Well Charlie Lamb and Vance "Iron Bull" Brewer were running late. It was already after 3PM and they were still an hour or so out, so Chad and I headed to the farm without them. I would be hunting a stand just inside the woodsline at the end of a long field, near a pond. Evidence of a recent scrape was to my left. A ridge the deer bedded on beyond that. Chad would be hunting another stand up around the corner of the field about 500 yards from me.
Good golly but the deer were active tonight. I saw 5 differerent bucks including a spike, a couple of smaller 8's, a medium 8, and a bigger buck I couldn't judge becasue of brush and distance...oh...and a few does. Had a yearling at 10 yards broadside at one point, but that was the closest deer to me. Saw a flock of turkeys too.
From my stand I could hear Chad grunting and rattling too. He's quite enthusiastic about it.
Right before dark I could hear something big coming my way. Very deliberate, very heavy sounding. I just knew one of the "bruiser bucks" in the area had waited until the last minute and was heading towards the field. The steps got closer and closer. I gripped my bow tighter and then relaxed, my fingers were around the arrow nock and my arm was already raised into position. I had to tell myself to calm down, it was only a deer as my breathing had gotten labored. Suddenly he stepped out. It was that stupid SPIKE again. A 250 pound spike from the way he was walking although he didn't look that big.....
And........

At dark I cliimbed down and headed to meet Chad. As I neared the end of the field he came driving up in his truck. "We dragging?" I said. "Yep" was the reply. I'm so used to hearing NO by this time of the year it took me by suprise. I jumped in the truck and started questioning Chad. Seems after his last rattling session he heard something charging him thru the woods breaking saplings as it came. He saw horn and when it skidded to a stop at 12 yards Chad concentrated on a spot behind the deers shoulder and let a snuffer tipped shaft from his zipper bow loose. The arrow went where directed and the buck tore out of there. Chad thought he heard him crash.
We decided to go see if Charlie and Vance had made it in, figuring they'd like to participate in the blood trailing and dragging (they're big..and could come in handy for dragging!). In the meantime it started drizzling rain.Great!
Soon we were back with flashlights and reinforcements including Wesley, Chads 5 year old son. At the shot site we found blood almost immediately and followed a fairly easy blood trail for about 50 yards and there lay Chads prize.

Way to go Chad! Dang I was hoping for a Hope kill.
After congrats and pics, Chad took the insides and moved them outside, and Vance grabbed a horn and Chad grabbed a horn and it was a short drag to the truck.
Soon we were back at Chads where Chads definitly better half Shannon had prepared a wonderful meal of Pork Chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, macaroni & cheese, green beans and dinner rolls. We ate like kings.

L-R: Ferret, Charlie, Vance, Chad and with back to camera Wesley
Oh Yeah! You sure put a leak in him with that snuffer. Way to start the hunt Chad.
Tomorrow Charlie and Vance get to start chasing those Ohio bucks and Rabbitman Dick Easter is driving in to hunt Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday I believe. I hope to join them for another day or two as well. I have a feeling it's going to be a good week. Will keep you guys updated.
BTW VM..I got to shoot "Hope" while waiting for Charlie and Vance. Nice bow. Loved the slim handle and the woods were beautiful.
Be real sweet if you guys could take one with her while she's there. Some mojo from this crew would surely drive her and the bag's value up for the auction.
Fairly easy blood trail? By the looks of that wound I'm guessing that's an understatement!
Way to go Chad!
Congrats on a nice buck Chad. Looks like a nice meal with great friends as well. Doesn't get much better.
Terry
so does this make chad a full time guide now or does ohio offer another buck tag?
Congrats, and good luck to the others!! I'll be watching this one.
Nice buck Chad. I hope you guys have a great hunt. Shot with Dick yesterday at the club. Have a great time.
