Shawn is not lying about this new spot to hunt this year. I have a good feeling many shots will be taken there and hopefully a few bunnies.My wife(Shawn's daughter) will be there to help with the spread and make sure things run smooth. All of the hunting area looks great for bunnies this year and the hunt should be memorable.Thats not to mention the awesome prizes up for raffle. See ya all there.

Stone Knife, I am not sure who is driving the farthest but we have some from Vermont, NH, LI. Conn., Mass and way out in western NY, plus Pa. in years past. You guys are all nuts!! This is gonna be awesome and now I got my son-in-law hooked(Nomad88), now I just got to get him some more arrows. Joe, sounds great, I like a good rub now and than. David thanks for keeping track of the food as well. We all gotta get dancin' for some snow. The sports drink are a good idea and also someone or everyone may want to bring a coupole banana's they help with cramps almost immediately(A bunch of whooses)but just in case they help. Pete glad ya can make it, this group is pretty amazing and we even kill a rabbit now and than. I am in the same boat as Curt, I have had some real gimmes and blown them. I have bunnies run right over my feet, I reached into a bunny tunnel in the snow and basically grabbed one and it run out thwe other side. bjk should remeber that one from the first hunt as he was standing beside me in awe!!! The guys on the first hunt remember that first area of multi-rose we hunted, it was incredible, we put out like 15 rabbits in about 100 yards or so!! We do not hunt that anymore but the new spot is a s good or better!!! Curt is right about another thing. I AM PUMPED!!! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

Nope, no snow but I got something better. I got word on the bow donated to our raffle. This bow is coming from Chek-Mate bows and Chad Weaver, who we all know as LBR, from recurves.com. is that awesome or what. Chad makes a great string and if ya need one, give him a shout!!! The bow is a Falcon recurve all dressed up with some special woods direct from Chad!!! I cannot believe it!!! I am sure it will be a pretty special bow!! I gotta  add an OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! right here in the middle for that one!!! Larry good to hear from ya, bring something to eat is all I can say as this crew will eat, no matter what it is!! This thing is rolling now and just a tad of snow will do the trick!!! It is still one month away and I do not know if I can stand the wait. Joe Pm'ed me about some motels, if ya do a search for hotels in Glenmont NY you will find rooms that are just off of exit 23 on the thru-way and ya cannot go wrong with any of them. The Stones End has probably the best prices and pretty nice rooms!!! BBassi and I went bunny hunting Sunday afternoon. Saw a couple and got a shot at one as he jumped over the trail. The arrow went low but it felt good to start warming up for the bunny hunt.
Chuck weatherman says 2-5 inches of snow here tonight so your getting closer just a couple hundred miles down the thruway !!!!!!!!!

Shawn, That is great !! I got to meet Chad at Denton Hill this year as he camped right across from me.

Tom, sounds good. We can fire up the grill outside. I went hunting today after work. I got 4 bunnies in less than 20 minutes and could of killed my limit but did not have my vest and could really carry more. I got them in the rabbit valley.(Te last piece we push heading to the road). I actually had 3 and was done but I got to the truck and one went out so I took him. Guys who check this post read my post on page 13. Good news about the bow for the raffle. I saw 17 rabbits this afternoon in a half hour of huntin'! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

Im not sure what Im looking forward to more....hunting bunnies or learning more about traditional shooting. Either way, great way to spend a weekend.

Man, what a blast that sounds like.Ill be leaving for a hunt in Utah on 02/18 but Id like to buy a raffle ticket or 2 for such a noble cause.Id like to donate something too.Let me know how to go about sending the ticket money and donation.

I have been shooting at Nerf balls kicked across the yard and old stuffed animals to practice those sitting still shots.

Israel, we do not sell tickets to those who do not attend. It would be great as we would raise a ton of money, but it makes it hard to mail things out and such. If ya still want to donate something that would be great. Sorry but the first year I started this we decided as a group this was what was fair. Y acould come on the 17th. though as the raffle is held that night. Jamie, Damon has been telling me all about ya. I can set ya up with feathers and such and ya can borrow my jig, get yourself some super glue(gel) and I will have ya building arrows in no time. i can hook ya up with a spine tester as well, so we can sort out those shafts. Been following this post and was in contact with Jeremy a week ago or so who gave me some info.
Providing Mother Nature dosen't make up for the past two months and kills us with a big snow storm that day drive up, 3 of us should be there.
Pssssttt, one will be a compund shooter in disguise as a recurve shooter. $10 to anyone who picks him out as we are walking into the woods.
I married one of those Sicilian women, so I hope I don't piss her off before we come so I can bring something that is eadible.
Either way, I hope to have somethings for the raffle up to you before then.
Have you posted an itinery for us newbies as to what time to be there and the days events?

Ya can arrive nytime after 6:30am and the itinery is we meet, shoot some in the yard, eat a quick lunch, around 11 and hunjt the rest of the day. At dark we eat and drink and than hold the raffle. That is the best I can do, we really play it by ear. I will alos post directions from Exit 23 of The NYS Thru-Way. I will do this about a week before the hunt. It is looking good!! Talked to my wife about a pie or 2 and she said to have my people get ahold of her people 2 weeks in advance LOL which basically means she'll do it just remind her when it gets closer.

Im not sure if anyone else gets Traditional Bowhunter but there are some good articles concerning hunting bunnies and making small games arrows(Dec/Jan issue).
Also, as far as compound hunters...guilty, but I learned with a recurve. Amazing how fast it all comes back.
Damon....tragedy yesterday...during a final tillering......CRACK. A knot blew out. I will save whats left to show you tomorrow. Good thing I have more hickory staves lying around.
I think I know what I did wrong though...
I am hoping to head out today for an hour or so to practice on real bunnies....the ones on my target dont move.

