Getting familiar with it,I ve probably only taken 5 shots with selfbows before I got this bow....

Had to go to the hardware store to get some stuff for my taxidermy shop.Picked up 4 5/16 dowels. Two were spined right at 50#,straightened with a screwdriver, stained, sealed, fletched without a jig and trimmed with scissors, and were arrows by the end of the afternoon.Shot good with WW on the business end.Time to go hunting......
These were just dowels at the hardware store this morning...
I decided to go "no camo" and take as little as possible..."A la Ferret".....
More pix to come of the hunt....
Glad you got it and were able to make you some arrows!! I did the same thing with some 5/16 ramin dowels. They actually shot pretty good!
Good luck with the bow!
Danny
And I anxiously await the next installment....Nice looking bow Stan, and those arrows look pretty good too...
David
Stan made a real nice bow..good luck Curt
Dang Curt, that things to pretty to hunt with>
Oh we can't wait for the conclusion...Sure wish I had some of them real turkey feathers laying around. For some reason in my mind Jason's signature pink fletching just don't seem to go with that selfbow or the self nocks we had planned. Then again he's the one who will be shootin Stan's bow and his brain is programmed for the pink feathers. Maybe it will be a deadly combination... Now Curt blood that thing and take the pressure off my boy.
Beautiful bow and the arrows too. If anybody could blood that bow Curt can do it. So I wonder if it's off to the apple orchard?
I'm sure gonna try...as you can see I got a bit nostalgic today.I'll hunt the rest of the week this way.Plaids and solids,I have a bin full of plaid cloths I save for hunts like this(I only hunted in plaid for years).
I'm the 3rd guy to get the bow,"Yleecoyote23" and "Razorbak" had it before me.
This bow is very, very different than I'm used to shooting. So,It's real tough getting used to it.But I did shoot it pretty well out to 20yds yesterday. The biggest thing with me is I shoot with a straight wrist, very loose. This bow feels like it's going to jump out of my hand at release everytime, the grip is very small.I've actually dropped bows before at release. One someone elses longbow on the concrete floor of Joe Skipps shop!!
I also always shoot my curve with a full bowquiver,so all that weight is missing too.
I should be back out tomorrow somewhere..here's more pix....
I didn't see a thing.I was hunting behind the house,few deer,but it was worth a shot.Hopefullt tomorrow I will go to a spot I know that's loaded with deer!!
good luck Curt, sweet lookin' bow, good pics. BD
That sure is a purdy bow.
Curt...doing it in style
That is a purty bow.
Wow don't ya just feel FREE hunting like that Curt :D unencumbered, light, agile, stealthy
You may or may not kill anything but either way you'll look good doing it ;)
Get em close and HAMMMER EM!
Next step... stone and cane! LOL We'll make a proper primitive archer outta you yet.
JC's next on the list for conversion! ha
Mickey, Yes it felt very good not to be weighed down with stuff.I wish I had a stone, cane combo to hunt with this week.
If one comes close,I'm con
fident it'll get "hammered"!!!!
Thanks Mick
I can definately see an addiction out of this....
Good luck Curt. I will be watching this thread as your hunt progresses :)
Kevin.
COOL BEANS!! I hope ya whack something with it!! Shawn
my first season with a selfbow( last year) whacked a nice big doe. you will get one I'm sure. BD
Looking forward for the pictures.
Nice looking bow also!!!
David
Hey Curt, you are killing something, time, in the best of ways. Good luck man. Seeing that bow in the pics sure puts a smile in my heart.
Stan
You're right Stan...I'm really having a ball with this bow! Thank You
I also got your e mail,I'll get that right out to ya...
Did ya hunt? or ya going this afternoon? Shawn
Well, the hunt with my bud fell thru.
So I headed out to one of my favorite spot here close to home. It's right by a hole in a fence that the deer use to get across a road.....
My shot should come from here...
But it was a balmy 70 degrees when I hit the woods at about 3:30.And the moon is about full,so I wasn't expecting much. But I still had some hope because I had some white oaks that were dropping around me.
This is the arrow that's "bound for glory"...As mentioned earlier, made by Jsog last year...
On the pointy end is a broadhead from my first bunch I bought when I started shooting trad back in '86.You can see they're altered Zwickey deltas.Blades were ground off to make them easier to sharpen for me back in the day.Only 3 that I know exist from this batch. One is in a broadhead frame made by "Littlefeather" for St. Judes. That broadhead killed my first trad buck,a 7pt back in '87.Now owned by Jsog.#2 is in my curio downstairs,it was used to kill a 4x4 bull elk in Colorado in '87.And this one.......
