Some of you may remember a thread I posted way back when about the woes of my weekend gar hunting adventure. (it was yesterday)
Not to be put off by misfortune and my own ineptitude, I once more loaded my bowfishing rig into the black Toyota and headed down to the creek. (that's "crik" for you westerners)
I didn't expect the action to be as hot as it had been yesterday... and it wasn't. But it twarnt bad.
Without any extra trips to the house for gear, no thundering rust buckets or free falling youngsters to interupt my quest I managed to land 19 short nose gar.

I have to admit I started out slow, but soon snapped right into the groove. Pure instinctive shooting joy.

I had one string where I made 8 consecutive hits.
Get this! Twelve feet up on a bridge, average shot was 10 yards out... sound like a familiar scenario? Like I said, "anybody can hit a deer". :D
Good going Charlie! That looks like fun. Thats the second time today I've seen a fish line spool like yours. Where can I get one of those? My plastic job is a nightmare. That lone looks like the line on it will slip right off with very little friction. Thanks, Randy.
Way to go Charlie and good shooting!
DANG...THEMS SMALL TARGET'S ..THAT IS GREAT SHOOTING ... THATS A VERY VERY NARROW TARGET ..
I BET YOUR HARD ON THE DEER ... WHAT GREAT TREE STAND PRACTICE ... :notworthy: :notworthy:
Nice job Charlie, looks like you wore them Gar out.
Now, are ya gonna Eat 'Em? Or just Skin 'em? Good Shooting Charlie!! :archer:
Excellent Charlie! That's some real fine shooting....congrats! :bigsmyl:
Randy... I'm not sure, but I think that's a Mohawk Shoot Thru reel. It's very old, but I've seen a pic of one on here recently.
A buddy of mine died a few years ago and left me his gear... the reel was just part of it.
Dano... missed a lot more than I hit, but figurin 1 hit for every three shots (if that good) it adds up to 60 shots in a two hour period. Not bad action.
Shakes... some people eat them, but I'm not one of them. I fed them to the turtles.
Nice!

WOW Charlie, Looks like you were whoopin em. Great shooting and congrats. :bigsmyl:
Charlie, Glad you got some revenge on those hammer handles. Great shooting; looks like you broke a sweat out there too.
Denny... I heard a guy call them "Billy Gar" not sure where that comes from but I've heard them called some VERY creative names by pole and line fishermen. :D Hammer handles is a good one for sure.
Randy... I brought a thread to the top for you. Posted by Onfirecharlie. He's got a reel that looks just like mine... and yes, it does shoot with very little drag.
 Hammer time Charlie!!!
Way to go Bud  When ya headed south???
Looks like fun, great shootin. :notworthy:
Wished I had a crik with some a those in it.
Curt... I'm out the door Wednesday morning early. Can't wait!
:campfire:
Robin... Be careful what you wish for. :D
And all of that without a boat!
The shoot thru works really well for me too Charlie. The only place I can find another one is at Sully's bowfishing. Simple and deadly. Great shootin Mr. Lamb!
Charlie
Nice Shooting Charlie! Ya' got redemption on those prehistoric monsters
Nice...i always pictured gar as much larger on average- is that not so. I was figuring adults to be 20+lbs. Obviosuly I've not seen one in person.
Glad to see ya settled in and got down to " GETTING IT DONE" :scared: :knothead:
Quote"anybody can hit a deer".
Im sure glad you now lease property in Texas. Deer season is just around the corner and I saved this quote along with pics of all those tiny sewer bass. Good shootin by the way! Good thing those fish don't string jump. They'd be a reeeealy tough target. Coingrats! CK
Roger... gar can be small or big depending on the species. The ones in the picture are short nosed gar which seldom exceed 2 feet in length. Very common in the backwaters and creeks off of the Mississippi river.
Matter of fact they can be very small... like this one that my son shot a few years back.

This little guy may actually be a spotted gar which don't get any bigger than the short nose variety.
Longnose gar get much bigger. This is one I shot a few years back. It's about as big as they get.

WOW!
The absolute king of the Gar family is the Alligator gar that grows to weights in excess of 300 pounds, but I don't have a pic of one of those. They've mostly disappeared from the waters of this state.
I'll be traveling to south Texas this summer on a quest for one of the real big ones with buddies Curtis Kellar and Jason Wesbrock.
Dang, Charlie when ur hot ur hot.,..great shooting , that looks like its a hoot!!! marco#78
Here is an average, small, adolescent alligator gar.
This pic represents three species of gar. All the way to the left is a longnose gar, the same as the one Charlie is holding in his "Hollywood" pic. The largest fish in front, turned sideways is a baby alligator gar(best eating species). All others are the tiny spotted/shortnose gar. Im not sure of the difference between the spotted and shortnose gar. I think they may be the same species. I could be wrong but I know the spots light up in the boat lights at night. There's no mistaking which species they are when they rise.

Watch your step! The deck get's a little slick!!! CK
So, can you use the Gar Skins like you use Carp Skins? That Alligator Gar is BIG Honker!!
Niiiiiice shootin their Charlie! Them TX critters are in real trouble this weekend with you all warmed up on the gar....
Those are some HUGE frogs...... We used to have a bunch like that around these parts, seems they are slowly becoming harder and harder to find...