Heck yeah, way to go Chad.I'm glad you got em...Congrats......
nice buck--congrats
I knew it was just a matter of time before that boy got'um a good one!! Congrats bud :bigsmyl:
Thanks for the update mickey...looking forward to more
Nice buck, those three blades make a heck of a hole. With that crew I'm sure there's more to come.
My thoughts exactly Curt. Each year I watch a select few guys because I know it's only a short matter of time and they'll have a good one on the ground. I've been waiting on you Chad! Nice one! Keep it up Bud! CK
Way to go Chad! It's nice when they don't go far and you have all that extra help to get him to the truck.
David
Congrats Chad on the deer. Say hi to Dick for me and hope all does just as good as Chad!!!!!!
Joe
Way to go Chad. I've been lookin forward to this thread after following Charlie toward the east.
Some years you don't get to hunt as much as you want to, and this is that year for me. Bein on the Tradgang allows me to "hunt" along with alot of QUALITY folks, and I've come to appreciate that big time.
Thanks for allowin me to tag along once again.
congrats on a beautifull buck, thats got to feel good especiall with a great group of guys. solets here the story from Chad now!
now that is a pretty one.
rusty
Ken, Chad will be out of touch for a few days I think. He does his computerin from work at night.
Kojac..only one buck tag in Ohio although you can get up to 3 does tags in this area and Chads already filled one of those last week. Can't imagine him sitting aaroud thehouse so I imagine he'll be trying for another slick head.

Jeff
Excellant Chad. Another beautiful buck. Sounds like stuff is starting to happen out in the woods. I've got a hunt with friends this coming weekend. Pat
dang that chad can hunt. way to go chad! I would love to see that trophy room.
I would too! How about a few pictures of your trophy room to get us all fired up and ready to hunt.
BTW, nice deer!
Just talked to Chad on the phone. Dick should be there now. Both Charlie and Vance saw bucks this morning. He said Vance had deer within 8-10 feet. Not sure why no one shot. Will find out in a bit. I'm changing clothes and grabbing a bite and headed their way in a couple of mins.
Daniel and I will be in that area this coming weekend, and will try hard to stop by Chad's place and check out the meat pole. Chad killed a real nice buck, again! I'm predicting several more bucks dead by the weekend.
Congrats Chad!!
Hope the weather here holds up for you guys.
Great Job guys!
Bill
GREAT DEER!! Chad; congrats; thanks for a great story and great pictures; it is always good to see the harvest, but really enjoy the "camp" pictures as well; great post :clapper:
Way to go Chad!! Nice lookin buck. Gotta love them snuffers.
Ho Hummm, Chad shoots another big buck :bigsmyl: So what else is new??

Chad, very nice!! Congrats!!! Shawn
Way to go Chad. As always great pics and stories follow Mickey around. Mickey has had had more experience than most with those pictures and they always turn out so well. I once heard he wrote a short course for Japanese Tourism on Photography....................Mac~
"he wrote a short course for Japanese Tourism on Photography" Come on Mac, The rest of the story :bigsmyl:
Chad,Congrats on another big bruiser. You must have the Midas touch. :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
Beautiful buck!
Chad
You are the MAN brother!!!! You about a buck huntin fool fo sho!!!!
I'm on vacation for a week starting Friday. Hope the temps drop a bit and this full moon thing will be gone as well.
well tonight the action was what can I say..differernt from last night. Almost nothing was moving. Dick made it to the treestand Chad had set for him only to find out that someone had stolen it. Charlie hunted the stand I saw 5 bucks out of last night and saw 1 doe. Vance wore his ghillie and hunted off the ground after discovering he didn't like treestands this morning and saw nothing. I hunted on the ground and had 1 doe at 30 yards. Chad went to the only place on the farm that wasn't occupied by one of us and saw 2 bucks. Figures.
