The results of a Saturday night outing with Dad. It's kind of strange seeing so many frogs still along the rivers banks in December. Texas, I love you!

Not only a lot of frogs, but nice big ones also
wow
that's some nice shootin :notworthy:

Troy... right now I'm hoping it will get UP to 25 tomorrow!
Since Curtis isn't talking about it, I'll relay what he told me on the phone.
Went out after the big gar... boys fixated on shooting one twice as big as he is.
The big gar didn't cooperate so he filled in the gaps with smaller fish and of course about half his weight in frogs.
Quoteabout half his weight in frogs.
so Charlie would that be about a "mess" for normal folk ? looks like there might be a good taste for us wee Canadian folk :D
CK looks like you had great fun ---- herb
A look into the future.

There were a few fish.

I even managed to hit a few of the frogs we saw.

Good thing Dad's camera works! CK
CK what type of frog , big as a bull frog but pattern on it is different than here?
--- herb
Tastes like chicken!
Nice shooting dude...No Bear Montana?
As a young kid I worked at a KFC and snuck in after hours and fried up some frogs in the the Sanders secret recipe. They were good and we didn't get caught.
Paul
Frog backed bow in the offing? That is some nice camo patern. Good shooting CK.
We got record lows in the minus numbers here this morning. The deer my cousin hung in the shop yesterday afternoon is frozen solid, may have to bring in sections to thaw before we can do any cutting.
Mark Twain reported that he asked an Iowa farmer how cold it got and the reply was, "If we'd had another inch on the thermometer, we'd have all froze to death."
Those are some of the frogs that are larger than the bunnies. I remember them.
Now the gar on the other hand -- we've got some that big in Kentucky. Come on Curtis, show me a big one!!!
Man, anything warm and breathing is in trouble in that part of Texas. Nice shooting Curtis!
I gotta drive down there every now and then just to slap some sense into the boy... a stop the insanity kinda thing! :D
Pssst...Rabbitman... those critters ain't warm blooded. :D (but I know what ya mean LOL)
Hmmm... CK in long underware... that could mean anything below 80ยบ :D
Did ya get the backstraps outa them gar? Good stuff!
I love shooting frogs with bows. CK, that is a LOAD of fun in that boat! consider me, officially, jealous. :)
Dang Curtis,
There is nothin alive in Texas that is safe from ya! Cool pictures, and spending time afield with dad, thats even cooler. Say hi to your dad for me, lookin forward to meeting himm in March. That weather you got is making me sick! We had 1 foot of snow here friday!
Way to go CK!
This morning it's six degrees above zero, the river's steaming, half frozen and covered with flying poop machines (i.e. Canada geese)...and you're down there bowfishing and probably getting a tan? :banghead:
Someone wake me up when April comes...
Jason,
Up here we call them geese SKY CARP!
Curtis, is there a day that goes by that you don't get a little huntin in? Looks like a lot of fun.
Charlie
hunt it, that's what we call snow geese as opposed to sky crappie for doves. :D
Yes, Charlie said it best. I am fixated on shooting a gar big enough to stop a freight train. Looks like I'm going to have to wait till he and Wesbrock take to the bow-rail around June. Can't wait to see those pics!
Legolas, What's the Colonials recipe? LOL!
Dave, Dad says he looks real forward to meeting you also. I'll be ready for a break from this intense cold by then. I hate Winter!
Wesbrock, QUIT WORK!!!!!!! We got fish to shoot man!
Charlieonfire, I really enjoy the sport and try to entertain myself daily.
Gang, Thanks for the support. I appreciate the kind words. CK
I really enjoy reading about your adventures my friend. Not many quite like you.
Good grief ! Man I would love to have a mess of those these days to fry up! :bigsmyl:
Nice goin' Curtis!
Here's another picture taken during our trip. At first I thought it was just defective, but now I think it captured the "spirits of the hunt".

Hey Curtis,
We feel "froggy" a lot in Oregon. Just not in December
Here's my daughter with her first.

