Ah, do you mean you won't have to drag it back to the truck. If I was by myself, I would have to drag that big sucker WITH the truck, BACK home. I couldn't get it in the bed of the truck by myself. That's one BIG pig.

Let me just comment on your success with all due respect and pride in your accomplishment....

NO FAIR,NO FAIR, NO FAIR!!!

(GUYS...Curtis emailed me the story. This wasn't the big one he's been after)

Boff... He means he had to drag this hog back to the house with the truck. He sure didn't load it IN the truck by himself.

Curtis, real nice piggy and looks like a 10 ring shot too. Also looks like you were shooting a Reynolds bow, gotta love how they shoot. Can I stop by and play bows n arrows when I come to TX this Feburary?

OK, I've gotten two and a half hours sleep and Im up and running. Debbie headed to her deer spot this morning hampering my search for piggy #2.

(The story) The hogs have been kicking my butt lately. The extreem pressure me and Charlie Lamb put on them a couple of weeks ago really educated them. They seem to be busting me every hunt.
Well, I educated them again by moving to a new location.

The moon was fantastic last night. I could easily see 100 yards like it was day time. I've been hunting one particular hog that leaves tracks as big as a coffee cup. I shot at him one night while Charlie was here but my bow contacted a tree limb upon release and I missed. Well, The Big Bruiser was romancing the ladies as he passed me at 10:40 pm. with no front feet on the ground. He was doing some serious breeding!!!! This white Bruiser I killed would rush him and fight for a minute then the big fella would knock him on his butt. The big one has 6" over this hog and probably another 75-100#.

Finally, without any notice the big sow exited with Big Boy in tow. This was a critical juncture. I decide without thought to capitalize on the moment and as soon as Mr Whitey turns I put a Griz 190 through both lungs and heart. He was down in 100 yards. He wasn't the one I wanted but he's a fine trophy anyway.

A few stragglers hear the commotion and come cruizing through about two minutes after the shot. I instantly grab a Doug Campbell Trade point and run it through a much smaller hog. I should find the hog this morning when Debbie gets in from hunting. He was hit a little high but the arrow was sticking out both sides as he departed.

Specs: Thunderstick 2, 60", 51#@26". Arrow Dynamics Carbon tipped with a Grizzly 190 and a 40 gr insert. Hogs weight? I'll leave that to your imagination. Thanks for the replies. Hopefully there is more story to unfold later. Curtis

Now for the ugly conclusion.

I've absolutely done everything I can do to find pig #2 but to no avail. I knew that the shot was high last night when it all played out. I've searched every inch of property within a mile and not even a sign. To make things worse, I lost the arrow with Doug Campbells trade point on it. Im really dissappointed because Id planned to send the arrow to Guru for his collection once Id made meat with it. I guess I'll have to use the last trade point I have to go out and do in another pig. The roller coaster ride continues. CK

I was about to haul off the hide of Mr. Whitey and thought Id get a pic of the famed "fighting shield" that the big Boars carry. This fella is sporting at least an inch of cartlidge and grissle over his goodies.

Good pic CK, but one has to feel that shield with their own bare hands to understand what we archers are up against. It is indeed some formidable stuff. The closest thing I can compare it to is the hardness of a football players shoulder pads.As a matter of fact it would be much easier to shoot thru a shoulder pad than the shield on a big ol boar IMO.

Niceun Mr. Kellar

Ferret, just how many shoulder pads have you shot through?

Where is this "shield" located on a boar?
I didn't know they had that.
Huh...learn something new everyday on this board.

well Meat we play the Browns tomorrow and if we are going to win I may just have to slip a little osage bow up into the stands and see ha ha

On the other hand I have probably killed a dozen boar hogs, one of them with a shield so hard and thick thick that I saw another archers (3) three bladed arrows bounce off of. It was impressive to say the least.

Curtis, bummed about your loss and the arrow, that would have been really cool to have.Good to know your still thinking about it though.Figured you had long forgot about it.Looking forward to the next hog story and pics.

As a taxidermist I can tell you that the shield is "tough as hell".Imagine trying to thin that part of the skin to the same thickness as the rest of the skin for a mount.  :readit:    :help:

so for we who are just plain dumb !! is the white area shield or fat ? or is the shield the darker area under the white ?if it is the white area can some one loan be a couple of LAWS rockets for a pig hunt ?--- herb ain't never shot a wild piggy but i am going to
Title: Re: Moonlight Madness and meat
Post by: Littlefeather on November 28, 2004, 08:30:00 AM
Herb, The shield is the full thickness you see from the hair to the thin layer of fat under the cape. It is extreemly tough! Like Ferret said about seeing arrows bounce off a big hog. It happens. I've had it happen several times. Sometime if the head sticks you can still see the ferrel on the head as the hog runs off with the arrow. Hence the importance in taking 1/4ing shots or at least close enough shots that you know you will hit the tiny sweet spot. The shield protects the shoulder but gets thinner right behind it. Gotta shoot tight. CK

Hutch,

Jim builds a very nice bow, and you won't find a more classy individual to do buisness with.

My choice this year was either build a few myself, or buy one from Jim.

Curtis,

Very educational. Thanks for posting pics of the shield I've heard folks talk about.  I've never seen a wild hog in my life, but I sure hope to someday.

DAAAAAANNNNNGGGGG! Go away for a couple of days and you go an kill nuther hawgzilla . You say that other feller has 6" an a hunert pounds on this one? So tell me Curtis, how do you keep yerself from clankin when you walk....cause you got steel huevos huntin a hog that big by moonlight!  :bigsmyl:

Real nice pig, great pic of the shield too.

Post by: Littlefeather on November 29, 2004, 01:28:00 PM
Yep, 6" and about 75# bigger is a good guess. Im going back after him again this evening before the moon plays out. I located the big boar yesterday about a half mile from my house. As usual, the hogs had put themselves in a Cockelburr patch where an ambush is all but impossible. Hogs should be illegal. The fun is just toooo much.

Clank when I walk? No No, my friend. I sound like luke-warm jello. The big boys will make you go jelly legged and spinless real quick!!! The whole experience is surreal. Moonlight, squeeling, hog musk at nose end and constant flurry of motion. Just don't get any better! Hopefully I'll follow up this evening with pics. CK

Yep! Got it! It's somewhat ironic that I was going through old and dammaged arrows last night and found that very head. It's headed back into the quiver. I found it about a month after loosing the pig. Found it at a fence crossing, just the front half of the shaft. CK