Heres the hunting crew for today
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/chadshunt4.jpg)
L-R Vance, Charlie, Chad, Rabbitman, Ferret
Here's Vance and Charlie
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v247/theferret111/chadshunt6.jpg)
BTW Vance and I figured out that his ghillie and my plaid work equally well when there are no deer around
For Vermonster... Here's a pic of Vance and Chad with "Hope"
Last I heard the whole crew was headed for Tumbleweeds rest. in Maysville Kentucky.
Rain is supposed to be coming in tomorrow so not sure how much hunting they are going to get in. I bowed out for tomorrow but Chad is supposed to call me with updates throughout the day..as always when I know...you'll know.
I miss Vance......... :(
Thanks Ferret
Chad,
Congratulations! I know it will be a while before you get a chance to reply but I was wondering if that HUGE hole in that buck was created by your zipper bow? If so I'm even more thrilled with mine now that I see how well yours performed.
Chris
Chris... yes Chad used a Zipper bow, snuffer head, some kind of black carbon shaft.
Welcome VM.
You guys are having to much fun..
Its great.. :campfire:
I've been wondering how Vance was going to get along with a treestand :scared: Whole different concept there isn't it buddy? :p The ghilli seems to be much more your style :bigsmyl:
Vance should wear a Santa suit. All the big ones will think he's recruiting for his sleigh when he slays them. hehe
Congrats. I'll bet he's going to look great on the wall.
Chad,
Nice buck man. Didn't your mother teach you the host is supposed to let the guest shoot those big deer. LOL
Good job!
hey mick, good thing you weren't standing next to charlie :jumper: :jumper: :jumper: ya might need a stump to stand on.
Nice deer Chad!
Kojac..no kidding I felt like a midget next to these guys..course I feel like a midget next to most guys
Jason..Chad said this one isn't big enough for the wall.
It was raining when I got up to go vote this morning. (back already..no lines, I was voter number 9 at our voting place..Dianne was number 8)
Don't forget to DO YOUR DUTY FOLKS! (BTW I voted for the guy Ted Nugent told me to vote for although I was going to anyway, and he's probably going to lose)
Terry, since Vance is so quiet up there, maybe this will make you feel more at home:
So guys, tell me about the food! :D
Hope ya'll are having a good time, it certainly looks like it.
Anxiously awaiting the next installment....
Oh,man...what I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall of that hunting camp... :bigsmyl:
Whip..Vance wasn't at all comfortable hunting from a treestand so he got down and went over and made a little ground blind. Had a 4 point (forky) at about 10 yards at eye level and that was the first whitetail he's ever seen up close. He talked about how beautiful and sleek it was with the pure white belly and throat patch and brown hide as compared to the gray blocky mule deer he's used to hunting.
Now how many did they kill? Heck, there's prolly a pile of them stacked ready for the freezer. :)
I've been doing some ground pounding myself this year, and have had a few close encounters. Sure does add another level of intensity, I'll tell you that!
Those of us who get to hunt whitetails all the time do tend to take them for granted. It's cool when someone can come out and experience them for the first time and see what great animals they are.
Go get 'em Vance!
...and if you shoot one you can look at it in much greater detail! :)
Talked to Chad a couple hours ago and nobody went out this morning due to the rain. However the rain has subsided for now and I imagine they are getting ready to head out (as I am here at home). Chad has 1 doe tag left but has 2 deer in the freezer now. I don't think he's really looking to put another down, but since he's still going to the woods with a bow in hand, well..........