Ed, we have over 40 now, that is real good!! Jamie, there will be some great self-bow guys at the hunt. Keith Deters and David(Huntflk) are very good, ya can some tips I am sure. We could also use a few more things. I will post them and have David add them to items needed list. Large garbage bags(40gal. or bigger 20 or 30 of them),1 gallon zip-lok bags(1 big box 15-20 bags), couple rolls of aluminum foil, A couple coolers and 6-8 bags of ice!! We are getting snow this Monday, lets hope it stays cold the rest of the winter and some stays around!! This thing is gonna be awesome and I want to Thank everyone for all their support, I am sure my Mom would be proud of us guys(and a Gal, Mo). She will be watching, and that makes me Happy!!! Ed, I have two Kwyk Styks now, same exact bows exact for #age. One is 48#s and one 63#s. I actually hunted with the lighter one more this year. I killed a nice coyote with the lighter bow. I was thinking if anybody has a call and wants to go out after dark(weather permitting) ya can bring it and we could try and call one up. I have a agreat light for doing it. Shawn, I have a fletching jig now, and I am working on a spine tester. Whenever you and Damon want to get together should be ok with me. Im sure your experience would save me a lot of time and a lot of arrow building supplies.

Gotta give us more then that Jamie.  What do you need help with?  Is your wood dry?  Bring what you have done along with you, we'll be able to set you straight.  If you need to have a bow ready for the hunt, start a new thread and you'll get all the help you need.

Yes Wapiti, I have a draw knife, thanks for the offer though. I am pretty sure I have all the hand tools I need. My main question is regarding knots on the back of the bow. Do you leave them alone completely, or can you work them? Or does it totally depend on the wood. The last one I attempted(my first attempt) had a knot in the upper limb which cracked. It was not hickory like the one I have now. The wood is dry, been down for almost a year and inside for about a month and a half with ends sealed.
I have three recurves and a longbow...they were all my Dad's. I just want to learn how to do this....be prepared I will be full of questins at the bunnie hunt. For now, I am reading all I can get and winging it. Thanks for the quick replies guys...

For your first bow, choose a stave without knots.  It might seem like a good idea to start with a so-so stave, to save the good stuff for when you have experience, but it's best to start with the good stuff right off the bat.

Knots have to be brought to the same growth ring as the rest of the stave.  This will normally leave a lump where they are.  Don't flatten them.

I think if we all brought some lumber, we could build a platform of sorts on the back of said truck. Elevated shooting position....we could literally DRIVE the bunnies out into the open, and we would all be thorn free....I mean thats a test for a truck.  :thumbsup:  
Woke up to a coating of ice everywhere. It is starting to feel like winter may show afterall....

Jamie is right, winter is coming and lets hope it lasts. Hope and Faith will be here and I am making arrows to shot off of the bows. We will take turns carrying them and shooting them and than donate the arrows to the raffle as kind of a momento. It sounds like 3-4 bowss for the table and a seperate raffle for the Chek-mate that was Donated by Chad and all the good people at Chek-Mate!! A Keith Deters bow on the table, I may have to fix the raffle to get that one!(LOL!!) Shaping up real nice and the weather is coming, I cannot wait to see old friends and meet some new ones!! Shawn,I have a couple of bows for the table.....They are "indestructabows" (i.e. solid fiberglass Ben Pearsons) 1 60"-35# and 1 66"-60#

They're good for beatin'around bows,bow fishing and such.Our buddy David could probly use one being as he likes to "throw his bows out of those thorny thickets" LOL.

I also got a hip quiver,Bowie knife,a bunch of leather gloves,and some other stuff. Being as we're not coming up untill Sunday,I'll box everything up and send it up with Joe Skipp so it will be there for the raffle Saturday night.

I slept all morning today. Been out salting icy roads.. some nice OT though.This weather looks like it means no practice shooting bunnies for me this weekend. Yup, but I must clarify that, as Nomad(Damon) backwards)told me tho8ught about putting it on the back of the limbs or something. Nothing wrong with a bald beaver, just cold maybe!! We all are kinda fixated on this hunt. I know I have at least 100 arrows made up for the various that I am bringing and about 2 dozen just to let the arrow munching steel chew up. It has not been mentioned much this year, but it will bust a bunch again this year. I will bring the balloons, we will do some distance shooting again this year. I looked at some pics from last year that Guru posted(I think). I think everyone had on orange...is there a list of stuff/gear that a first time attendee should bring such as some orange? If anyone has suggestions, Im sure all of us new guys would appreciate it.

Now we are talking. I wish we could get out. There is 1/2" of ice covering everything and it could get bad. Power outages and all, They sat if it get about 5-8 degrees cooler it will turn to snow. Jamie, heavy brush pants and a thick sweatshirt, even if it real cold, ya do not want to dress to warm. We walk fast getting to our spots and than we bust brush once there. WE do not go around piles or thick stuff, but thru it. An orange hat or vest is good to wear, just so we keep track of where we are when the shooting starts. No broadhead are allowed as well for safety reasons. That is about it, be sure of your target and let it fly. The steel is, well I do not want to spoil it for ya. Lets just say it can put a hurtin' on a bunch of arrows real quick, unless your aim is true!!! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

Chuck, Believe it or not he was running. I shot at one earlier that was sitting and my arrow deflected because the judo caught a twig. This one was running ahead of Sonny and ya can't get em if ya don't shoot at em so I let er rip !!!

Jamie, If you have a heavy Carhartt jacket WEAR IT!!!!! Last year I picked up a camo hooded Carhartt jacket and I was GLAD that I did!!!!! I had on a pair of brush pants and that hooded jacket and on 1 of the pushes I got so tangled up.....MAN,I WAS STUCK!!!!! I couldn't go foward or backward and side to side was out of the question LOL. So.....I tossed my bow to whoever was beside me,Pulled the hood up over my head and down over my face,Put my head down and just BULLDOZED my way out of that thicket!!!!!

