I've been trying for a few years now to take a coyote with trsd gear.
Well, this year it all came together. I called and almost instantly, I was surrounded (more or less) by 4 coyotes. I picked the biggest and sent off one "cedar express".
Man I'll tell ya....those dawgs are tough critters.....it was a perfect shot and I'm guessing he went 100 yards. Farther than a whitetail or black bear would run imo.
Took it with a martin hatfield , cedar arrow, and zwickey broadhead.

very nice. not many can say they took a yote with a bow, let alone traditional. It looks like you guys are having a mild winter too. Where in Canada are you?
Now how cool is that? Nice looking song dog!
Congrats  :notworthy:
Great throphy with your recurve..
The deer in your neck of the woods will appreciate it too.
That's a big ole' yote! Congratulations on a very rare trophy
Claudia
Thats great...congratulations. That is one sweet yotey. Looks like a good pelt too.
BEA,
nice yote! even nicer with your recurve! i agree with you on their toughness. the 4 that i have arrowed have all gone over 100 yards. just goes to show how much stamina they have. congrads!
They are some kinda hard headed for sure!! Just don't want to die, them dogs!!!
Congrats!! I've been trying to get one with a bow for years. Very honorable trophy!!!
Nice one. Lets see---- back quiver-mountain man hat?
That's a JOB.. very well done My Friend   :notworthy: :notworthy:
Not easy to do with so many eyes.were you on the ground or up high?Congrats on a nice trophy.
John
THanks folks.....I was very pleased. I took him on the ground.
I was driving up an old logging road, on my way to check a bear site, when I hit a long straight strecth and saw a yote cross the road. Maybe 200 yards away.
I stopped the truck, grabbed my "scream'n demon" rabbit in distress call, sat next to a big tree and let rip. Like I say, instantly, 4 dogs ran into site. The one I arrowed was actually sitting, looking away from me when I let fly.
Hope to do it again before the winters out !
Thanks for the kind words.
"Where in Canada are you?"
I'm in Nova Scotia (on the east coast) and yes, almost no snow at all this year.
awesome job!!!!!!! i had planned on trying for yotes tommorow morning with longbow but we have extremly high winds right now. it is mating season here so i will be using a couple custom howlers and maybe pup in distress howler. what are you going to do with the hide? you can have knife handles made out of both the jaw bones and leg bones. congrats!!!
Ken
BEA,
nice job :scared: like you say, they surrounded you in no time.
dave
good luck tommorrow Ken ! I gave the hide to a fella who wanted one...now I'll just have to go get another lol !
sweeeeet :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
it'a an open reed mouth call. The best I've ever used ! I may invest in an E caller...but the mouth call just really appeal to me.
While I'm at it....I'm open to any tips folks ! I've really only ever called in a few of these critters......
Very, VERY nice!
i use moth calls only, much more control than e-callers. during feb and march i switch to howlers alot. there are some really talanted call makers out there and a good custom call is awesome as well as not to expensive. it is a blast calling yotes but it is extreamly tuff trying to nail one with bow, you should be proud!!!
I've got a howler....do you use a howler alone or in conjunction with distress call.
I can get them to respond with howlers but never commit to it and come in ( I'm probably doing something wrong) The only call I know is kinda like a yip.yip.yip HOOOOWL....
I'm all open to suggestions. The nest one I get with the recurve is for my camp...hopefully this winter
pm your addy and i'll send ya a coyote howling video by Sceery that explains and show all yote howling and vocalizations, one of the better vid's i have watched concering howling.
Thanks
Very nice! I've had the opportunity to shoot a few. I've yet to see one go down easily. Congrats! CK
Congrats on a fine trophy!!! Good Shootin' !!
My yote must be the exception,it went all of 10 steps and was dead in seconds,Woodsman thru the goodies!!
That is a top-tier trophy with a traditional bow!! Hope you get another soon.
I would be getting it mounted.
A good place to hear call sounds is Varmint Al's web page. He has a list of coyote howls and injured animal sounds you can download. I burned a CD of sounds so I have the option of using a walkman with speakers(keeps the attention off me). It is more rewarding and fun with a hand call in my opinion.
thanks...I'll try and find it Varmint Al's webpage...and I agree hand call are more fun.
Congratulations! ..that's a nice big dog.
I shot one with my longbow some years back and it was the toughest critter to give up the ghost I've ever seen.
!["" "[dead]"]("graemlins/dead.gif")
I saw him hunting mice in a meadow and called him in by sucking on the back of my hand making a squeaking sound.
I hope you don't regret giving away the hide, a yote with a bow is a special trophy...especially the first one. I had mine done in a full mount standing on a base, he looks like he's still alive.
Ron how pretty of a free trappers hat would that song dog have made eh?
bea, how much did it weight? thats a huge one. I took a female a couple years ago with my selfbow that weighed 55# and I thought that was big!
As wary as those critters are, it's a wonder that anyone can kill one with a bow. Also, it seems that they never stand still for more than a few seconds then they are off again. I also killed one a number of years ago from a tree at three yards. The shot was as perfect as it could have been and the coyote died 6 yards on the other side of the tree that I was in after making several 360's after the shot. I did get pictures but regretably did nothing else with animal. Great Trophy BEA!
Micky...I've already got a coyote hat...and a beaver hat. two muskrat hats and an otter hat.
I like fur hats. :bigsmyl:
I never weighed him...but I expect it was in or around 50 lbs. It was a big critter ....I'm a shade over 6 foot..so it was pretty long.
Oh, and Ron, you may be correct.....I sorta regret giving it a way already lol !
I have mine skinned out to do lifesize some day when I get to it.They make great looking mounts!!
Here's the full mount of my coyote looking down from his perch in the loft of my shop

