair of does and a buck in mid-speed pursuit.
We went in had some chow and conversation.
Around 5, Bona,Greg and I went out for another try. We popped one bunny out of the weeds ...I missed   :smileystooges:   But at least I had a chance
This morning; we played P-I-G....
Ethan walked away with a Voodoo 1 off armguard.
Brianne left with a 'new to her' bow and a half dozen arrows (courtesy of Hawksnest).
I won't be far off by saying, Everyone had at least a little fun.
I came away with some new friends, some renewed friendships and a lot of anticipation for the next Indiana Bunny Romp!!

As for remembering faces; I can't either,so..

I am 2d from the left, Ethan is 3d and that guy in the back with the black sock hat, 8th from the left; that's my buddy Calvin. Calvin is from Florence,SC and he was driving the big Peterbilt parked at the cabin.
He wanted me to say Thanks, to all who were there and made him feel Welcome and amongst friends!

Back on the road, be in touch in a few days. Stay warm and safe. Thanks again for being who Tradgang has become.

We really had a great time.  Though we saw few rabbits I had fun just shooting at hedgeapples. I'm first on the left in the front row. And my father is third in the back row with a black tobogan on. Thanks everyone that was able to come to the hunt! It's one thing to help put together such an event but it's another thing to respond to the invitation. We are all sooo busy! Too busy sometimes.

We didn't lack for targets to shoot at. Osage and hedge apples were EVERYWHERE! I think we can coin the phrase "apple shooting" in that area instead of "stump shooting".

We already have the funds to rent the same place next year. I suppose there is always room for improvement but I honestly can't think of anything I would change about this hunt. Maybe more organization on the eats. If it weren't for Maries wonderful chili, we would have starved! Well, maybe not STARVED. Billy and Marie pretty much fed us all...well! Thanks Marie!!!

I had a blast and Greg genuinely had fun too. Thanks for making a non-shooter feel welcome.

I would absolutely LOVE a weekend turkey hunt!

I forgot my camera too!

I would be available to chase turkeys any weekend!

I have never hunted them on public land but have chased them quite a bit on private land! On private land I actually like the last part of the season it seems the toms commit easyier then.

Been off line for a bit.

John wrote: "Travis, Billy, Ethan, Mike, Travis' Dad, Brianne, Joe, Calvin, ?, Bob(?), Steve, John, Dennis, Dave, Greg, Bona"

I'm the Bob(?).

If I'm still in the area I'll be back next year. Maybe talk my wife into joining.  She doesn't shoot but makes a mean pot of stew.

I'll keep a look out for the post on the turkey shoot and try to make it.