Just remember,your gonna get bloody.and your gonna be pickin' thorns out of your hide for a week!!!!! AND.....You'll come back next year for more!!!!!   :archer:

Jamie, this is the 4th. one I have done. The first year it started out as a one day hunt and than we expanded it to two days. The last two years we have gotten 97 and 103 shots at bunnies. I believe we killed only one in 05' but last year was our best year and we got 4 bunnies. There are some great memories involved in these hunts. One that I really liike is this, we had just finished a push and there was maybe 8-10 guys walking along and waiting for the rest of the group. We had just come thru a hedgerow and Recurver and Curt(Guru) are kinda BS'ing. Talking trash a little about Gurus shooting(This man can flat out shoot). There is a metal feeder(5ga. bucket)hanging in a tree about 65-70 yards away. Recurver says to Curt, if your so good hit that feeder, Curt says whats in it for me. $20 is the response. Curt pulls one back and lets it fly. Thump right dead center. The look on Recurvers face was priceless,I watched as he picked his jaw up off ther ground(LOL!!) Anyone else remember? Or how about RU running after the rabbit with the LDB and letting one fly in mid-stride, he only shot behimd him by 10ft. but what an effort!!(LOL!!) That is what this is all about!! OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

How about when we were walking up along the road and Ru looked into the culvert pipe and saw a bunny hiding in there!!!!!

Ru squated down and launched an arrow up through that culvert pipe.....the arrow came flying out the other end with the bunny right behind it runnin' like his little cotton tail was on fire!!!!!   :scared:  The way that arrow went riccocheting through that culvert pipe I still don't know how it didn't get hit   :confused:

Yup,lots of good memories have been made on these hunts.....but there's more good memories to be made!!!!!   :thumbsup:

The mini warm up yesterday at BBassi's was a blast 6 shots in all with Bob connecting on his 3rd try as the bunny ran by.Had several times that the bunnies were getting by without getting a shot off we definately need to do that agian before the main event.

Between Bob's bunny and the ones taken earlier in the day I,m up to 8 for the pot

Yeah I know...not close to enough....once I fine tune my home-made spine tester and get some feathers and points...Im getting busy. Even if I get no shot at a bunny, it sounds like enough target shooting for me. Between that and the good food and good people...it is a win win situation.

I have broken 11 arrows just shooting in the yard. I would try and bring 2 dozen at least. One nice thing about this hunt is the amount of different bows ya can try. There willl literally over 60-70 different makes and models there, I would say with 45 guys coming there will be over 100 bows easily. WE got nasty ice last night. Jamie, get a hold of Damon and I will get ya some feather, do ya have  a taper tool? I have a pencil sharpener type I can send. I have another good one as well, but I need that one. It coming!! Shawn, I do not have a taper tool. Damon and I will talk later. Im think he is working...Im planning on bringing two recurves....a 52" Sierra and a 58" Hawk, both at 45 #. I think the string on my Sierra is too big, I need to measure it.
While we are talking arrows....I noticed the jig I got is straight....I know I should be shooting a helical...but will it make that much of a difference?

I like the long shots, I dry fire the bow now and than but still like them!!  :knothead:  This is gonna be awesome and there is a hole in the steel plate. I just cannot help you guys cannot hit it. The first ever hunt, I sat down on the hay bales and using a 7 Lakes longbow, sent the first arrow ever fired at the bunny hunjt straight thru the hole. I have only done it 2 more times since. I'm looking forward to doing some pushing for the guys who haven't got a bunny yet. Last year was a blast...Me and the bunny who tried to hid in the field. Thats why when Shawns Dad tells you to stay here it's a good spot you stay there and you get a bunny..Cause I did...

Yup, Dad knows that property l9ike the back of his hand. I am 42 and have been hunting it since I was old enough to be carried on Dads back. I know it pretty good too. Damon has gotten to know it well also, as he hunts with me quite a bit now. My daughter picked a pretty good one!! I hope we get some snow and a few bunnies as well. That would be icing on the cake!! Wow, guys!!! Please read this post as I know I ramble a lot. I am again floored by you guys!! I came home today to find a box from ED(3dmuzzy)I open it up like a kid at Christmas. It contained a single T-Shirt, when I read what was printed on it, along with my daughter we both began to cry!! The Shirt has a picture of a bowhunter at full draw and inscribed with the words Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt 2007. I am floored!! Ed has printed up 40 of these or so and is gonna donate a few to the table, and the rest are for sale at 12.50 each, after Ed recoups his money the remainder will go to the St. Judes kids, $4 a shirt. Is that awesome or what, we all get a momento and the kids make out again. Ed, Thankyou from the bottom of my heart!!! I love ya!!  I also have other great news Sticshooter(Frank) is also donating something to the raffle, whatever it is I am sure will be gorgeous, he does nice work!! Tracy at Foxfire archery once again is donating a dozen arrows to be shot off of Hope + Faith, these will be great raffle items as well, we will shoot them off the bows and than raffle off in 2- lots of 1/2 dozen each!! He has now gone from 225 lbs down to 180 lbs. His wife has been taping his "dancing" and plans on marketing it under "The Stupid Way To Lose Weight". The other day there were 4 fellas there in white vans holding white suits with xtra long arms...don't quite know what they are for but I drove by slowly and kept going.

I didn't want them to think I have anything to do with this crazy person. I did peek in the back yard and saw Chuck on all fours with his arms above his head....doing circles and stomping. Reminded me of Kevin Costner when he tried to tell the Indians..."Tatanka..Tatanka..."

wARNING! There's such a thing as too much snow!! Meathook had to snowblow an area just for us to practice and BS. After a short hunt and some food we headed down to Toms where there was just 5" or so. Gotta love that lake effect. Yes it was cold, wellbelow zero as I recall.