Well...didn't see a thing Had a good wind, just wasn't anything really moving much I guess.Did take a shot at a light colored leaf (the one by the grip)before I got down...........bingo!
Get em Boy!!!
Dang deer, the least one of them could have done was cooperate for the sake of the thread :D
Curt, What a coincidence!!! I had a dozen cedar arrows with 4 blade Zwickey broadheads on them given to me back in 1977. I couldn't get them sharp to save my life SO... I ground off the bleeder blades and TaDa!!!!!!! Razor Sharp 2 blades!!! Good Luck on your Journey My Brother!!! May the Great Spirit guide your arrows!!!
Happy Hunting!!! Chuck
Just a matter of time Curt. Got my fingers crossed bud. Thanks for letting us go along.
Stan
Stan, I have limited hunting time, but I'm really tryin'.I'm gonna hunt with it thru the weekend and send it along......
Believe it or not...I miss my curve!!!! Plus I don't want to shoot anything else but my K.S.,Iowa is getting close!!!!!
I'll have more pix soon..........
Curt, go out during mid day if ya get the chance. remeber Cindy said that is when they are moving. Man she is right. I saw 15 deer today between 11 and 1:30 today. It is the moon my brother from another mother!! Shawn

Way to go curt let hear the story bud.
YEA BABY! :notworthy:
Ok...The afternoon started out helping a old friend hang a stand. He's getting a bit"long in the tooth" so I told him if he needed help, call me.He did,so we hung the stand.I was next to one of my old haunts.A spot that Cade and I had cleared about a month ago....
When I parked, got my gear together, realized I had forgotten my plaid flannel shirt, and plaid wool vest...DANG!!!! My only options were to either not hunt(I was only wearing a short sleved t-shirt),or wear my scent blocker shirt that I had sealed up in the back.It would buy me enough time,as the temps dropped to get a hunt in.
Got to my tree Cade and I had cleared, climbed up,
time went by,didn't see anything but squirrels. It was one of the quietest and crunchiest days in the woods I've had in a while.I could hear squirrels 100yds away.
At about 5:50 I was startled by a vibration in my pocket!!! Dang..just the cell phone. My wife checking to see when I'd be home.Told her I was getting cold cause I had forgotten some cloths, and I wasn't seeing or hearing anything anyway.Let her know I'd give it a few more minutes, then head out.
It wasn't five minutes later I heard the unmistaking sound of a deer walking...and toward me! Stood up...flipped my LW seat up...got the arrow out of it's pouch..nocked it..and got ready as the deer got closer. At about 60yds I finally saw it,my Leicas told me it was a buck!!
As he closed I knew he coming just as I knew the deer would at this spot. The trail was close, that's why I was at this spot.As he closed I set my feet, and he continued on the trail. He was broadside at about 5 yds............I just kept thinking...."let him go by a little and quarter away......
:bigsmyl:
Jeeeeez! You're killin' me, not no deer!
:smileystooges: :D Hope I can stay up to hear and see the pics, have to be at work by 5am
That is really cool and a great idea Stan had. I've seen Mr.Clean and he's a nice bow!!
Congrats Curt!
....As he got to the very end of my shooting window....It was time....I don't remember drawing, hitting anchor or anything.I never do at a time like this...next thing I know there 's nothing but the yellow feathers sticking out the top of his nearside ribs!!!
I knew I had him.............
He crashed off for about 15yds..stopped...looked around....started to stumble......and fell over!!
He went a total of about 20yds,and was dead in seconds....I looked at my phone,it was 6:00!!
You wanna talk about shakin'...between being cold(from my lack of clothing) and being so excited about what I had just accomplished..I was a mess!!
Here's the shot...
It's hard to see,but if you look close you can see the white of his ear and the glint of his eye from the flash, between the trees.Taken from the stand.....
I couldn't get down quick enough,I lowered Stans bow,and threw everything else down! I walked to where he stood,6yds.....First blood....
Five yards ahead lay the business end of the arrow...Painted red....
Kill'n me.
Come on!! I just got home this!!! Shawn
WAY TO GO CURT!!!!!!
I knew it :readit:
:bigsmyl: :help:
oh come on!!!!
If you could add a little about the bow, I haven't heard about this bow and its travels.
