Hey I just got back from a blackbear hunt and couldent wait to tell you guys... I ARROWED ONE!!
It was about 200 lbs which is the average size of one here in Alaska. The majority of the blackies taken here are under 200.
I will have pictures up before too long and a story to follow.
I am exhausted from the pack job. 3 1/2 miles from the truck and most of it uphill.. UGH!!
If I am feeling up to it I will have everything posted before too long.
Hey let me be the first for congrats on the successful hunt. Can't wait for the story and pics.
Sweet!!!!! Congrats dude...may you have a bigger one :bigsmyl:

Yeah its hard to come by big black bears here.
They have about a 3 month growing period and a loooong hibernation. This one just came out of its den. No fat reserve at all. I have to get some rest.
Pictures and story coming soon.

You know youngsters, a hard day and they sleep all day the following day!
I received a PM from Frank at real-late thirty this morning so I bet he's still snoozing or maybe he's cutting and wrapping bear chops!
me too! Congrats and can't wait to see!
Another PM just came in saying he was up late cutting meat. Hopefully that means he's awake and ready to post us some pics!
Awesome!!!Four days until the end of Montana's bear season, so I've still got my fingers crossed. I hope I can find one as big as yours before Wednesday!
Alright done cutting the meat up. Grinding the hamburger and will be done in a sec :)
Sorry for the wait
pics and story coming soon.
How MANY seconds? Have been waiting since last night, come-on man!
My dad and I made our way up the mountainside. It was about a 3 1/2 mile hike from the truck. Carefully stalking around the brush is hard with treestands on our backs. When I got to my barrel all of my sticks were knocked over and the area was torn up with bear sign. Just re-sticked the front of my barrel and re poked my honey drip then started to climb my tree. I got all situated and my dad left to his stand.
I sat there eating a big piece of beef jerkey when I remembered my binoculars in my pak. WHOA I diddnt need binoculars to see what was standing right by my tree. Mr. Black bear had heard my dad leave when he decided to come down for a snack. I waited for him to go to the barrel when he decided it would be fun to dig a nice big hole infront of my barrel so he would get comfy. In the mean time I was getting my arrow ready and stood up in my stand. It then started standing up licking the honey on the tree. After about 30 seconds he decided it was finally time to eat! He stuck his head in the barrel but had his hand in the way.... no shot.
After chowing down for a while it wanted some of the peanut butter ontop of the barrel. He then gave me a perfect shot when he was licking the barrel and scratching at the peanut butter.
I steadied my bow over the shooting rail and picked out a spot on his hide. I concentrated on that spot and let go.. Darn it looked like I shot low. But with further inspection with the binoc's I noticed the fletchings and shaft were covered in blood.
I watched it run 30 yards and sit down by a tree. Then it just slipped out of sight. I called up my dad on the radio and he came over in an hour. He was infact having some bear action of his own...
When he arrived he told me, " got a clean pass through" and all my worring was gone. There was a great blood trail starting five yards from my barrel. I tracked him to the spot where I last saw him and spied it piled up in a devils club thicket.
Succes at last!! It was a really nice bear about 200 lbs and not a mark on it.
Well I will let you guys see for yourself.

There I am smiling with my first bear taken with a trad bow.
The bow used was made by Steve H. 57lbs ,the broadhead was a 145gr snuffer, and the arrow was a 760gr lam birch.
Special thanks to Steve for an Awesome bow and inspiring me to hunt black bears!!
Enjoy,
Frank

Excellent Frank- great pics and even better shot!
way to go frank way to go
by the way those innocent looking brown sticks arent...
Thats devils club..
OUCH!
That's great Frank
What's a honey drip?
Oh a honey drip for me is a bottle of honey tied up 15 or so feet in the air so the honey drips all over the ground and my barrel. I jsut put a knife slit in the bottom and it will take a few days for the honey to drip out.
They seem to love the honey drip. Once there was a sow and two cubs. The cubs stoob up and were getting coated in the honey drip. The little fella fell over and got covered in leaves and started bawling. THe mom licked him clean then batten him down a hill and off they went. It was cool.
P.S.
I deleted the pic of the broadhead wound because its kinda grody. But if you wanna see the impresive hole the snuffer put in it I could send it to you or maybee post it back up if I get enough requests lol.
congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats! Good job!
Excellent. The smile will last for weeks.
Nice looking bear & Bow

Great job! Thanks for sharing the pics and story.
Congrats Frank, good story and pics along with that bear. Have you ever done any Honey Burns?
Awesome man! That is so sweet.
Way to go Frank!
NICE WORK! I AM VERY IMPRESSED!
Shawn
oh yeah I have done a lot of honey burns.
But it wasnt a good idea for this spot because it was terrible dry in the woods.
Alaska seems to be burning pretty good right now.
UPDATE
only one bear seen at my dads hunt today. But I did get some footage of a sow and cubs (one of which was a cinimon bear).
When we are done hunting I will hand over the tapes so you guys can watch :)
Job well done, snuffers are lethal! call me when you get a chance!
Yeah I will give you a call after 5 today!
Awesome. Great hunt and bear. Love the pictures.
I've put in for a bear permit here in MI for the last three years. I'm hoping that my number will come up this year.
I wish I was hunting right now :)
I wish you luck on the draw!
way to go, Frank!
Thanks everyone!
Any more pics Franklin?

No fat or hair is going to clog up that baby. A half blind person could have followed this blood trail.
By the way I am just parting the hair by the hole.
Thats a biggun hole huh?
Congrats Frank! I'm still waiting for my bear to show up. A exit wound like that makes a guy think about switching!
Well done young man!
Thanks Mr Lamb! I read about you in the traditional bow magazine my dad picked up for an airplane trip.
By the way thats the entry hole! THe exit hole was in the armpit of the other side. It was messy looking and nobody wants to look at that.
Congrats Frank!
I had some brown bear company on my bait but that's it for me so far down here in Kenai.
oh brown bear at your bait sucks...
I was down by the seward side of the kenai lake. Ohh man my dad got a bruiser there today also.
430lbs a huge male!!!