I was going thru my arrows for the bunny hunt and realized I,ve busted all my woodies so I figured I,d get right on that and dip some shafts....I forgot how much that stuff stinks in the house,my wife asks haven,t ya done that before ya shoulda done it outside.We we know ya can,t do that cause it,s too cold out there so it looks like it,s gonna stink for a little bit.I did crack the basement door to the outside a bit so it should air out soon ......just in time for a second coat hehehehehehehehe

Went out two different times today. No bunnies earlier, just a huge flock of turks. Back out in the afternoon produced one bunny sighting...doing about mach 3. Even if I did get a shot at him, I doubt my arrow would have caught up.
Still no snow here...flurries every now and then.
I hope to get back out tomorrow.

This is killing me.  I want to be there in the cold & snow chasing bunnies...instead I have to be in Georgia with Ray chasing hogs.  Heck somone's gotta do it, you can let them hogs take over Georgia.  Then the whole east coast will be inindated with hogs.  Just wouldn't be right...Joan Leonard Memorial Hog Hunt!!!  :)

I have a lot to do. I am working on having enough room for all the bows and such. We are gonna use the dining room for the raffle table, as we will need a whole room for all the stuff. Well, it is awful cold and windy this morning. Maybe try taking Elma Fudd my beagle for a walk around noon time to see how she does with the bunnies.After things warm up a bit. Yup, awful cold. I was gonna go with Damon but windy and real cold. I went out and shot some in the yard and I am building arrows and such. I may take a walk out to my brothers in a little while to get out and shoot some. I am gonna take the new Roy Hall, sweet bow, what a great shooter. Shawn, I have a feeling that KS won't be coming back to you. Brian shot the heck out of the one I brought. It handled his carbons real well and 2117's and its only 51#. In fact, if it wasn't for Southpaw's alerting me every time Brian snuck the bow in his vehicle, he wouldn't need yours. Acceptable: Judos, Magnus Small Game, Tiger Claws, Nutters, Bludgeons, HTH Rubber blunts, Field pts used in conjunction with Scorpios and any homemade head resembling the above.

Again....A BLAZE ORANGE VEST is MANDATORY. We have been fortunate in the past that no accidents have occured...except the normal bleeding from cuts going through briars and guys getting "caught in the wrong place" when straddling over a barbed wire fence. Lets keep this hunt as safe as possible.

A Bow Quiver.....

Now,Like Joe,I am a Die-Hard BackQuiver Man!!!!!

However.....Before I attended my first Bunny Hunt a few years ago,Mr Skipp (and a few others) suggested that I use a BowQuiver because I would end up loosing arrows crawling through the THICK "STUFF".

Trust me My Friends anyone who has attended before will tell you,The Thickets are THICKER.....and the Tangles are more TANGLED than anything you have ever seen!!!!!   :scared:    :eek:    :scared:  Sometimes you will be so tangled you will NOT be able to move,and many times you will be crawling on your hands and knees!!!!! As for running out of arrows.....most times if your pushing,you or one of the other drivers can collect your arrows on the way through.If you're a stander most times one of the pusher can get your arrows if you point out about where they are. UNFORTUNATLY BROKEN ARROWS  ARE ANOTHER STORY    :(

If all you have is a BackQuiver then bring it and use it!!!!! We wouldn't want anyone "staying home" just because they weren't "prepared" LOL.We'll just have to have a couple "arrow picker-uppers" follow behind you guys   :archer:

Joe, has it right. We are pretty safe group anyway but just to be safe. I havea bunch of the plastic type, but they do not hold up well. An Orange hat will do also or best yet is an orange sweat shirt. Even if it is real cold 0-15 degrees ya do not want to dress too warm. I wear a union suit and my brush pants one sweat shirt and my Carhart Sweatshirt over the mess, not a coat or jacket and even with wind chills below zero, I do not get cold. Regular field points are OK but not great bunny killers, Jamie(Wannabe) go get some big wing nuts that will screw on to the shaft and sharpen with a file or bench grinder, they are a lot cheaper than field points too. Joe, Brian is test driving it, I have not decided to sell it, wait until he shoots a carbonwood 2000 off of it with 175 up front. It is only 8gpp, but man is it quiet and flat out smokes(200fps. at 28"s) I am thinking he can keep and shoot mine until the one he is gonna order is here. I am heading to Damons for his B-Day party in about an hour. He is gettin' old(31)but it is nice to have him around as he is gonna start dragging all my deer for me!(LOL!) One last thing if anyone has a folding table or two that they can bring without a hassle, please do so. I may not need them but it won't hurt. Ok went out this afternoon. The dog ran 4. Only had shots at two running, missed both. One hare was a hog, big buck male. I didn't miss him by much though, might even of got hair but being white, none on the arrow tuff to find in the snow. My dog was tired, snows run long long loops, and do not hole they just out run him.

Ishi: Sure I will keep you in mind, can always use another shooter. You will want to use hex heads. Hares are tougher than cotton tail. Thats if you hit them of course.

My 10 year old son has been riding me pretty hard about going to the bunny hunt. would this be permitted, if so i will probably drive my vehicle instead of riding and stay at a hotel i think it would be easier that way. Is the hotel that was on an earlier post in Glenmont close to you. Also he is not old enough to hunt but could he bring his bow along to shoot at the warm up? As formal/organized as this hunt is ("seems" made it appear as though there wasn't a tremendous amount of thought and planning...obviously incorrect), it is the most laid back bunch of hunt your a$$ off guys (edited to be more pc...we do get some ladies) you'll meet...if your little guy has a bow, bring him along, if he doesn't, I'll give him one.

Jim,The ride option is still open even ifya bring your boy.That'd make 6 which will be way differnt than just Bob and I making the drive.Hook road with us one time but the other times were just the 2 of us and Sonny ofcourse LOL.I can put a car top carrier on top for gear and there's 3 seats in the van.We genrally stay for the whole hunt on Sun which puts us home around 10 or 11 depending on the weather just let me know.