Stan
I had to go look 'em up, 'cause I hadn't seen them like that either. Ours seem to be a uniform dark green above, kinda the color of algae slime. Yup, they's bullfrogs, just stretched out like Kyle said.
Warm night, eh?
Killdeer
Damn fine shootin'! I always head out with my recurve, plenty of fishin' arrows and...a couple of gigs!
Most of my frogs are caught by hand, all said.
Congrats!
TOMANO
Stan, that's such a cool pic. Who couldn't love a cute little girl like that and she even likes to shoot frogs!!! Awesome man, just awesome.
Kyle
I ain't goin down there! man that is one kreeeppyy looking pic Mark! Looks like the spooks are comin to take lil fedder away?
Aroura bora tejas?

Big frogs Ck. And lots of um! Great shootin bud!(Had me wonderin also Killy!)
CK, I hope our paths cross one day.
Stan,
That should be the next banner pic. No doubt about it.
After reading your post about all the great frog hunting Curtis, it got me all fired up too! I hunted and hunted this weekend but couldn't find a single frog for some reason
.....Man, Littlefeather you loose more arrows at game on one or your off days, than I'd get a chance to all year long.
I'm envious or your hunting life.
M
:bigsmyl:
CK, that is an awesome pic you thought was blurred...no wonder you had such great success on that hunt! BLM
Don't shoot frogs! Tha't just wrong!
C'mon Bill, they's bout the finest eatin that'll ever grace a hot skillet! Specially them ones from spring fed tanks in central to south Texas...saweeet like honey.
Thats a joke right they are darn good eating
Well, at least Bill says it aloud and not behind the scenes. I think I've just about been taught to not show any more pics of my trips. Always someone there to level a blow. I must have read something wrong. This site is about hunting legal game with legal means isn't it? I am headed out for am evening pig hunt now. I will not show pics if I am successful. I will post them at Stickbow where I expect to take a beating! I have now been taught my lesson. See yall around! CK
ADMIN, HERE IS ANOTHER OF MY THREAD THAT NEEDS TO BE LOCKED DOWN. I seem to bring out controversy whatever I do. Lets not create anymore anomosity!
CK, I like to your posts, makes me want to go look you up or at least know where you hunt. :bigsmyl:
Curtis,
Send me an email of EVERY member that gave you grief over your legal hunt. This garbage has got to stop. Bowhunters shouldn't get beat up by other bowhunters for BOWHUNTING.
And also include a recipe for frog legs.