Just got home from my overnight stay at Chad's. Got in yesterday, mid morning, and found the boy's just finishing up lunch. It was great to see Charlie again and to meet Vance for the first time. We spent the next few hours telling lies and shooting Chad's 3D and bag targets. Mickey arrived and he organized a photo session..."The old guys and the youngster." Charlie, Vance, Mickey and I are all about the same age. We all have children approx. Chad's age. We sometimes have to remind him about respecting his elders. Then it was time to head out for the evening hunt... which Mickey reported the detail earlier...very little deer movement and the stolen stand and stick ladder incident. I ended up making a fast ground blind and spent the time until darkness sitting on the ground. Didn't see any deer but the other guys didn't see much either. For whatever reason, the whitetails were just not moving this evening. We returned to the house and saw Mickey off as he headed for home. Chad and his lovely wife Shannon, Charlie, Vance and I all loaded into Chad's car and headed to a Maysville, Ky. steakhouse. JC...I'll let you ask Vance about the food when you talk to him again...sure looked like he was enjoying it. We returned to Ohio and hit the sack in anticipation of morning rolling around real early. We were drinking fresh coffee at 5:45AM and watching a steady rain come down. We discussed going out in the rain but all agreed it was much more comfortable sitting at the kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee. We all also agreed (except Chad the yougster) that 20 yrs. ago we would have all been out there no matter what the weather. I guess you really do get wiser as you get older. At 9AM the rain had still not slacked off and the stories were starting to go around for a second time. We decided to go to town for breakfast...there's the food thing again, JC. We went to a restaurant with a breakfast bar, all you could eat for one price and every kind of breakfast food known to mankind. Needless to say, those restaurant folks lost money on this group. We headed back to the house with the weather still crappy and looked to be that way the rest of the day. I went ahead and packed up for the trip home. I really didn't want to sit through the evening rain...and besides, I needed to get home in time to vote. Out of two days I hunted approx. 2 1/2 hrs. and saw zero deer...but was not disappointed at all. I got to spend time with friends that I don't get to see often enough. I think one of Charlie's famous lines sums thing up for me..."Being there was good enough."
Well said Bagman! CK :clapper:
CK....your ears must have been burning. We discussed and cussed you on more than one occasion. Vance now knows to keep his eye on you at the sweat. :bigsmyl:
Well nothing was moving out back tonight. Would have had to been looking the right direction though. As wet as the leaves are you couldn't hear a squirrel scampering 5 feet from my stand.
Hope the boys at Chads fared better.
Daggone!!! Don't any of you dudes have a JOB!!!!! I gotta work to feed my wife & kids & pay the mortgage and the lectric bill and the car payments!!!! Did ya'll hit the lotto or somethin!!!!
PS....come Friday, I'm on vacation fer a week. I'll let Momma work ta pay the bills!!!!
Just talked to Chad...Charlie hunted a stand behind the house that he saw a couple bucks out of the other morning and saw a doe and fawn out of range.
Vance sat in a ladder stand on the next hill over and rattled in a spike buck which he had close enough, but was in too thick of brush to get a shot,
Chad sat on his couch :readit:
Otto I think the "old" guys are retired and the rest live near by.
But I wonder what they did before they retired to be able to hunt the rest of their lives...
Looks like a very large time is being had by all! Dandy buck, Chad!
Claudia
Wow long day on the road today. Ughhh.
Anyhow talked to Chad by cell phone just after noon. Nobody saw anything this morning.
How many deer are you allowed each year up there Mickey?..... Terry
Depends on the area of the state you're in Terry. You can only take 1 buck no matter what and get up to 5 does tags depending on the zone. In my zone I can take 3.
Good stuff fellas. Congrats Chad!
-Brian
www.bowyersjournal.com (http://www.bowyersjournal.com)
Congrats on a fine hunt guys. You fellas are livin' large.
Wow long time since I've had a report..lessee Wed afternoon both Charlie and Vance had opportunities at bucks. Charlie chose not to shoot, Vance couldn't. Yance had the really nice 8 point at under 20 yards on the ground in his ghillie suit. This morning Vance slept in Charlie had a chance to shoot a couple small bucks and again passed them up.Chad slept in.
I got up to hunt with them one last time tonight. I had a chance to shoot a small buck and passed (Counted coup on him twice at 15 yards..he was there for 25 mins). Charlie saw a buck out looking for some romance long distance. Vance saw zippo.Chad saw zip.
We all went out to dinner at Gold Star (Cinti Chili) which they both loved.