Of course spendin 1 on 1 time with your boy is a good thing too either way is fine.Speaking of the boy he's welcome to join ya if ya wanna get together around here before hand.I,m hopeing to get together this weekend for a little bunny bowhuntin since I only hunted in the mornin last weekend and didn,t bring my bow

Brian, I love the my new KS, heck it it was just about brand new when I got it.  I have no idea how fast it is but it seems pretty quick.

We tried out a new spot across the tracks from Dad. The first push we saw 3 bunnies and I got two shots, at the same bunny. I missed him running and he stops dead, he gives me another shot. I hit a branch and he was off. We were gonna try another piece, but I had a feeling. We needed to head to the airport. OOOHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

Nope, I do not hang around Curt enough. I miss him!! I was just called to dinner. We went to the airport and since it was 4:20 we figured we would just put one guy out in front a ways and push it. Jamie was first, we saw no bunnies after 100 yards. We than put Damon out front and pushed again. I thought I saw a bunny when we neared Damon and he said he heard something between us. I took a step and looked up and running down the old road was a bunny. I laughed out loud and said there he goes way out inn front. I was just starting into the thick and Jamie says I see one sitting here and I think I can get him. He pulls back and lets one fly. He missed but says he is still there. I said where and he said "see my arrow right next to it!" OOOOO, I see him!! I pull up and there was atiny branch half way to him. I cut it in two, which was good as I cleared a lane. Damon says is he still there? Yup and Jamie is drawing again. He shoots and misses, but by less than an inch. I say nobody move, I have a hole to shoot thru, well the bunny now has 3 arrows pretty much laying cris-crossed over him and does one of those, stretch my neck and survey things a little better to prepare for flight. Before he can run I pick out his eye and lett it loose. OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Head shots are awesome! I still did the run and practically dive on him trick, just to make sure. We got one for the pot and it was too cool. We continued on and Jamie, got 3 more shots and one we though was a hit, but no bunny. We saw about 10 bunnies and only did two small pieces, so we know they are out there and that is what we all want!! Sorry for the long post but it was an awesome afternoon, getting to meet Chris, I mean Jamie(LOL!) and hunting with two special buds! We will be doing a lot more of this as a team now!! Just got in from a walk. I saw at least 15 bunnies today. I went to our hot-spots to check them out. I had 5-6 shots but no luck, one sitting at about 40 yards, shot about 2"s high. I made the perfect quiver (IMO), just for this hunt...I'll work on something for the raffle table...its just a side stalker, but the strap is positioned differently and it is very plain.
Doesn't get hung up and the arrows are protected 100%.

Gene this is only a small portion of what we normally hunt, but the brushy area on the left edge, along with the fencerow to the right of the airport runway, and the brushy and wooded areas to the right of the runway also.  There are a couple of more spots further down the road also, so there is no shortage of acreage or bunnies, believe me.

David, that is cool. I do like that oak stand though. We hunt pretty much everything that is in that picture. I also have two new spots this year as we have so many guys. Each is only a two-minute drive. Damon(Nomad),Jamie(Wannabe) and I hunted one the other day and saw bunnies and lots of sign. If ya look at the pic. and see where there is a distinct break in the planes, go to the hedgerow on the right, that is where I killed the bunny Tuesday. Bunnies are everywhere and we can surround them now. This is gonna be awesome. OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

David, I missed a 150" buck from a stand I put up about ten feet behind it. This way I could shoot the valley and the field. Big monster, I shot under him!! I did kill a doe from it with the muzzle-loader though. I'm not sure what the waist size is it's either 30" or 36" (I just know that they won't fit me LOL)

The count is a round 50, not sure of an eaxact number, but lots. It will be great. I go thru a pair of heavy brush pants with the cordura front every year. These patches we hunt will tear stuff up. I just picked up a skid plate for Sonny.It,s blaze orange so he,ll stand out easier and should keep at least 50 thorns outta him.Also got him some tuf-foot to tuffen those pads up some more.Last weekend he ran himself raw I may consider boots but we,ll see.I,m huntin tommorrow

Just finished JLMBH 07 neck knife.  Not much but hoping it keeps me on the invite list for next year!

Also a special first ever...JLMBH briar cutting-bunny wamping forged broadhead.  This is a  thank you to woodchucker for getting me some railroad spring steel.  It packs the power of a locomotive and clears a path for the briar bunny pushers!  Disclaimer...don't use if ground frozen cause could be a briar bunny pusher sticker  :)

PS: Alright I know it is one of my forged broadheads that missed a buck and bagged a New England rock wall this past fall...but it is still intact minus the tip.  Recycling is good for the environment...Doc

Well, Me, Curt,Damon, Ed and Jamie pushed some brush. We saw at least 12-14 rabbits and Curt and I each got off 3-4 shots each. I had an easy sitting shot at 17 yards and shot right over one and Curt had a shot at one that I chased back and forth a bit at 12 yards and missed. Him and IU have trouble killing bunnies fo rsome reason, but we had a great time! OOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

I once again missed a shot that I should have made    :knothead: , he was running,I came to full draw and he stopped bhind some stuff,holding draw(my downfall!) moved to the side a bit,and let 'er rip,over the top,never picked a spot!!!    :banghead:

One more thing, I've built this bow to be shot left or right handed, so when I put the finishing touches on it it will have a "Double Floppy Rest"!  Gotta be fair now don't I?

Been out shooting with my step son today. I was working on my form more than accuracy. I noticed I was grouping rather nicely...few times the arrows were touching. When I started actually aiming, I was roughly six inches high...still grouping well though. I guess I need to keep my form as is and adjust my aiming? Any more advice is more than welcome.
Shawn, like we talked about yesterday...arrows straightened right out and flew great.
Wish I could have been out there today...hope you guys did well. Why didnt Damon come get my collar?