Nice job!they are very skittish animals, shot one last season didnt get 30yds down its back trail and 2 other dogs caught the blood trail, they devoured the dod I shot.
Wow, I've had a few around BUT haven't been able to make it come together.
great job!
Nice trophy! We've just started getting coyotes in our area the last couple of years or so - at least that's when I started hearing reports of people seeing them - but I haven't seen one alive yet....
Just found this.
...Man, that's cool.
not an easy feat !!!
Manny
Hey Bea, very nicely done, great looking coyote.Nice to see a fellow East-coaster on here. Weird winter this year with no snow isnt it.Congrats ... Trevor
I'm lov'n the snow free winter ! Give our whitetails a break after the last few winters.
Congratulations! Got my first one this year with a longbow. What a rush!

and today (behind my bow)
Ryan, Second pic was too wide, nothing bigger than 600 pixels wide.Feel free to re-post after editing the size. Thanks
That's awesome.
I just got a special invite to hunt a few handful of yotes on private property. With a bunch of luck... I'll have a few pics like yerz before the end of the summer.
Big congtrats!
Frank,
best of luck to ya brother, it ain't easy!!! i have been trying sence last year and its tuff to draw on ole wiley coyote. i definitly think a decoy helps for bow hunting yotes. a stuffed animal is fine, just enough to take their eyes off ya. i plan on trying alot more this year as mating season just kicked in and the big dogs will be moving and answering howls soon.
Way Cool!!
Great Job! Those rascals are tough to bring down (and hit!)
Very cool...I would love to shoot a yote. I have tried calling them with a wooden mouse squeaker but can't get them in close enough. Dina
The Scream'n Demon call I picked up is the best I've heard imo. The guy who makes them tunes each and every one before it leaves his shop.
I'm not sure I'm allowed to put his website here on the board....am I ?
If anyones interested though I can email it to you ... I assume that'd be OK.
just got on here way to go calling coyotes is a blast, lots of good calls out there. I always keep a turkey/elk Diaphragm in my mouth works great for close range and not to much had movement and its always right there plus you can make about any sound with them things
about a month ago I saw what I am sure was a coyote on my place. I saw about a milion of them when I lived in the desert in Ca. but I did'nt think they were this far east.
Maybe that has a lot more to do with our lack of rabbits tha the hawks.
Wow!! thats a great yote
-K.M.
Congrats again, Bea - now tell them about having to decide which buck to shoot this year .... lol
that is one hell of a feat!!!!!!! congrats!!! I have a hard enough time with a 22-250!!!!! :bigsmyl: ron
Congrats man! way to go. what was your set-up, what call? location etc...i want to shoot one this winter.
BD
The call was a scram'n demon mouth call. I think some good luck was invlolved...more than any particular skill lol !.
The way things unvolved just turned out perfect for me. They came from behind me (on the run) went past me , stopped , looking forward, while I was behind them.....I hope I'm wrong but that may never work out that well again !
Don't know how I missed this one, Awesome song dog man! You sure that ain't a wolf? He'd make two of our local yotes....
Great Yote BEA. and quite a stroke of luck to have them come in so quick.
I am still marvaling at the simplicty of that call Ron LeClair mentioned. I got the whole office's attention anyways while "experimenting".
Hey HuntwiselyW and Alpo...small world eh ?
HW....yeah man...that was a great morning....deciding which 8 point to shoot !
Some days are diamonds brother !
Heading out for a try at some more coyotes next week...fingers crossed.
Good luck, friend ! Wish I was going with ya !