Tomorrow morning is it people. Last hunt for the boys. After that Charlie is headed for Columbus to meet up with an old Viet Nam buddy and Vance is headed to North Carolina to see his daughter.
Thanks for the update Ferret, was wondering how things were going. Pretty cool Vance being that close on the ground.
Funny you should post on this thread Roughcountry as your name came up in conversation tonight while we were standing there in the dark after the hunt....It was all good.
You boys are havin way to much fun. :)
Thanks for takin us along.
What a great group....I've met two...I'd sure like to meet the other two!!!
Thanks Mickey...
Hard not to smile at that pic Micky! Good to see ya representing for the short guys! CK
LOL Curtis if you look down between Vances legs you can see a board used for edging. I'm actually standing on that, otherwise I'd look really short!!!! :biglaugh:
Great thread guys......Is that the same as Skyline Chili Mickey?...... We get the youngest daughter to send us back packets of it a couple time a year...... Good stuff...... Terry
Terry yea there are 3 different versions of Cinti Chili..basically all the same stuff. Gold Star, Skyline and Empress. The Gold Star restaurant just happened to be the closest to Chads. Here at home we eat one of the three at least once a week. Yes very good stuff.
You should get her to send you the cans, pour into pan, heat, pour it on the spaghetti and eat! LOL
Charlie had Chili, spaghetti and beans (called a 3 way bean..no cheese)
Vance had Chili spaghetti onions and cheese (called a 4 way onion)..plus he put hot sauce on his
I had chili, spaghetti and cheese (called a 3 way)
and of course we all had "coneys"...a small hot dog on a bun with chili sauce, mustard and cheese (plus onions if you want) .Vance and Charlie both had seconds on the coneys.
These are foods Cinti is famous for. That plus Hot Metts (HDFH), Graeters Ice Cream and White Castle hamburgers. Everyone that comes here to hunt HAS to eat some of these items. ;)
Mickey,
My wife graduated from the University of Cinci. We now live in CA but have family send us cans of Skyline. You're last post is making me hungry.
As a vetern of much Skyline and Gold Star fine dining (I prefer the 4 way with onion and hot souce), I bet the drive back to camp was odiferous........
I'm depressed for the following reasons:
None of my freinds hunt.
None of my freinds look cool in camo.
None of my freinds know what a ghillie suit is.
(it just occurred to me: time for new freinds)
Man, I'd sure love to hang out and eat chili with these guys1
I knew I should have gotten back down to Chad's for the Thursday hunt....but had a list of honey do things to take care of. Just to make myself feel better, think I'll head over to Skyline for lunch. Hope Charlie and Vance have some luck today. Thanks for the updates Mickey.
Dick you should have come over last night... I bought!LOL
Last report: The boys will be eating Tag Soup
Charlie saw nothing this morning, Vance saw 3 or 4 including a small buck, but no shots.
They are gone now headewd toward more adventures someplace.
WOW****UNDERLINE WOW!!! :scared: :scared:
Done some pretty wild things over the years but standing on a postage stamp 500 ft up a tree was more of a FEAR FACTOR than I was ready for.
Then when Chad and Charlie showed and told me about the sewing on the teather slowin yer fall down, like I was to expect that to happen. I wanted NO PART of that EVENT!!
Least on a Equine ya can get holt of something.
Charlie is off on a Birthday Party (Semper Fi Marines) :bigsmyl:
Chad beat ya!!! THANKS TONS Bro. and I'll be back if you'll be for having me again :notworthy:
Mickey and Dick you two were the iceing on the cake, plus ya know the best place fer VITTLES
I don't know where to start! What an awesome week. I got to spend alot of time with some good friends and was lucky enough to shoot a decent buck. It was great having everyone there to help trail the buck and made the experience that much sweeter.
It was great having Charlie and Vance in camp. After seeing all of the pics Vance brought of Wyoming, I'm gonna try to get him to adopt me. At least during hunting season! The guys seemed to have a good time and i have no doubts that they would have taken home some meat if they would have just had a better guide.