Jeremy, nice to see ya posting. I made me one of those tube quiver thingies today. I went in LOWES and snagged a 3" carpet tube and 2 end caps and a couple of eye hooks. Total cost $1.63, it came out pretty good. I hope ya still have one for me though, as mine is ugly and your stuff is nice. Brent,Bob and I went out yesterday afternoon and let me tell ya you fella's can stop the snow dance.It was real tuff comditions on not only us guys but Sonny too.The skid plate seemed okay and I like how it stands out which was somethin I had been thinkin about since last yr with so many guys.I don,t go out without my orange on esspecially with so many guys so the dog probably should have some safty orange too and his collar just wasn,t cuttin it.He still got bloodied up,tore an ear and doesn,t know enuff to stop whippin his tail 100mph in the briars so that was red tipped also.His feet and my nieghbors beagles feet both leaked a little but not to bad.No bunnies yesterday and thats with takin a few other guys out in the mornin with the landcannons before breakin out the bows for the afternoon.There was so much snow that the bunnies could run under it real close and ya wouldn,t have a chance.Heck Sonny was under there right next to me I could hear his bell and he was wearin blaze orange yet I couldn,t see him......yea we got plenty of snow so you fella's can stop it now LOL

In any event there really only needs to be a couple inchs on the ground.With the ice still wieghtin down the trees and 6+" of snow on top of that it,s like walkin thru a giant chest high brush pile pretty much every where cept for open fields.It was almost as bad as the very first bunny hunt at Hooks place.

And still no snow on the ground here...and I am about 15 miles south of the bunny hunt grounds. Those  conditions do sound rough swamp.

Well...I'll be breaking in a new pair of LL Bean
Maine Hunting Guide wool pants for the bunny hunt. Couldn't locate the heavier Swiss Army wool pants I've come to rely on over the years.

I ordered the Malone color...gray/black/red...I was told they were out of my size. She said the only pair in my size was Brown Camouflage!! Sold...they will be at my door Thursday. I may cheat and use them Sat chasing some bunnies behind my home....now to get suspenders     :archer:

Lots of bunnies out today. I saw 8 or so and took two 30+ yard shots....scaredem good. Would you believe it...I hit high each time. Hard to hunt bunnies solo.

Tom is right everything around here is like like a giant brush pile. Unless a rabbit runs into your feet your not going to see it. When Sonny would start one he would get on it then with him hitting the brush and all of the snow falling on the scent he would lose it. But it still feels good to get out .

Shawn, whenever you wanna come over to my stomping grouns is fine with me. We saw atleast 8...Elma put out most of em, and they were moving. She did well until it was almost dark and got a little too excited and ran off a bit. Most of the time she hung right around us, and let us know when the bunnies were close.

No bunnies today, but I was putting a hurting on those stumps. My nocks kept breaking at impact though...like four of em. What gives? Are snap nocks no good?
I did find where a yote or fox caught and was enjoying a rabbit. Head and front legs were gone..and the thing was still steaming.

Yup, snow for sure. I hunted today with the Thunderstick. I got five and missed 4 others!! For the guys that hunted last year, ya all know the spot by the greenhouses. I saw at least 20 bunnie and only hunted 45 minutes. Also some of you guys may know I missed a nice buck(twice this year, well the second time I did not miss. I went in there today and found him dead, the first big peice we hunt right by the greenhouses. It was funny though, someone had found him amd cut off his horns. The landowner came out to yell at me for huntin' there and than realized it was me and we got to talking.(New truck thru him off) I asked if someone had found the deer and cut of the horns, he  had found it and told a friend and the guys kid came and took them. To make a long story short the kid(17) was a jerk and his Dad was gonna make him hand them over but I told the kid, do not worry, what goes around comes around! Nice buck, 17" inside and heavy about 120" net. Sorry, just had to vent, now back t the bunny huntin'. We are gonna do awesome in there, we should kill some bunnies for sure!!! This is shaping up to be the best hunt and raffle yet, now lets get some snow!!! I actually killed 6 today, but one was one of those real close shots with 7-1/2 shot out of the 16. Coyotes wil enjoy it though!! OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

I'm getting stoked for this, i haven't seen 20 bunnies around here all year. I have been wanting to get together with swamp buck before the hunt but it keeps snowing around here. Jim, I work for the Highway dept. so I know what ya mean. Lots of bunnies around here. I only hunted that one peice and a hedgerow, we have to hunt those hedgerows this year as they are out in the open and should provide some good shooting. Just mount a 55 gal drum on a toboggan and drag that around with you. You will never run out then, and it will cut a nice trail for me to follow. Went out this afternoon. I saw five bunnies, heard a few more on the other side of some massive rose bushes.
On my way out, I suddenly hear this high pitched screaming. I start moving in the direction of the sound...come upon this huge grey hawk, which has a bunny. The hawk flew away, the bunny sat up and stood there for five seconds. I was amazed...so amazed I never thought to shoot the bunny. They were about three feet away. One of the coolest things I have ever seen in the woods.

Jamie!!! Now as you sit in your house eating dinner think of that poor hungry hawk whos' meal you've spoiled!!!...

Morning all...
Just wanted to share a story. My wife is a hair stylist, and during a haircut on a gentleman, somehow, they ended up talking about my new addiction...traditional bowhunting. Eventually the bunny hunt came up, and she did her best to explain what it is all about, as best she could.
When finished, the man paid and left. Ten minutes later, he was back. Said he had been thinking about what we were doing and it was a great cause.
Thought he would like to contribute so he gave my wife ten dollars to go towards the hunt/charity! Needless to say, it proves what Shawn started is a great thing and touches people in a good way.
That being said....glad to be a part of it. Figured it would help people smile a bit today...

Bunny Hunted today, kicked out 5 from the heavy briars but no shots. They weren't overly spooked but its so darn thick you can't get an arrow off.

Now that its snowing pretty good here, tomorrow afternoon should be great out back. At least I can pick up some tracks to follow....