Way to go, man!!! for a new yorker your not all bad :bigsmyl: :notworthy:
Where he stopped....
and started to stumble.....
As I found him,My..."I couldn't be happier if he was a booner" .... spike!!!
Where the arrow came out.....
I rolled him over..where the arrow took him.....
More pix to come.....
SWEET!!! I knew that bow would have blood on it before it was all said and done!!!
Nice Shootin Curt!! Nice Buck!! :notworthy:
God Bless!
Jim
I feel warm and fuzzy allover. :)
Great for you. And thank you
Stan
I love the color of red in the fall! Great job Curt, how cool is that? It was just a matter of time man, just a matter of time.
Congrats, and  to Cade for his part in this kill.
Take care,
David
Curt,Thats great I Know how you feel to take it with that bow and arrow. This year I wanted to take one with my longbow and a cedar arrow that I made.I know you have taken some nice bucks but I bet you'll remember this one.Good luck on your up coming hunt....ED
Dang GURU, with that shot he didn't have a chance. Way to put the hammer down.
NICE!!!!!
Look at the smile, this really means a lot to me...
A special bow,arrow,and buck....
I got done with pix(selftimers) and it was time for dressing.I had a special tool for this too.A knife made by "LAR43" ,and given to me by him back in late winter.I christened it skinning my turkeys this spring.......
Now she's broke in!!
Incredible!! That is cool!! Great pics. and great story!! Shawn
Way to go Curt!!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATS! You did well Curt
It's a great feeling to take on new challenges and accomplish them.
Thank you to everyone...this feeling never gets old!!!!
As you can see,I was hunting with quite a few fellow TGer's.Another one was a thought from Mickey"The ferret" Lotz in an earlier post...
"get um close and hammer um"!!! I've been thinking that since I read it!!!
Thanks Mick
Larry..I love that knife!! Thank you sir   :notworthy:
My only regret...I forgot my plaid!! :(
CONGRATS to both of you, Curt and Stan, you both did good!!

David
Congrats Curt!!!! Glad it all came together for you. Great story and pics.
Cool story on so many levels!!
Enjoyed following this ...I'm happy for you.
Job well done...I'm superstitious...I hate to break it to you but changin' shirts changed your luck.
:bigsmyl:
Great Job And super pix's
I go to town for a day and look what happens. :wavey:
Jim Coffey
Congrats on a GREAT hunt and deer!! It's the size of the hunt and not the deer that is important. Thank you for sharing it with us!!   :notworthy:
Still miss that curve?
yeah Curt, still miss that 'curve??? I think a bit of the WOODBOWBUG is in ya now...Great job, and how cool is this, last year I shot a big doe with my selfbow...was not dressed enufff, left my wool shirt at home. Was Nov. 1st. Was shaking almost uncontrollably , about to get out of my stand when her and 4 of her lady friends stepped out.
Took the shot, heart shot, ran about 30 yards...pretty similar circumstances. And so far I'm still the only guy to kill a deer with a Mike Procter( aka maple mike) selfbow!
Very close knit stories eh? again Curt SUPER job.
Big Dog.
Wow, I couldn't wait to get up and check this.I just went back and read it start to finish. What a week.I saw a grand total of 1 deer while hunting with Mr. Clean.....he sure is gonna eat good :bigsmyl:
McRae,You may be right bud...
"an eleven pointer"..yessir Johnboy,yessir!
Canyon, Joe Weed "Osagetree" gets it next, then Ted Kinney "Ted",then you and Jason, there's a note to get it to you by the last week in Dec.
Charlie,Maybe not as much now ;)
At the beginning of the week I decided I would shoot any deer with this bow.Limited hunting time, and I knew it would be special regardless of size.
This is the smallest buck I've shot in quite a while, but I couldn't be happier, prouder! The sense of accomplishment is almost overwelming!!
I know you selfbow guy do this all the time, probably no big deal to ya.But for me it was something very different, most rewarding!
First time I've ever killed anything with an arrow someone besides myself made, and first kill with a bow that wasn't custom made for me with my name on it.As most know I'm a "one bow guy" and my best friend since '97 has been my Kwyk Styk(Ol' Reliable),to be honest it was tough to put her aside for this time, but it was well worth it.
I've opened up a whole new world!!!!!
