Barry called me last night with good news from "Pig-Gig" #1 at the Vinson Ranch. The guys in camp have taken 20 hogs the first two days! He said that many, if not most, were shot on the ground by spot and stalk. Needless to say he was really pumped! I can't wait to head down there on the 16th.
Awww....somebody's tellin a fib, he just told me 15 or 16 :-)
He said it was 19 degrees this morning!!
Where is this all happening?
He probably gave you a low number just to make you feel bad Biggie:^) He did tell me 20 but Uncle Barry's memory could be slipping - old age and all, HA! Barry said the cold temps and wild wings just about drove him out of his tree, which I couldn't fathom since he left an Iowa winter for the "warm" south:^) Musta been wearing his Sumo suit again!
The ranch is northeast of Albany TX.
Good deal...I already have an "in" for next year!
I leave on Fri. at noon for week 2. This is my first javilina/hog hunt. Really hopeing to get a crack at a javilina. will update you when i get back.
doug77
Doug, you're hunting the Chapparosa 30 miles below Uvalde and approx. 9 west of La Pryor. Access is good throw a series of gates from the main highway. I took both my javies there while walking the dirt/sand roads("scenderos")looking for game. If you're lucky you may be able to ease over a hump in the road and spot groups feeding your way. With the wind right you can back off the road 10-15 yards and wait for them to pass. If they see you move they usually do one of three things; run like heck, bristle their backsides and pop their teeth, or put their heads back down to continue feeding. I missed one one day but was able to call him back out into the open with a pig distress call. The hide's still in my freezer!
I have a bunch of these mounted and they're cool looking critters..they LOOK meaner than they really are but they're made for bowhunters that's for sure!
the truck is all packed and rerady to go, only 19 more hours and i will be on the road hopefuly to get a chance at a javilina or two. the wife thinks i brought to much stuff with. any more advice on hunting the javilina's.
doug77
Oh yeah, one more piece of advice; once you get one down keep your hands, clothes, etc. OFF the scent gland found on their rump!!!!
I've had good success using a varmint call (distressed rabbit) on the little devils. Keep one in your pocket. If they are in sight and perhaps moving away, give it a try. They are curious and very protective of their young. Have fun and good luck.
HHey! How about some pics?!

I took this one on the 1st hunt, before it was named the Pig-Gig. We (with the Wensels) were scouting for some good ranches.
Just got back from hunt #1 last nite, ran out of room to bring hogs home, all in all I think the final count was about 25 hogs or so. I'm headed to church now but will try and load some pictures this afternoon. This was my third pig-gig and best so far.
here are a couple of pictures, I am no typist so I won't go into some long story, suffice it to say we had a great time came home with plenty of pork and will be back ! OK hear you go. spent most of the day monday driving around lost did find a good spot for hogs ( not really what i came to hunt) so i corned a spot on the road about 1 hour berore dark about 30 hogs were on the road feeding the only ones that came by were about a 150 pound sow with 9 piglets that were the size of a football. mon. nite i was talking to the ranch manger about javies and he was kind enough to send us in the right direction. Tue finlly found some javies had 4 stalks and 3 misses. lots fo brush the try to get a arrow through and finlly on the 5th. stalk got my first ever javie. shot him at abour 13 yds. away quarting slightly towards me right in the front shoulder. on the way back to camp late in the day i also got lucky and got a nice rattle snake on the road. i have him in the freezer also. Wed. took the hide to town to a freezer and didnt get to hunt much.the sopt ware i shot my first javie i let a guy form alabama hunt becaust he had his 15 year old grandson with and he killed one one wed. Thur afrernoon got into some more javies and after 3 stalks i finlly conected agian with perftic quarting away shot at about 15 yards. i went down really hopeing to get 1 javilna and got lucky and got 2. not for sure but i think their were 5 javies and 4 hogs taken this week. this was my first Texas hunt and the javies and hogs are not as dumb as some people led my to beleive. Had a great hunt and made some new. friends. doug77
Way to go Doug, glad you scored on the javies...Twice!