Who would have ever thought that would grow to what it has, Hunting, friendship and sharing with all monies going to a great charity....from starting at Meathooks and continuing on at Shawn's, those of you that started this should be proud of yourselves, Shawn you deserve huge kudos for keeping it going and providing a "home base" for this event  :thumbsup:    :thumbsup:

Guys we have some snow here. We have about 2"s or so. I have been working very hard at getting the stuff together for the raffle. Frans knife is sweet and Alex, who can not make it is sending some incredible stuff for this thing. I am hoping we raise at least $2000 for the kids this year, lofty goal but reachable. Just got back in...came so close to a bunny I checked my arrow for blood...fun shooting at em running.
I saw a total of 14 rabbits, a male and a female pheasant, and five or six deer. Might head back out towards dark.
All the snow is melted...still dancing chuck? LOL

That's Cool!...I just got back from upstairs...All OK with my small set-back...So I saw a hammer and a pinch bar and a saws-all and alot of old plaster going into contractor bags!!!

The closest I got to hunting today was looking out of a window at the tree rats in my yard...But...The Great Bunny Adventure is close at hand!

Very Quiet on here lately. I was going out this morning to hunt hares, but man -5 degrees with about 15 below wind chill. Way to cold. So here I am on the computer drinking coffee.

I hear you we have -2 degree F with 25 mph winds not the kind of day to be tromping around. I had to go into work this morning when i came home i did some shoveling my hands got cold and i was working hard. I think I'll just shoot my bows in the cellar today. The older i get the softer i am becoming.

I went out yesterday late afternoon. Only saw one bunny. I found three different spots that were worn down to bare earth...yote tracks everywhere.I guess it was their den area(s)?

I,m not gonna bother this weekend.Last week was alot of work and I didn,t even see a rabbit it that stuff.It'll most likely be worse this weekend besides the cold.The cold isn,t so much of a problem as the snow covering the underground runways is,ya wouldn,t see them untill they ran into your feet Good luck to those that are gonna go anyway,ofcourse from what I,m hearin we have alot more snow than you guys East of us.

Wow, you guys are slacking off!! I just got back, and man what a great day to hunt. I saw 10 at least and got two. I took pics. but have to get set up to post. I went to my bros. house and just walked around on the power lines. I got at least 10 shots and connected 3 times. I lost one as it got to its hole before I could. Best day I ever have had bunny huntin, cept for these TG hunts. My two kills came witin 2 minutes of each other. I shot the first sitting in a pile at 5ft., the second came out of the same pile,as I was retrieving the first bunny. He ran out and disapeared, as I came out of the pile I looked up the pwer lines about 15 yards and there one sat, I assume the same bunny. I drew and released, perfect head shot. I did my usual dive on him before he gets away trick!! We may have to give this spot s try at this years hunt, we'll see how we do in our old hot spots first. trhis is gonna be good!! Now go INDY!!! Awesome Shawn. I only saw two...had one shot(running), got pretty close but lost the arrow. I heard many far off in front of me but never saw em.

We got about 6" of snow in two hours last night and more is on the way tonight !!
The closet I came to hunting this weekend was watching a hawk eat a songbird it knocked out of one of the pines in the backyard. At least he got lucky.

OK, someone pick up Steve, if not I will get up real eraly and go get him. He has been there for most of them!! Got some good news for you guys. Faith arrived today and even though it is a lefty, I strung it up and shot it. I do Ok lefty and my first group of 5 arrows was 4"s at 12 yards. It liked some 60-65 cedars with 125 grain heads cut to 29"s. I am gonna hunt it tomorrow and will post what I did on the Hope and Faith thread as well as here. I am gonna give this picture posting thing a go as well!! OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn

New batch of arrows are coming along nicely. Anyone use bohning products, and if so can you recommend a ratio for thinning in order to dip? If not, I will make do with a few experiments. I have flo. yellow(chartruese) and a sealer.I also have bohning thinner....I am also attempting to dye some turkey feathers that I hand split. Im hooked I tell ya...

Guys, hunted with Faith today and got two shots. I will post on the H+F thread later. I have recieved some questions on the raffle. Ya have to attend the hunt to win, but if ya are not there sat. ya can still enter and win as long as you are there sunday, like Chuck and his kid, just PM me with the amount of tickets ya want and Cindy will get ya in the raffle. This brings me to cost of tickets. It will be $20 for a wingspan which will be Cindys wingspan and ya can buy as many wingspans ya want. There will be a seperate drawing for the Chek-Mate(Falcon Special and it is real special) those tickets will be $10 and again ya can buy as many as ya want. If ya have questions, post them here and that way everyone will get the answers. It is getting close and the bunnies are out there waiting to succumb to us!! Okay, now that I have your attention, like last year I will be buying ten chances in the Maine moose lottery.  Thing is, they're pretty big animals, so I get to take another hunter along with me should I be lucky enough to be drawn.....anyone want to come??????

So once again, if you want to have a chance to participate in a moose hunt, (Traditional Bows only), I need to know by the evening of the raffle.  I'll put all of the names in a hat that want to participate, and draw two names, the first drawn becomes my number one subpermittee on my application, the second name drawn becomes the alternate subpermittee on the application.

Maine's hunt if broken down into two hunts, the first being Sept 24th-29th, and the second being Oct 8th-13th, so if you put your names in the hat plan on being available if we are drawn.....YOU HEAR ME YET JOE?

I'll have a signup sheet at the Bunny Hunt if any of you might be interested in this little drawing........

Very cold and windy but I did manage to kick out a few bunnies this afternoon. They seem to know their safe with just one guy busting through the briars. They just scamper out about 15 yds and double back into the next thick patch of thorns.