Vance, I'm glad to see you made the trip safely. Your more than welcome anytime you want to come back!
I'll wait till the guys get started good with their story telling and i'll jump in with them. This hunt is one i will remember for a long time.
Thanks to everyone for all of the kind words. I ain't a very good hunter or a very good shot but i do get lucky every now and then! :D
Here is a daytime pic for ya!

This where we spent most of our time.

Curt, While it may not be the same group of guys, you are welcome at that table anytime!
Here is a pic from the first evening of me and my big buddy, Dick.
:scared: Put down the bow and step away from Mr Easter...... Ya never want his to get that close. :readit: I thought we'd been through all this before somewhere. :D
Vance...Was great sharing a camp with you and do come back to Buckeye land and hunt with us again. We'll try to come up with a bigger and lower treestand for you the next time. :D Still hoping to be in your neck of the woods next summer...I'll let you know. I'm also glad I got to hunt with Charlie again before he becomes even more famous...and dumb bunch Mickey...who's already famous. :bigsmyl:
CK, It had been a long week and i was feeling vulnerable! :scared:
I sure look forward to hunting with those boys again sometime.
Great story guys and nice buck Chad, also great shot placement :campfire: good food, :archer: If you get something, that's just more frosting on the cake.
Vance you look good in that gillie suit but can you shoot your bow with it on? I've got one and seems I'm always gettin my bowstring caught in it....even after I trimmed on it.
Nice Buck!
ttt
Thanks Gentlemen! It was my pleasure having these guys in camp when i took my buck.
Cool pics Chad...Is West Union in Clermont, Adams or Brown County? I'm on the West side of Cincinnati. If you ever get to Switzerland County, IN, I can probably hook you up with a hunt.
Woody
David,
West Union is in Adams county. Thanks for the offer! I'm always up for hunting somewhere new.
Heard nothing but good reports about Adams County deer hunting. Brother-in-law used to hunt in Adams and Brown Co. quite a bit. Some big deer running around there.
Woody
I haven't had much time to internet lately, and driving to work realized I hadn't followed this hunt-along. Quickly searched tradgang and found it.
Well, please allow me to add my congrats to Chad on that buck, and join this elite group as having spent a wonderful hunt last year at Chad's place. I probably hunted most of the same areas they did. This thread is giving me a big grin...
Chili at GoldStar, Mickey insists ya gotta do it, and we did. I love traditions like that!
Sitting around the couch at Chad's, killing time watching one of 1500 movies he owns, haha.
Watching the leaves/change color thing from an afternoon stand in bright sunlight. Wow!! Absolutely stunning!
Seeing trails and deer sign only dreamed of around here.
Shooting those haybales and targets behind the house, perfect archery range.
Just being in a private area with that much big buck potential will make you sit a stand on full alert the whole time. You guys do realize what you have there right??? LOL
It was amazing how Chad could rattle up bucks almost at will. One morning he hit the horns and a huge buck blasted down the field edge outta the heavy fog before he could put the horns down, was on him immediately. He switched quickly to bow but missed. You don't get to hear and experience these stories unless in person, and my week was full of that. I missed a small 8pt behind his house in the woodline, that later walked about 30 yards from his house/car while he sipped coffee on the back porch (he slept in). Another time was quietly getting out of that same stand, once on ground, looked up to see a nice dark 8pt walking right at me thru the trees. He turned into the brush at 20 yards, no shot.
I have a line on a small private tract in Illinois for next year, and very much look forward to visiting that area of the U.S. again!
Chad, please tell your father, wife Shannon, and kids hello, and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Mark, Glad to see ya found it. I meant to email the pics to you but plum forgot. We had a great time on this hunt. I hope your able to make it back up here in the future as i would love to hunt with ya again! You been doing any good down there in bayou country?