ya got like that Sitka gear camo , thats cool stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks like a great time for everyone there. Something tells me that sharing a camp with the Wensel's would be quite entertaining.
John, is that your new A & H bow that you broke in? Good shootin!
Thanks for sharing! That is wonderful country, with good hogs too. Well done!
Ok, I have had enough, I talked to my dad and uncle, we are gonna book 3 spots next year. Look out little piggies!
Hi Kevin...yes that was my new ACS bow purchased at the K'zoo traditional show one week before. Three yards on the ground is perfect shooting distance for me. This pig was taken stalking through the brush after seeing a large herd nibbling on corn we left along the road to draw them out. The Sitka gear mothwing camo was perfect color for blending in with the surroundings. Most of the conventional camo patterns that we saw guys wearing was too dark.
Congrats John on your pigs. Did you have the opportunity to shoot the ACS out of the DB blind? How did the Sitka gear hold up to the thorns down there? Mike
Hey John.... Did you bring it in with Barry's Oink-Wheeze call. 3 Yards, were you holding it by the ear when you shot it..... :biglaugh: Jeff
guy's i have a nice pic of my javie but don't know enough to post one. will send one to some one through e-mail if they want to post it
doug77
Mike, the terrain was open enough to pick your way through it without getting into very many thorns so I really did not test the Sitka gear against thorns. Unless they have a new line made of latigo leather I don't think you would get much protection...although you may be popular in some bars on the west coast. I would advise anyone hunting down there to carry tweezers with you at all times. I never got any cactus spines but lots of these little thorns that are very small and thinner than hair off the Wensel's head. Pair of leather gloves is also good for clipping brush and building ground blinds. Lots of little, prickly stuff on a lot of the vegetation. Never did try shooting my new ACS out of a ground blind. Being new to shooting lefty I find putting a lot of cant on the bow to feel awkward and difficult to pull.
Here is Doug's Javelina:

Got a shot inside there showing the choppers???
Who's going next week to the pig gig besides me? I'm flying in from Cali on Sunday.

Is Gary L. back yet?
Yep, I crawled back to KY late last night Mike . . . had lots of action in TX. I
I'll be back in here after I get some rest and wash all the red TX mud off my rig! We're slicing the tenderloin and packaging sausage in the morning.
still waiting to hear about week 3.
doug77
Gary are you their, we are waiting.
doug77
Good numbers of hogs taken during week three, all sizes shapes, and colors. I know the total was in double digits. I tent camped in a spot away from the meat pole so really didn't see everything that came in and forgot to ask the bros. when I left. Everyone in my group had shots on the ground, tons of action! One young guy tooked a whopper; his first bowkill ever.
When all of the pics roll in I will post them online and put a link up here for ya. I had more fun this year than the last two even though I stacked more meat in year's past (4 javies in two years)on the Chaparossa and Uno Mas ranches. I didn't solo hunt at all this time, instead, I stuck to my 13 yr. old every day. He shot 2 inches under a big sow's heart one day and stalked within 15 yards of a big black boar another time. I wore a Rancho Safari "Shaggie" ghillie suit and had my son walking behind me on several stalks. The hogs never knew we were there! My son-in-law took a young boar, his first ever.
thanks for the update Gary. Sounds like everyone had a good time, can't wait till next year.
doug77
any more updates from week #4? or any week ! let's see some more pics.
Swirling winds and inexperience with hogs cost me several opportunities in week 4. Some in camp took pigs. I had to leave a day and a half early so don't know what happened those last two evenings, but the guys were definitely dialing in on the hogs habits. They were seeing some bigguns!
I am working on a Pig Gig 2008 page for brothersofthebow.com. It will be up later today (3-6). Make sure you take a look at Uncle Barry's HOUSE OF HORRORS!!!
Here ya go: http://www.brothersofthebow.com/html/texas08.html
Just for the record, that's not Photoshop. Barry came up with the makeup that haunted many a camp!!

100? HA! Uncle Barry's been working out!