Definately going to need some tough gloves for Shawns hunt, not only for warmth but to fend out these nasty thorns. My bow hand is still bleeding.   :help:    :mad:

A prehunt hunt sounds good to me. Im getting psyched. One thing, anyone that hunts around here...there is one grouse that is off limits. My buddy has it trained to come to him....follows him all over.Dont worry...easy to spot..he is the one running at ya.Strangest thing I have yet to see.

Joe, I know your pain. Busting brush for bunnies alone is pretty tough. I also have been bloodied by the thorns.

Guys the bow from Chek-Mate has arrived!! It is sweet. Chad sent a new string with it and some silencers. I strung it up and went out and shot it!! Pissed me off, the first 5 arrows I shot, I broke two carbons. I dang near robin hooded one and the next I slapped in the side and broke in two. Nice accurate bow. I will post pics. later. If ya need a string or bow for that matter contact LBR(recurves.com) he went out of his way to get us this bow and deserves a big THANKYOU!!! We are going to try to shoot aerials as long as the wind cooperates so definately bring the flu flu's.

Brent, yes there will be aerials as long as it is not too windy. We will also be shooting the famous steel. It has not been talked about much but it will munch up some arrows. Good thing about this event, I had to buy a folding cargo carrier for my hitch I've been wanting to buy.. Da wife actually agreed a good thing... Man I love her....Well maybe she actually said something like it's a good thing so I can put snow blower on it so I can do her parents drive/walkways.

Just caught the late weather and thier talking about a east coast storm middle of next week didn't catch if it was going to be snow or rain but from the temps forcasted for around here I'd say snow.

I have a friend who is a police officer. I'll have him fax you an official request for your professional help on a case.

You see,there was an I.A.I (Italian American Indian)who was last seen walking into the Catskill Mountains with his bow and HUGE backquiver of arrows. He has not been seen since.

It is suspected that he may have fallen into one of the numerous holes throughout these mountains.

It is reported that he has a large supply of arrows but if he fires 3 shots in the air at spaced intervals it still could be days before anyone hears them.

The temperatures have been below freezing but police and rescue teams are hopeing that if he is in a hole and out of the wind,he could possibly live for days on his body mass alone.

Another possibility is that he could just curl up in a ball and hibernate for the rest of the winter,then come wandering down from the mountains in the spring,much thinner.....but none the worse for the wear.....

Because he is wearing his baseball cap backwards the guys shooting at him miss judge range and miss, miss, and miss all shots! Then the little monkey falls in a hole.

Thinking rather quickly, the little guy removes his speedo underware and launches them into mid air...They fall into a thicket twenty yards away. Just then someone shouts "Hey Brian Must Be Over There In That Thicket Naked! Let's Go See!" Imagine 49 guys fighting over metalic blue speedos...

In all the confusion little man gets away. Then drinks all the beer, eats all the cheese, and hides all the toilet paper back at the house.

The top knife in the picture is for the table: 3" blade, 7" OAL, 1095 hc steel trimmed out in bocote and brass.

The bottom knife I'm bringing along for Wapiti Chaser, same steel with macassar ebony and bird's eye maple.  Just needs the final sanding and the finish...

Nice looking knives, as usual.  Someone is going to be very happy come next Saturday night....  :archer:    :goldtooth:

While I'm here, does anyone have a use for some 30", 65-70 chundoo arrows?  I have about ten in very good to new condition, dipped blue with white fletching......anyone here needs or wants them let me know and they are yours.....

I think I am good on arrows for a while(until the steel anyway)....I made a dozen, then a half dozen, and then another half dozen. I have only broken one, and found the one I shot at the bunny a few days ago...
I have found that grinding feathers is worth it...so much easier to fletch.
Im getting pumped for this hunt....

Jamie, I'm pretty sure that Chundoo is another name for lodgepole pine. Not absolutely sure though, so hopefully I haven't made a fool of myself...

Just shot my newest arrows...they fly well...and seem to hit harder than the others.
Just wanted to take a sec and say this site is awesome. I have only been here a few months, and the amount of knowledge I have gained is amazing....arrow making, fletching, serving-to name but a few topics...do's and dont's....not too mention pointers on form and anchoring from the few I have already hunted with...the whole transition from compound to trad has been rather quick. Thanks everyone. Now I just need to make my first trad kill....  :thumbsup:

Thanks Mike....need to fine-tune my feather cutting and grinding, but they fly well all that considered. And, um....thats my coffee table....but thanks.
They are 28", 4" banana type, and I used bohning fletch-lac and saturn yellow cresting paint.I mixed black powder w/ water for the gray stain. They arent perfect....but I learn something each time I try a new batch. And I am totally hooked...
When are they gonna let us know how they did shooting today?????LOL

Not to put pressure on anyone,buuttt, I only have 8 responses so far from people saying they want to be in the drawing to be a subpermittee for the Maine Moose hunt, (Should I be drawn).  Keep in mind that I have to list an subpermittee and an alternate when I apply, I can't put a player to be named later down, so if you want to play let me know, the dates are listed on page 52......

Please read entire post,I am in, right? We just got back from the Toll gate shoot. Great time, but I shot lousy, should of stuck with the longbow. Curt did good, he won a nice Samick recurve, a knock off of the older Widows, still a nice shooter as it was a rihty and I shot it. I shot 196 with 2 zero, so not terrible, but far from my best. I got some donations for the bunny hunt from there as well. Some money and some nice big pieces of seal skin for the table. Guys remember we have a prize table for breaking a balloon, hitting an aerial and a bounding wood rabiit, remeber to bring some small stuff for that, inserts, a couple broadheads, whatever. Also Curt and I were talikng, everyone and I mean everyone wear something bright, either orange or chartreuse or bright red, pink whatever, SAFTEY FIRST!!! Also I will post directions mid-weeek(Weds). This thing is gonna be awesome, remeber we are here to kill some bunnies, everything else is the gravy!! Wait a little while and I will show ya why I should of stuck with the longbow! I was trying to do it as well!!! OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Shawn