Dog, We were writing at the same time...Thanks Bud
Thats exactly what I was wonderin Charlie. What about missin that curve? I know how it makes a guy feel ta do it with a selfbow. Waaaayyyy special! Especially when ya throw all that other MOJO in on top of it. Impressive! Couldn't have happened to a better man. Glad it worked out the way it did. Congrats! CK
Great going Curt! Thanks for sharing your hunt with us.
Dang bro you ain't supposed to get blood on the HANDLE of the knife, that's what the blade is for ha ha. Neat knife!
Judging from the angle of entry of that arrow, you might have let him get in a bit TOO close before you hammered him LOL
He's just a miniature version of the one in your avatar.Like Dianne said one time after shooting a similar buck " He's a P&Y er, I could see the potential right off, so I figured why wait?"
You have now joined the "brotherhood of the wood bow". Next time you pick up your glass bow it's gonna seem like a contraption
!["" "[tunglaff]"]("graemlins/tunglaff.gif")
(just kiddin)
Congrats again Curt, love seeing that smile!
Congrats on the 11 pt Curt!
People around here are always asking me about the bows I make, and if they will kill deer? They don't seem to think a simple thing like a selfbow will do the job.
Be very careful now....or you'll get hooked!
Stone point next? :D
Ck, Thanks Bro
Razz,Thanks you sir
Mick, Yea he may have gotten a bit too close.I did still get both lungs,in the top of the near lung, and thru the center of the far lung somehow cutting about a 5" slice on the way out of that lung.Thank You Mickey!!
Timo,If I get another chance with this bow next time around,I'll be better prepared.I would love to try a stone point. This whole week I was thinking about it!! Thanks!!
Great story Curt, couldn't be more happy for ya! Thanks for the pics and taking us along on your adventure. All I can say is don't let one of these lunatics talk you into scraping on no piece of wood or it will be allllllll over!
Awesome Curt. Great story and pics. Thanks for sharing....Mac~
CONGRATS!!!!
Awsome story and pics!!!!!

Awesome!!
Way to go Curt. Excellent job. Thanks for taking us along for the ride with all of your pics. Congrats.
Hopefully, this is the first in a long line of successful adventures with Mr. Clean, the left-handed story bow.
Ted
Nice job Curt!
Curt this is real, real cool! Love all the pics, next best thing to being there. I like seeing the red stuff all over. That knife looks about right to me good and red. :D
I have build, maybe 6 or 8 wooden bows of different kinds and never really felt confident to take one to the woods. But it is high on my list, it is hard to put the curvey down and commit.
Anyway, could not be happer for you :D , and using the bow, arrow, knife, and who knows what else from you friends here just makes it the very best!
And oh yeah, 5 yard shot couldn't be any sweeter! Love those close shots!
Thanks again.
Way To Go! Curt! Congratulations! Great Story! Nice Deer!
Congrats!!! No where else but here can you read about or be a part of a story such as this. I got goosebumps!!!
Nice job Curt, Great Story!!!
Thanks for sharing! The story was great, but the fellowship you read behind the story makes it that much better!
Congrats to you and the others who have and will tote the bow!!!
Congratulations, a great story and a finer trad harvest.
Jerry
Curt, Congratulations on your successful journey my Brother!!! The Great Spirit is Proud!!!
Thanks for shareing your story with us!!!!!!!
Happy Hunting!!! Chuck
WOW! Another great thread and success story!
And just to think, ya did it all left handed too. :D I can appreciate that even more being a lefty shooter myself.
Wonderful job of taking great pic's to go along with the story. Congratulations in more ways than one. Really tickled for you and Stan.
From the bottom of my heart...thank you all very much :notworthy:
JC, don't worry bud,I'm not givin' up on my KS yet!!! But a fire has been kindled!!!
Al33,Get a hold of Stan and get yourself on the list for the bow.He talked about keeping it going for a while...........
Awesome stuff.. Thanks for sharing. You did a great job with the pics and the story tellin. Mighty fine looking litle one you got too. You are a blessed man, no doubt!!
Nice job Curt. Loved the story and pics.
Now ya know them wood bows do work. :)
Nice. Good shot. He sure bled a lot and quick!
Dude... you are the man!!! I would have to rank this as one of the top threads to be following here in a while
Congrats on one awesome trophy! This could not have been scripted any better :)
Way to go!
Kevin.
Awesome, Curt  !!!
congrats curt.nice friction folder too! sure is fun aint it???
What a great story. The best I've ever read on a net forum. Congrats to everyone involved!