Hi Bill,
That's a fairly bold and conclusive statement, isn't it. As a frog hunter, and father of a budding frog hunter, I'd like to hear what information you have to arrive at said conclusion. Perhaps you can convince me that what I do is wrong. I really am open-minded. If you can't I'd appreciate it if you'd refrain from posting with such absolutism.
Thank you,
Stan
Side note to moderators - that's about as toned down as I could make that. I'm not trying to stir the pot, just an honest request for more info. However, if I don't get more info, I'd like to see the above post removed.
Curtis, Keep doing what you are doing...Admin will take care of this...Remember respect is what this site is about and I am sure it will be handled properly. Your hunts and the pictures that go along with them are some of us guys only link to sanity during a stressful week at work! thanks as always for sharing, pictures and all! Barry
I had the priveledge to chase frogs with Curtis while I was in Texas this summer. I never connected, but it wasn't from lack of trying.
And I love frog legs. Eat them every chance I get.
Northern folk get 300 lb. deer / Southern folk get 10 lb. frogs. Seems fair to me! Two frogs to the skillet. Wow!
P.S. Curtis, the blurred photo is called a haint in East TN!
Curtis, from the bottom of my heart, giving in to the jealous, bitter souls only encourages their pathetic behavior. I know your sand, and I say you might want to reevaluate your position: you are allowing a few of sad individuals to control you the way they want to....when there's thousands on here that look forward to you sharing your hunts.
You are truly one of the heros of our trad bowhunting community, maybe I don't tell you that enough...but I always look forward to your stories, your pics, and most of all your company while in the field. I know personally that your ethics are without question, that your spirit is one of giving and sharing to others, that you share an appreciation of all that God has given you, that you are truly blessed with skills that few others will ever hope to attain....I'm proud to call you my friend. Do what you must, but do so out of your own choice, not coersion from "fleas".....
well said JC.
Man that JC got a way with words!
Guys,
The don't kill frogs was a joke. Anyone who knows me knows that they are my favorite animals. I don't know why, they just are. I don't have a problem with people eating them or killing them I just wouldn't, er couldn't do it myself. Lord knows I've killed just about everything else worth shooting at.
That's cool, Bill. Just throw a :bigsmyl: or a :p or something at us. Hard to tell that the original was a joke. Sorry if I offended with my previous post, as I read yours as serious.
Stan
Whew.....glad I JUST NOW read this thread! My blood pressure went up on the previous page, but is back to normal now.
Stan.....I LOVE froglegs. I used to hunt them all the time when I was a kid. My mom has a picture of me when I was 8 sitting on my bike with 5 bull-frogs I had shot with my .22 hanging off the hanlebars. I 'harvested' them at my gradad's pond....hasn't been a frog on that pond in probably 15 years, or anywhere else around here where I used to hunt them. Don't know whats happened to our frog population here, but am happy to see them thriving in TX! I've even thought of trying to raise some to get the population going again.
Well, I didn't recognize Bill's handle at work and without a smiley at the end of the post, I hackled up a bit.
Now that I see it was Bill Curlis, I realize he was just funnin'.... dehackled.
Sorry for the added dash of whoop a$$. Things sure went down hill in a hurry.
I don't think Bill's post is what Curtis is referring to. I checked his profile afore I posted and figgered his was a friendly poke, everone here know's ol Bill Curlis is a friend of trad bowhunters. I think there are other, less honorable and genuine, miscreants at work here.
Thanks JC,
The world got a little off center there for a while.
Troy,I can't tell what wez suppose to be huntin there in that pic? Is it bare footed old men?(Not bashing the man in the pic now mind ya)! :D
I love frog legs! When I was a kid we lived in the country close to Marlow, OK. My favorite memory of frog hunting...Mr. Sands lived down the road from us and I caught him driving his tractor down the road. Asked permission to go hunt frogs on his place, he had two prime ponds. He had told me no before, but I suckered him into letting me and my brother hunt his ponds with just our sling shots (wrist-rockets with about an inch cut off the bands to make them shoot real hard and marbles for ammo). About two hours later ol man Sands catches us walking home with probably a dozen hawg frawgs each! Never got to hunt those ponds again. One of the frogs on that hunt had baby turtle in its mouth about the size of silver dollar.
I've also caught a butt load of'em using plastic worms while fishing. Toss your worm anywhere within about a foot of em and wiggle it a bit. They will jump on it every time. To set the hook you just about have to jerk them into the next county.
Of course, shooting 'em with trad bow gear is the proper and fitting way to hunt them.
Littlefether,
don't stop posting your shots of huge bowkilled porkers,( or any other critters)
after hours and hours in the woods without seeing a thing I like to check your threads, recharges me for the next day.
M
Curtis, living where I do,I don't have the opportunity to hunt the types of animals you do and really look forward to your stories and photo's.Thanks for posting them,I'd like to see you continue to do so...Jim.
Wow Dtala, can you burn me a copy of the "Revenge of the Nerds" lost bowhunting episodes? I've been hitting all flea markets and yard sales looking for an original!! :bigsmyl:
I couldn't resist, and this thread needed some humor! Forgive me- CKruse
littlefeather, an folk's wonder why I left penn. 24 years ago...KEEP THEM ARROWS FLYIN..
Are you guys sure those are bullfrogs?? They don't look anything like the ones we get up here.......bet they taste just as good though! Wonder if there are subspecies or if they just have significant regional variation in skin color and pattern.
BTW it was -12 when I got up today and we have been icefishing for a week.......so I guess I can't go get any frogs of my own.....
matt
Matt, I'll bet you can....you'll just need to dig reaaaaaaal deep :D
Matt, it's the water. :saywhat:
Haven't you heard, everything is bigger in ... :bigsmyl:
Yep, we hunt them frogs here in Mo. Remember being a boy down in the creek bottoms, just me the frogs, sqeeters, and snakes. :scared:
Gunny sacks full of frogs!.I used long poles back them. I remember them sacks jumping all over the place. Good eats :D