Bill
Hey Curt, that one pic with the bow, buck and arrow would make one nice mag cover. Great photos. I want on to put on my wall. I'm still on cloud nine.
Stan
So that makes three bucks, two javalina, and a couple hundred fish for that bow. It's drawn blood in Old Mexico, Alabama and New York.
Stan
Nice Curt...good stuff, man!
Hopefully some good NY luck will spill toward Me, Scott and Mark for tomorrow...they've already agreed to meet me at my stand at 7ish to help drag my buck...such nice guys ;)
Way to go buddy! Awesome mission accomplished!
:saywhat:
(Sorry Ron L....)

Way to go Curt!
Ron, You're nuts dude!!!! But thanks
Thanks guys...still floatin'
Mr. Clean is on his way to "osagetree" in Ohio.I signed it with a silver sharpie...
It was tough packing it up.It felt like I had just shared a great hunting camp and hit it off with someone, made a great friend, and in the short time we had together really bonded. Then when it's time to say goodby ya kinda get that lumpy feeling in your throat,ya know what I mean??
I just feel so priveledged to have had the chance to hunt with Stans bow,and to actually get the chance to kill something with it is an honor!
Like I said earlier...it couldn't have worked out any better!!!
Stan,I'll e mail all the pics for you to print out
Brian, good luck to you guys tomorrow, stay dry!!
Yep, that string looks fried. Someone said your making strings Curt, why don't you keep it a day or so and send a string with it. Does'nt have to be ff. Then there'll be a string from you to add to the mojo. Just a thought.
Stan
Dang Stan..It's gone already. How long does the string have to be??? I can send one to Joe ....I have bright green TS-1.....
Well, I can't remember how long it is.
:knothead:
Stan
Make it 2" shorter than the NTN length. It's easier to twist them shorter than it is to twist them longer :D
Maybe we can have Joe measure it??? It's en route right now.....
Great job Curt....man you really put the hurt on the critters!
Thanks Dick...it sure feels good when it all finally comes together
I'm way late but thats a great story all-the-way-around. Put a nice smile on my face. See. :bigsmyl: Congrats Curt. And everyone else involved in this hunt. I just love it when a group of Tradgangers "do it together". :D
Outstanding..... Nothing more I can say of the entire process that would enhance the success. Congrats, my friend.
TL
Congrats! Great story.....
Great story Curt. That bows MOJO is building up !!
Randy,Thomas,Bishs,Bob...Thank you
Man I found this one real late. Congrats Bro
Between hunting and working I haven't been here much lately.Just found this thread and read it from beginning to end.Awesome Curt and congrats on your success. How long before you start building bows?Again,congratulations...Jim.
I go out of town for a few days and look what happens! :)
Congrats Bro! That's a memeorable buck and a well told story. Thanks for taking us all along for the hunt! :D
If Mr. Clean still needs a new string when it makes it's way to Maryland, I will be sure to have a few waiting for it.
Ted
Curt, way to go man. That was flat out smokin his hind end with THAT shot.
Way to go Curt!! That was a long story but I like how ya drag em out LOL I,m not that good a story teller myself besides not haveing pics less somebody does it for me LOL
Congrads and thanks for sharing
what an awesome hunt!
nicely done.
WOW! :knothead:
I had forgotten about this bow pact I had made. Thanks Stan and all the others that make this possible, felt like X-Mas! :)
Sounds great to me, Osage. My birthday is November 7, so it is the perfect time to start looking for a bow in the mail. Good luck with it . . . keep Guru's mojo working.
Ted
Joe, Glad you got Mr. Clean safe and sound,it's a relief to know it's there. The string looks shot, but since it's FF,I'd bet the bow would probably give in before the string does, but better safe than sorry. If you want,I can make and send one out of TS-1.Just let me know how long to make it.
I have no doubt you'll keep the mojo going with one of those great Ohio bucks. You're a lot more used to shooting a bow like this than me,since you shoot selfbows anyway. So you'll get used to it in no time.Good Luck man!!
Oh yeah, thanks again to everyone...now it's Joes turn...........
I finally got around to reading this one.......thanks for sharing your experiences with the Gang.
That's what we're here for.
Way to go Curt! Good luck Joseph and Ted. Looking forward to hearing the continuing story as it develops. Thanks to Stan for making it possible for these hunts to happen!
Good going, Stan. With a fine bow like that, how could he miss?
very cool story and congradulashuns curt!
ttt for osage tree.
